[JAWS-Users] Copying Text.

2008-09-12 Thread Mandy
I've just joined this Group and did send this email three days ago but it
hasn't even appeared yet perhaps this is due to moderated status on joining so
apologies if it eventually turns up twice!
A couple of weeks back I was altering some Jaws settings via configuration
Manager so went to user settings and looked in HTML as I thought what I needed
to change was there.

A change I did not intend to make and do not want is that: when selecting
text, Jaws repeats it which is very confusing how do I alter this?

I am using Jaws 10 beater but it happens on previous versions too.

You can toggle screen echo setting off highlighted by pressing Insert S
until you hear Jaws say none. The options are all, none and highlighted.

I am interested in why this is confusing for you though. How else will you
know which text you have selected if Jaws does not tell you? What method do
you use. Jaws will normally read out the text you select and say selected at
the end. If you want to stop the reading just press the control key once.

Hi Allen,
Welcome to the list.
You should visit the Freedom Scientific website,
there you can find basic pricing for Jaws.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Jaws for Mac, in the UK

 Hello.

From what I have been told, Jaws works ok on iMac Intel OSX with the
 appropriate extra Windows-type software.

I might or might not have need of Jaws in the next year or so, and if
I do, it will happen fairly instantly, so I am doing some research in
 the meantime.

Would I be better off buying a cheapish Microsoft PC?

How much is the full Jaws software?

Can you get professionals to install and set it up? (I am in the UK,
but stateside answers will probably help).

 Thanks in advance.

Very astute observation. Yes as a matter of fact everybody who subscribes is
automatically placed on moderated status to protect the list from
potentially unwanted emails. That is how I always setup any list, although
it does cause some what more work over all it makes for a well ordered group
of people and nobody ever needs to read the messages that shouldn't be
posted. Trust me there are some rather colorful posts. Never the less
welcome to the list.

The program is perfectly fine Mike, don't worry about it at all. I wouldn't
have put it up there other wise you should know that already. If memory
serves it might have something to do with your security settings although I
have never run in to it with hat particular peace of software. Also the
program doesn't take an install, just a short cut on your desktop. Tab
around and see if you land on a check box that says something like don't ask
me again for this program or words to that effect.

What other changes did you make? Also, settings in JAWS beta can and do
affect settings in other full versions. I think I'd submit this as a
possible bug in JAWS10 beta via the bug report form. (I have not to this

You can toggle screen echo setting off highlighted by pressing Insert S
until you hear Jaws say none. The options are all, none and highlighted.

I am interested in why this is confusing for you though. How else will
 you
know which text you have selected if Jaws does not tell you? What method
 do
you use. Jaws will normally read out the text you select and say selected
 at
the end. If you want to stop the reading just press the control key once.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws for Mac, in the UK

2008-09-12 Thread allen ives
Thanks Flor, Rick.

I have had a look at the Freedom Scientific website for prices etc.
It is expensive, but I have a feeling that if (hopefully it IS an if)
I need Jaws, I will see it as a worthwhile investment.

Do you have to have ANY sight to operate Jaws, or can you do it blind?

Reason for the cryptic questions: my doctors have given me a 50-50
chance of serious eye problems in the next year or two. Now, I know
that means I have a 50 percent chance of NOT getting them, but I
believe in being prepared!

Thanks.

What other changes did you make? Also, settings in JAWS beta can and do
affect settings in other full versions. I think I'd submit this as a
possible bug in JAWS10 beta via the bug report form. (I have not to this
point downloaded the beta, strangely enough.)

You can toggle screen echo setting off highlighted by pressing Insert S
until you hear Jaws say none. The options are all, none and highlighted.

I am interested in why this is confusing for you though. How else will
  you
know which text you have selected if Jaws does not tell you? What method
  do
you use. Jaws will normally read out the text you select and say
  selected

Let's put it this way my friend, we've all got vision problems and that's
why we use JAWS in the first place. It is unfortunate that we need the
program but it's a good thing that it exists for people like all of us.

 Thanks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Copying Text.

2008-09-12 Thread Mandy
Hi thanks this has solved it for me.
I don't think I will need to report it as a Jaws 10 problem now although
having said that, when I tried one of the alternative voices which I quite
liked, I did seem to have some trouble with selected text but I don't see
how altering a voice would do that.

I love not having to enter to get into forms mode though. Brilliant and it
seems to make things faster.

 Hey Mandy,

 Try following:

Open Jaws configuration manager, navigate to User Options under Set

 Hope this helps.

2008-09-12 Thread Flor Lynch
Hi mandy,

Whether it is a JAWS10 issue or not, it is still a JAWS technical problem
nonetheless. Selected text is not supposed to be repeated as normal
behaviour with Screen Echo set to highlighted text. You shouldn't have to
switch screen echo to None for a solution to this alone.
