[JAWS-Users] jaws 9 demo not displaying links on a page

2008-05-09 Thread ryan Perdue
Hi, I'm looking at a grocery store shopping site at products.
I notice that in jfw 7 and 8, I see links for products.
With jaws 9, I do not.
Some of these links just say numbers and then they have the product title under
them but, they are clickable links none the less.
I still have jfw set to defaults and I'm thinking it's just a setting I need to
fix.

Hi, I can't see the products either, but then again I'm not familiar

2008-05-09 Thread David Griffith
You could try merging your settings from 8 into 9 and see if that fixes the
problem.
If it does not it is probably a Jaws 9 issue and you probably need to
contact FS.

[JAWS-Users] Jaws 9.0.2152 and Word-XP acting very strangely.

2008-05-09 Thread Liz and Sammie
Good morning. I updated to Jaws 9.0.2152, and all is working fine, except
for one thing which is driving me somewhat nuts. When I type a word
document it starts out at Document 1. I'm typing medical reports so once I
finish a document I have to open up my already made log templet to document
my report which is a Word document, but should not count as document 2.
When I open up a new word document to type a new report, instead of it being
document 2, it is document 3, then 5, then 7, ETC. I did not have this
problem until I updated to the most recent build of Jaws. I hope my
explanation of what is happening makes sense, and I am wondering if anyone
else has encountered this problem. If so, is there a way to fix it, or
should I just deal with it. It's not worth it to me to uninstall the update
and go back to 9.0, because if this is a bug, it needs to be corrected. Any
help will be appreciated.

5. use CTRL-Tab to move to the advanced page of the dialog.
6. Use tab key to move to the start up menu items tree view and then
press F until you hear the favorites choice.
7. use the spacebar to check the choice.
8. use tab to move to OK and press enter.
9. Use tab key to find an apply button and if there is one then press
spacebar on it.
10. Use apply or OK buttons until you are back to the control panel and

Re: [JAWS-Users] A question about AVG

2008-05-09 Thread Job Hunter
Hi Stu,
From what I have read, you are correct. May 31 will be the last update for
AVG 7.5.
From all the buzz on the lists, it sounds like Avast is the next best choice
for those of us using a screen reader and that is the way I am going to
proceed. Of course, I'll wait to the last possible minute to make the
switch, just so I can have something else to complain about.

I've been using AVG for about 7 years, so this is going to be a big change
for me. But then, change can be good too!

   Hi Vijay,
First I want to welcome you to the list.
I believe this is what I would do to open the drives. Someone else may
be knowledgeable than I am. First go to my computer and when the dialog
   box
opens asking you which program to use to open the drive, select internet
explorer. This program as I understand it is usually the default program
   for
navigating a windows based system. I hope this helps.

   God bless,

 Hi Stu,
From what I have read, you are correct. May 31 will be the last update
for
 AVG 7.5.
From all the buzz on the lists, it sounds like Avast is the next best
choice
for those of us using a screen reader and that is the way I am going to
proceed. Of course, I'll wait to the last possible minute to make the
switch, just so I can have something else to complain about.

I've been using AVG for about 7 years, so this is going to be a big
 change
for me. But then, change can be good too!

Hello and welcome to the list.
As I understand it, your problem is not about the
drive opening, but about
choosing a program to open one specific file. That's
why you get the list of
programs available on your computer, so that you can
select how to open your
file.

[JAWS-Users] Making Avast More Accessible

2008-05-09 Thread Chris Hallsworth
Hi all, please accept my apologies for the duplicate posts, however I feel
that the more people that get the below instructions, the better. So here we
go.

Hi all, do the following two things to make Avast more accessible.
Configuring Avast to not use the skins for the simple user interface:
1. Start Avast.
2. Wait for the memory test to be completed, then close the web page that

Let me know how you make out.

Wow, David! Congratulations! Once again, I commend you for all your
 good
 work on our behalf!

