[JAWS-Users] files appearing empty in my documents but read fine when accessed through word

2008-06-29 Thread jason smith
Hi list,
I have had a strange problem the past few days. I have some files containing my
study assignments for uni. Since I wanted to have 2 or 3 documents opened at
the same time, I opened them through my documents. This meant I could just
shift tab back to the list of files, and arrow down to the next I wanted,
rather than going through the open dialogue in word. However, when I open the
files, Jaws reads as if the documents are empty. However, if I launch word from
the start menu, control O and shift tab into the list of files, and open them
there, Jaws reads the contents fine. I haven't been able to get anyone to
confirm for me, if the text actually appears when I open them through my
documents though. If the text isn't appearing, then Jaws will in fact be
reporting things correctly. Does anyone know though, why the same files would
read differently when opened through my documents?
thanks Jason
P.S I am using Jaws 9 pro, word 2003 and XP home.

Hi Donnie,
What you have is a powerpoint slide presentation.
You can find a viewer for that particular file type on the
blind-computing.com site.
David may also have it on the jaws-users programs page.

I have never heard of a pts file type. Are you sure this is not PDF ?
To check in Outlook 2003
Press Insert A again. This time press the minus key on the num pad to turn
on the Jaws cursor. Now press num pad 5 twice to turn phonetic spelling on.
Now slowly right cursor along the file name to find out for definite what
the file type is. If it is pts it will say Papa tango sierra .
If it is PDF it will say Papa, Delta, Foxtrot.

A check on Google reveals that there are some pts files out there but they
are pretty obscure so it is worth checking first.

The problem here is that your PC is not recognising the attached file type.
As the message you are receiving does not include the file type , we cannot
at the moment tell you what specifically the program is that you should be
associating with this attachment.

In the message you pasted the address path is so long that it is expiring
in , preventing us from seeing the file name and extension.

We need to know what the file extension of the attached file is that is
causing this message. Go back to the email where you have a problem. Press
Insert A and tell us what the file name and extension is. Once we know what
program to associate with this file we can advise on the many ways that you
can associate this file with a program to open it.

One thing to eliminate is that sometimes a file with a .dat extension is
attached to emails. If you are trying to open one of these you can safely
ignore these as they are system files. If you really want to read these you
can associate notepad to open them. Still investigate what the file is
first.

David Griffith

Sometimes I get emails with attachments that I cannot open. When I try to
open them, here is the message that I get.

Microsoft Outlook Dialogue. The file C\Documents and Settings\Donnie
Parrett\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files...does not have a program
associated with it for this action. To create an association double click
my computer on your desktop. On the view menu click options and then click

What can I do to be able to open these types of attachments?

Thanks,

Re: [JAWS-Users] files appearing empty in my documents but read finewhen accessed through word

2008-06-29 Thread David Griffith
Sounds like it might be a focus issue.

You could try the following on the files which will not read once opened in
Word.
Press Insert and num pad minus key.

You will hear jaws say route Jaws to PC.
Press the cursor keys up and down and see if you are hearing anything of
your document.
If so press the num lock / key once to give a mouse click in the text.

Press the num pad plus key to return Jaws to normal cursor.

This might work but as I have not encountered this problem I cannot
guarantee anything.

Let us know.

I'm having some problems with internet explorer downloading from websites,

[JAWS-Users] Question about an adobie update.

2008-06-29 Thread cutolo.albert
Hello everyone,

On Friday morning, when I booted up my computer, there was a message from
the adobie site which asked me if I wanted to update my adobie player. My
question is that I don't know the particular number of the file or player
that was updated when I accepted the change. Is there any way that I can
find out this information? I looked in the program menu, as well as the
start menu and couldn't find anything that would tell me that information.

Hi:

My version shows on the desktop icon. With Adobe products though, you don't
have to do anything but authorize the update. The system knows what you need to
update too. On Sun, 29 Jun 2008 16:35:27 -0400, you wrote:

You might try while in your documents, open a folder and press alt V, see
what is checked. I keep mine checked on list view...

Re: [JAWS-Users] Avast

2008-06-29 Thread Jewel
Hi Christy! I can't understand what your problem can be when you say that the
avast installer is
not, really, friendly!
I am something of a computer clutz and even to me, installation was a breeze!
If it is the registration key that is bothering you: just email to [EMAIL
PROTECTED] telling them
that you are blind, where you live and that you would appreciate some help with
the registration
key.
Within a day or two, someone will contact you from avast giving you your key
which you then enter in
the registration box of avast. From memory, I think that box is under "about"
in the avast contents
menu.
You have 60 days evaluation so with or without registration, avast will keep
your computer virus
free for that time.

[JAWS-Users] napster

2008-06-29 Thread Candy Lowe
Hello list,

Does any one download music from napster and how does it work with jaws? I use
free.nester.com and it works fine with jaws, but I have not joined napster and
paid the fee as of yet. I just wonder if it is accessible with jaws.

My husband is sighted and uses limewire, but that does not work with jaws.
Thanks for any help.
