Hi,

The university of nevada in Reno recently developed an application
called TextSL which allows visually impaired to access the popular
virtual world of Second Life using a screen reader. A beta version
of this application can be downloaded for free on: http://www.textsl.org

We are looking for volunteers who would be willing to participate in
user studies in the Spring semester of 2009.

Re: [JAWS-Users] itunes question

2009-01-19 Thread Michael Hansen
Hi Chris,

I use iTunes with JAWS 10 and for the most part, I like it. The
accessibility that Freedom Scientific and Apple have added is really nice;
you can navigate the esencial areas of the program with no difficulty. Like
anything else, it does take some learning, but what doesn't?
If there are specific questions I can help you with, let me know.

[JAWS-Users] flash player question

2009-01-19 Thread Sherrie
Hi,
I would like to be able to watch the inauguration ceremonies with audio
description tomorrow on my computer..
I went to the website but it said that I will need flash player. How can I
tell if I have it or not?

I don't know how to access the sap channel or whatever on our regular TV.
Here is the info I got on another list:
Media Access Group at WGBH To Provide Closed
Captioning And Live Description for PBS's Inaugural Coverage

Described version of coverage will also stream
live on the Joint Congressional Committee on
Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC) web site,
http://www.inaugural.senate.gov/http://www.inaugural.senate.gov/

Boston, MA The Media Access Group at WGBH, a
non-profit service of the WGBH Educational
Foundation in Boston, Massachusetts, will provide
both closed captioning and live description of
Barack Obama's presidential inauguration for the
PBS presentation of Inauguration 2009, a NewsHour
special hosted by Jim Lehrer. The PBS coverage of
the inauguration airs live on Tuesday, January 20
from 11AM to 1:30PM EST. While live captioning is
an established feature of many television
broadcasts, live description, the creation at
time of air of a narration track imparting
information about visual elements that people who
are blind or visually impaired would miss, is a
rare service. Dunkin' Donuts is generously
sponsoring the description service for this
broadcast. In 1993, PBS's coverage of the Clinton
inauguration was the first live television
program that was made fully accessible to the
nation's 36 million deaf, hard-of-hearing, blind
and visually impaired viewers.

While details from the inaugural planning
committee are still forthcoming, PBS plans to
include coverage of Barack Obama's arrival at the
White House, excerpts of the church service and
Barack Obama's speech to the nation from the Capitol steps.

Hosted by Jim Lehrer of The NewsHour with Jim
Lehrer, the PBS presentation will feature
political analysts Mark Shields and David Brooks,
as well as a panel to provide historical context:

. Ellen Fitzpatrick, presidential historian and
professor at the University of New Hampshire
. Peniel Joseph, professor of history and
African-American studies at Brandeis University
. Richard Brookhiser, senior editor at National
Review and author of a series of biographies of
America's founders, including Alexander Hamilton and George Washington

WGBH is proud to take part in making this
historic event fully accessible to all PBS
viewers once again, says Media Access Group
director Larry Goldberg. And we're extremely
grateful to PBS, the team at MacNeil/Lehrer
Productions and to corporate sponsor of the live
description Dunkin' Donuts for the opportunity to
bring not only the audio of the inaugural
coverage to deaf and hard-of-hearing Americans,
but also the visual highlights of the occasion to
those who are blind or visually impaired.

Dunkin' Donuts, for many years a corporate
caption sponsor of local news broadcasts in the
Boston area, is sponsoring description for the
first time. Shannon Maxwell, field marketing
manager for Dunkin' Donuts says, Dunkin' Donuts
individual franchise owners are proud to play a
part of making this major event accessible to
blind and visually impaired audiences. We are
thrilled that our contribution will make the
images of the day come alive via description.

Closed captions display spoken dialogue as text
on the television screen. The live captions will
be typed by specially trained stenocaptioners
working from WGBH's Boston-based headquarters
and broadcast simultaneously with the live
program. The descriptive narration provided by
an expert team of describers will be audible
during pauses in program dialogue and will
identify speakers, describe settings and convey
other visual information about the event.
Captions can be accessed on televisions equipped
with built-in decoders (most televisions are
equipped), while viewers can hear descriptions by
switching to the Second Audio Program (SAP)
channel on their stereo TVs. The described
coverage will also be streamed live on the Joint
Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies
(JCCIC) web site at
http://www.inaugural.senate.gov/http://www.inaugural.senate.gov/

The Media Access Group at WGBH incorporates The
Caption Center, the world's first captioning
agency, founded in 1972; Descriptive Video
Service® (DVS®), which has made television, film
and video more accessible to blind and visually
impaired audiences since 1990; and the Carl and
Ruth Shapiro Family National Center for
Accessible Media (NCAM), a research and
development entity that builds on the success of
WGBH's access service departments to make
existing and emerging technologies more
accessible to these under-served
audiences. Members of the Media Access Group's
collective staff represent the leading resources and experts in their
fields.

I went to the site but the link for the video coverage is not there yet
since it is live coverage. So I could not click on it to see what it said.
I will go look for the flash player I guess. Maybe I could just do a search
for flash. Or maybe in the add remove software control panel.
Thanks,

Hi sherry
did an automatic message come on telling you that you need it, when trying
to use their services?
then it means that you have none installed yet or else no message info would
pop up.
alternately if you still want to check then go into system settings, from
there to software and check if something like adobe flashplayer or similar
is already on your pc.

rare service. Dunkin' Donuts is generously
sponsoring the description service for this
broadcast. In 1993, PBS's coverage of the Clinton
inauguration was the first live television
program that was made fully accessible to the
nation's 36 million deaf, hard-of-hearing, blind
and visually impaired viewers.

