Re: [JAWS-Users] manage the daisy books.
Hi Mostafa, You can change the speed of the audio using ctrl+pg up and ctrl+pg down. Unfortunately I couldn't see keys for changing the volume. You can explore the menus to find what hotkeys you can use in the aplication. You can do this not only for FSReader, but for practicly all aplications. For more help with the reader you can listen or read the help material provided with the aplication itself. [JAWS-Users] List Guidelines Reminder
Here are the list guidelines, all members should read them carefully! Hello and welcome to the JAWS Users list. This list has been created for The purpose of discussing all aspects of the JAWS for Windows screen reader Program. So everything that pertains to JAWS is fair game. Such as asking about what software packages work well with JAWS or how to make them work even better with scripts, keyboard short cuts and so forth. Another example could be requesting information on how to do something in Microsoft Word, which as we all know works very well with JAWS, but you need to know how to do a certain task or want to learn a way to accomplish it more efficiently. Now this is a very important point in my opinion, asking the list for exact instructions every time is not a good thing to do for a major reason. It creates a dependency situation even if you don't realize it does. The ideal place I am hoping the list will arrive at some day is that everybody no matter how new they might happen to be with JAWS or computers will have the confidence to try things on their own, and yet feel if they get stuck the list will be there to help put them back on track. Trust me when I say that help is quicker to arrive for somebody who is well known to ask for it last than first. So try it yourself first what ever it might happen to be. If you get stuck then let the list know what you've done to try and resolve your current dilemma. Then I'm sure help will arrive with in short order. Next a post asking if there is a software package that does a specific task and works well with JAWS is perfectly fine. The rules of conduct are quite simple and straightforward. Be polite and Patient with others. There will be absolutely no fighting, and no bashing of Freedom Scientific on here at all. If you have a problem with them then I suggest you take it up with Freedom Scientific directly. Please try to keep subject lines relevant and descriptive as possible. Also any news letters except those that directly pertain to JAWS should not be posted to the list prior to receiving moderator approval. Attachments are removed before any message is sent to the list. This is done for your protection. The message list might state that there is an attachment but in fact Mailman does remove them. When contacting any of the list moderators privately please be descriptive in the subject line as to the purpose of the message. Many of us simply delete messages from people we don't know. At the present time there are over 200 subscribers to this list, so we can't possibly know everybody on here. Also, if you have a question for the list that falls within the guidelines, then post it accordingly. Don't contact the management team with questions that are more appropriate for the list itself. Your question may or may not receive an answer for a number of reasons. Everybody should familiarize themselves with the content contained in the footer message that accompanies every message posted to the list. There you will find the group web address along with some other relevant information pertaining to contacting the management team ETC. It is very frustrating to read a post asking for the group web address when the very next line states visit the JAWS Users List home page and the next line after that is the URL. Occasionally there might be some difficulty with your email address and you may receive an email from the Mailman program asking you to reactivate your account. Please do not simply delete this message. Instead open it and follow the directions to reactivate your account. If you do not after receiving a number of such messages then we will figure that you no longer wish to be a member of the list and remove your email address. The discussion of anything illegal is absolutely forbidden, along with flirting or other such inappropriate activities. this is not a high tech swap shop or anything of that nature at all. This means that goods and or services will not be bought or sold using this forum. If you know a given subject is off topic then don't post it. Simply placing off topic in the subject line does not make it all right. Cross-posting is not permitted, and members should only post in the following manner: Using the TO: field with only one list address. The SUBJECT: field should be short and to the point without including any member names. The reason for this is that in cases where people setup their message rules to go by the To: field often times such rules get fowled up and in effect do not work properly. Also cross posting might allow you to reach many lists at the same time but the fact is such a post might not be on topic for each and every list. This practice does nothing but clutter up such lists with unwanted off topic messages along with annoying the list moderators. Lastly please no jokes, virus warnings, recipes, safety tips, or pleas to help dying kids, should ever be forwarded to the list. No auto responders are to be used

[JAWS-Users] Alert document is empty
Hi folks, I recently received a PDF document and when I attempted to open it I received the following message: Alert document is empty. Undaunted by Jaws inability to recognize certain PDF formatting I proceeded to open it in note pad as a TXT file and received a blank screen with Jaws simply sounding top and bottom alert. Would it be safe to assume that because I receive no information using either file format that the document is in fact empty and I need to have the document resent? Re: [JAWS-Users] Alert document is empty