This list is the first place I come to when I have any question about
 JAWS.
and, wonder of wonders, I usually get a good answer.

So, thanks to you and rick and those who work with you to keep all of us
 functioning better with our computers!

If anybody is interested we've now grown back up to 355 members, which is
the highest count since the last and hopefully final move this list

Re: [JAWS-Users] Making Avast More Accessible

2008-05-09 Thread Chris Hallsworth
Hi all, don't worry about it being private or not, but yes shift F10 will
also work. The reason I stated the applications key is that this key is
pretty much standard on most modern keyboards, but let me stress that shift
F10 *will* work to bring up the skin's context menu. Hope that helps.

 Dear Rob

As you know I found your Avast anti virus inaccessible so I could not
 check
it. I saw the below email which seems to be instructions on how to make
 Avasst accessible for Jaws.

May be worth a try. You might need Annette's help. Remember if you your
laptop does not have an application key the pressing shift F10 normally
 gets
 the same result..

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Making Avast More Accessible

Hi all, please accept my apologies for the duplicate posts, however I feel
that the more people that get the below instructions, the better. So here
 we
 go.

Hi all, do the following two things to make Avast more accessible.
Configuring Avast to not use the skins for the simple user interface:
 1. Start Avast.
 2. Wait for the memory test to be completed, then close the web page that
appears. You should now land on a dummy check box.
 3. Press the applications key to open a context menu, down arrow to
 settings
and press enter. The Programme Settings dialogue box appears, with the
 categories tree gaining focus.
 4. Tab until you hear, enable skins for simple user interface check box
checked. Press space to uncheck it.
 5. Tab to ok and press enter. You'll land back on the dummy check box.
 6. Close and restart Avast. You should now be able to tab through the
 controls in this programme.
Configuring JAWS to read lists in Avast:
 1. Make sure that you're focused on the Avast Simple User Interface.
 2. Press JAWS key 6 to open Configuration Manager.
 3. Press enter to accept the New Configuration File dialogue box.
 4. Press alt s to open the set options menu, then press a. The advanced
 Options dialogue box appears.
 5. Shift tab till you hear, Rely on MSAA for List Views check box not
checked. Press space to check it.
 6. Press enter to activate the ok button.
 7. Either press control s to save your configuration file immediately, or
press alt F4, pressing enter to activate the yes button on the confirm
 dialogue box.
By doing these steps, you'll resolve an issue on some machines whereby
 JAWS
stops speaking when focused on any of the lists in Avast.

[JAWS-Users] Replacement for AVG

2008-05-09 Thread Alan Terrie Robbins
I would be interested in opinions from the group as to a rank ordering from
most to least of anti virus programs that are JAWS friendly that have been
tried. Since many of us will need to abandon AVG by the end of the month
this information may be helpful in selecting a replacement. I for one have
not tried any other paid or free program since going from Norton to AVG a
couple of years ago. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Replacement for AVG

2008-05-09 Thread Chris Hallsworth
Hi Sharon and All, from what I've read AVG will stop updating automatically
from 31 May and you'll be encouraged to upgrade to the inoperable version 8
if you want to continue receiving updates. I say inoperable as if you try to
load AVG 8 with JAWS you're asked to send an error report. AVG are aware of
this and are hoping to fix it but who knows when. Hope that helps.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Power Braille 80 working with Jaws

2008-05-09 Thread Flor Lynch
What do you call those cards that allow you install extra (or re-allocate
existing) com ports,
expansion slots - serial or other. (An ISA slot?) I'm not sure of the
name.) Maybe you could add one in the back of the computer, (or get someone
to do it, etc.) There would be a CD with the software, and then one
physically would add in the serial port and whatever. Another thought,
probably better: You could try an USB-to-serial converter. This appears to
be a simpler solution, and it could work.

Do you have a serial cable you could use? It might be easier going that
way - into, say, one of the ordinary com ports. (I'm not using Vista, btw.)