While details from the inaugural planning
committee are still forthcoming, PBS plans to
include coverage of Barack Obama's arrival at the
White House, excerpts of the church service and
Barack Obama's speech to the nation from the Capitol steps.

Hosted by Jim Lehrer of The NewsHour with Jim
Lehrer, the PBS presentation will feature
political analysts Mark Shields and David Brooks,
as well as a panel to provide historical context:

. Ellen Fitzpatrick, presidential historian and
professor at the University of New Hampshire
. Peniel Joseph, professor of history and
African-American studies at Brandeis University
. Richard Brookhiser, senior editor at National
Review and author of a series of biographies of
America's founders, including Alexander Hamilton and George Washington

WGBH is proud to take part in making this
historic event fully accessible to all PBS
viewers once again, says Media Access Group
director Larry Goldberg. And we're extremely
grateful to PBS, the team at MacNeil/Lehrer
Productions and to corporate sponsor of the live
description Dunkin' Donuts for the opportunity to
bring not only the audio of the inaugural
coverage to deaf and hard-of-hearing Americans,
but also the visual highlights of the occasion to
those who are blind or visually impaired.

Dunkin' Donuts, for many years a corporate
caption sponsor of local news broadcasts in the
Boston area, is sponsoring description for the
first time. Shannon Maxwell, field marketing
manager for Dunkin' Donuts says, Dunkin' Donuts
individual franchise owners are proud to play a
part of making this major event accessible to
blind and visually impaired audiences. We are
thrilled that our contribution will make the
images of the day come alive via description.

Closed captions display spoken dialogue as text
on the television screen. The live captions will
be typed by specially trained stenocaptioners
working from WGBH's Boston-based headquarters
and broadcast simultaneously with the live
program. The descriptive narration provided by
an expert team of describers will be audible
during pauses in program dialogue and will
identify speakers, describe settings and convey
other visual information about the event.
Captions can be accessed on televisions equipped
with built-in decoders (most televisions are
equipped), while viewers can hear descriptions by
switching to the Second Audio Program (SAP)
channel on their stereo TVs. The described
coverage will also be streamed live on the Joint
Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies
(JCCIC) web site at
http://www.inaugural.senate.gov/http://www.inaugural.senate.gov/

The Media Access Group at WGBH incorporates The
Caption Center, the world's first captioning
agency, founded in 1972; Descriptive Video
Service® (DVS®), which has made television, film
and video more accessible to blind and visually
impaired audiences since 1990; and the Carl and
Ruth Shapiro Family National Center for
Accessible Media (NCAM), a research and
development entity that builds on the success of
WGBH's access service

when you eventually can get into the site and start your application, it
should automatically redirect you to the site for the required plug in. most

I went to the site but the link for the video coverage is not there yet
since it is live coverage. So I could not click on it to see what it said.
I will go look for the flash player I guess. Maybe I could just do a
search

for flash. Or maybe in the add remove software control panel.
Thanks,

Hi Michael,

I hope you do not mind my jumping in on the iTunes conversation.

I've been using iTunes 8 and JAWS 10 for only the past few weeks. I've been
successful with syncing my iPod automatically, importing music CD and books,
and joining the book tracks and getting it set up so that a bookmark is set
when I stop the book. I would like to sync my iPod manually. I do not want
to have everything in my iTunes library sent to my iPod every time I sync.
I would like to choose whether or not to send the entire Music and audio
book lists, and select only the play lists I want. I see where you can
check and uncheck the box allowing you to manually sync, but I cannot find
where to be able to check and uncheck with lists to bring over to the iPod.
I've tried looking around with the JAWS cursor, but can't find anything to
check or uncheck.

Any light you can shed on this topic will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Annette

[JAWS-Users] Still having problems reading messages in OE with JAWS 9 and 10

2009-01-19 Thread Arianna Calesso
The subject line states part of my problem, but JAWS is notr reading internet
pages correctly either.

I've checked all the settings I can think of, but don't see any reason for this.

I have JAWS 9 AND 10 installed on my HP ZD7000 laptop with XP Pro.

After I installed JAWS 10 from the download on FS site, I uninstalled both 7.10
and 8. Could this have caused my present problem?

[JAWS-Users] Strange Jaws Problems

2009-01-19 Thread Marvin Hunkin
Hi.
using a toshiba a 300 satellite psa g4a, and i notice that when jaws starts
up, and my machine gives me a sound it is starting up and then another sound
for the desktop, jaws does not come up on the login screen, and got
automatic login, as the only user on this machine.
it takes ages to start up, and does a sort of wining or some sort of
whistle.
and then jaws starts up.
if i leave the machine say even for 10 minutes to do things, it stil
whistles, or jaws is a bit sluggish.
what could be causing this and how to fix this?
would a scandisk and defrag help.
had the machine 4 months, and just noticed this the last few weeks.
any suggestions.
cheers Marvin.

Look in the devices tab in preferences. That should give you the settings
you want.

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] itunes question

Thanks,
Annette

Hi Chris,

I use iTunes with JAWS 10 and for the most part, I like it. The
accessibility that Freedom Scientific and Apple have added is really nice;
you can navigate the esencial areas of the program with no difficulty. Like
anything else, it does take some learning, but what doesn't?
If there are specific questions I can help you with, let me know.

Also, where can I get itunes?