I have encountered the same problem with some PDF documents. The document is not empty. It was scanned as an image. Therefore, JAWS is unable to recognize it as text. I have yet to find a solution for this problem though. - Original Message - From: Larry Stansifer [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Saturday, November 01, 2008 8:01 AM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Alert document is empty Hi folks, I recently received a PDF document and when I attempted to open it I received the following message: Alert document is empty. Re: [JAWS-Users] Alert document is empty
If you look at the document in Windows Explorer with View/Details selected and it has a byte count of significantly more than 0 then you have the file in all probability. It is most likely a graphic, that is, a picture of text. What you are observing is that there is no text for NotePad or Adobe Reader to display. If you have Kurzweil or OpenBook or some other OCR programme you might be able to get them to open the document and scan it to recognize text. This is not usually all that satisfactory partly because the image may not be so clear or well scanned and the software can't discriminate the text in it all that well either. Sometimes you can print the file to a good printer then scan that into a programme like K1000 or OpenBook and get reasonable intelligence that way. You probably have the full document, just not in a form you can use. Frustrating isn't it. - Original Message - From: Larry Stansifer [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Saturday, November 01, 2008 9:01 AM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Alert document is empty Hi folks, I recently received a PDF document and when I attempted to open it I received the following message: Alert document is empty. [JAWS-Users] MS Word 2002 question
Hi All, Today when I tried to close a new document in Word 2002 I got this message. Microsoft Word This file is in use by another application or user. (C:\Documents and Settings\...\Normal.dot) OK I got this message once with something in the document and once with an empty document. Both times it was with document 1. I was cleaning up an email that I had copied to Word and that email was closed. So, this is why I am not quite understanding what is meant by Jaws telling me this application is in use by another application or user. I don't recall ever getting this type of message. I am running XP/Office Home 2002, Jaws 10, Outlook Express 6 and also running up a large bill with DoctorPhil. All advice and information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks much. Hi Mike. In the Options menu, Settings, and at the Save tab, there is a checkbox, checked, that indicates that you should be asked if the standard pattern normal.dot must be saved, every time you close Word. Uncheck this checkbox, and press ok, and you should bee done. Goldwave is a good one, go to www.goldwave.com for more information. To download JAWS scripts, go to www.blindgeekzone.net Goldwave is not free, you have to buy it. The scripts are free though. To convert files, do not open a new file, stay in the main window and on the file menu click batch processing. The goldwave scripts are found on the programmes page of the blind geek zone website. The goldwave audio tutorials are found on the audio page of the blind geek zone website. The tutorials are done by Rick Harmon and he is the owner of the blind geek zone website. Hi Hans, Are you referring to the Prompt to save normal template checkbox? If so, this checkbox was unchecked. I think what might have happened is that I might have had a document open and forgot about it. If I had done this would I have received the message I posted in my last email? Thanks for your help. Re: [JAWS-Users] converting MP3 files
Hi Candy. You can try Audiograbber, that is free, and by it selv can convert wave files to wma, and with supplying the Lame Encoder wich can be downloaded free also from the internet, it can convert to mp3 also. It is very accessable without any script for jaws, it works fine by default! You can search for Audiograbber on Google, that, as well as i remember, is hosting the site where it can be downloaded from. It is only approximate 1.4 megabyte. And the Lame_enc.dll is quit small too. I have used it since Jaws 4.01, and there has never been problems with using the program with Jaws. Good luck. [JAWS-Users] JAWS 10 beta expired?
A strange thing happened this morning that I'm wondering if particular to my computer or if this applies to others as well. I turned my computer on as normal and when done booting up I heard Jaws 10 beta version expired, contact freedom scientific. Following this and on subsequent boots nothing but silence, not even a 40 minute demo mode. This beta version has been working fine as I've been giving them feedback. I did not upgrade to the latest beta version a couple of weeks or so ago but have the one just before it. I know these beta versions expire once they release the final JAWS version and folks receive their CD's in the mail. Have they released the CD yet as I've not received or heard that they have. Fortunately I still have JAWS 9 on my machine so no big deal. However, I'm not looking forward to going to work Monday morning and having the same thing happen down there. Anyone else had this? Re: [JAWS-Users] converting MP3 files
Hi KK, Try this with the troublesome file: While the file in question is selected in the list where it is being stored, Press the F2 key to rename it. You are not actually going to rename the file, just change the file extension. Try changeing it from .wma, to .mp3, and see what happens. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 10 beta expired?
Hi, I am using version 10.0.419 with no experation date problems. I have heard that if you miss an update, it will break the beta update pattern. This is probably the reason why you are having this issue. It appears that you are locked out using version 10 until the official program release. Good luck.