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Power Braille 80 working with Jaws

Hello there,

I am wondering if someone can help me out here. I have a Power Braille 80
and I want to get it working with Jaws.

I am using Windows Vista Home Edition Premium.

Here are the steps I have followed:

1. I connected the PB 80 to the power supply and charged the battery.

2. I have a parallel cable going in to the only parallel port I have which
is a printer port and it is considered lpt1.

3. I then go to the Synth and Braille Manager and tell it I want to use the
PB 80 on LPT1 And check the Pb80 display check box with in the Synth and
Braille Manager.

4. I then say finish to the Synth and Braille Manager and start Jaws as
asked by Jaw's executable.

5. I restart Jaws and then Jaws is complicated by a Windows error which
says that the application meaning Jaws will not run.

I have two questions here. Does the Pb 80 need bidirectional support? I am
assuming yes since it needs to talk both ways? Secondly, are there any
other settings that any one can suggest?

Have a wonderful day.

Hello,
I guess I haven't been following this thread as closely as I should have.
Right now I'm using AVG free 7.5. Will I half to stop using that at the end

I would be interested in opinions from the group as to a rank ordering from
most to least of anti virus programs that are JAWS friendly that have been

this information may be helpful in selecting a replacement. I for one
 have
not tried any other paid or free program since going from Norton to AVG a
couple of years ago. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Lisa,
On May 31 grisoft is going to stop supporting AVG 7.5. That means
you will have to either find another anti virus program since the new
version of AVG isn't working well with Jfw. A good free alternative is avast.

Corey, you have to go to their site and email them and ask for a license
key. They are very good in sending it and telling you what to do.
 There's
no graphical box, but they do give you a 60 day trial.

Let me know how you make out.

Hello vijay, I welcome you on the list, and can say it surely that you
shall learn alot almost everything related to JAWS, and accessibility,
and sometimes some good stuff too!
back to your drives,
well, as you have said that you formatted the drive c once,
are you able to open it now?
ok, what ever the case may be, I suggest you to find some good
antirootkit, and use antivirus software panda! to remove the virus,
I had this problem earlier, caused by a virus called: Ravmon the file
name was, ravmon.exe, and 2 other files on the root of the drives,
ravmon.log, and autorun.inf containing the info to launch the ravmon.exe,
I formatted the system, and the problem remained same. then I booted the
system up by linux Live cd, find the file with the name above, and
deleted it.
but don't worry, I hope you don't have to do that hell!
HTH, thankyou all!

[JAWS-Users] moving my settings to new computer

2008-05-09 Thread Dixie
I have been unsuccessfully attempting to move my settings from my old XP
computer running Jaws 9 to my new Vista computer .

I have Jaws installed on the new computer and authorized. I am attempting
to save my settings, such as exceptions dictionary and move them by jump
drive to the new computer.

From what I understand I am to copy the enu file and paste it into the new
computer. I thought I had done this successfully but there were no changes
made to my settings.

So, could one of you very wise folks please tell me the steps to accomplish
this task? Thank you!

Re: [JAWS-Users] moving my settings to new computer

2008-05-09 Thread Denny Huff
To copy your Jaws settings from one PC to another, do the following.

1. Open start menu.
2. Open Programs

Subject: [JAWS-Users] moving my settings to new computer

I have been unsuccessfully attempting to move my settings from my old XP
computer running Jaws 9 to my new Vista computer .

I have Jaws installed on the new computer and authorized. I am attempting
to save my settings, such as exceptions dictionary and move them by jump
drive to the new computer.

From what I understand I am to copy the enu file and paste it into the
new
computer. I thought I had done this successfully but there were no changes
made to my settings.

So, could one of you very wise folks please tell me the steps to accomplish
this task? Thank you!

Dixie

Hello and welcome to the list.
As I understand it, your problem is not about the
 drive opening, but about
choosing a program to open one specific file. That's
why you get the list of
programs available on your computer, so that you can
 select how to open your
 file.
