[JAWS-Users] Desk top

2009-02-16 Thread Waleed

Hello,
Every time I reboot my PC Jaws reads the Desk Top from beginning to end.
It's annoying, anyway to stop it? Thanks.

[JAWS-Users] Need to Make a Permanent Setting Change

2009-02-16 Thread Victor
Hi Folks,

I did manage to make the verbosity change about highlighting virtual text that
Flor put up, wherein she stated that I need to change the setting for
highlighted text under the virtual cursor, highlight to the virtual cursor.

Sorry, I can't remember the words exactly off-hand.

Suffice it to say, I need to make this setting permanent, as this is getting
frustrating to have to do it every time I go into Outlook Express or Internet
Explorer.

Does anyone know how to make this setting change permanent in Configuration
Manager.

I'm using Jaws 10, latest build.

Thanks for all your help.

Re: [JAWS-Users] burning a DVD

2009-02-16 Thread Brian Lee

Hello Holger,

I created an audio file that describes how to use DVDFlick with JAWS. It is
far from being a quality recording as I used my laptop and a not too high
quality microphone. I also am not use to doing a lot of recording and there
were a lot of breathy sounds in the recording. However, I thought it would
be a better way to try and give some ideas for using DVDFlick with JAWS than
writing out the steps. The MP3 file is about 41 MB in size so I put it on
Sendspace. The file name is JAWS with DVDFlick.MP3. Here is the SendSpace
link where you can download the file:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/rwutad

The link on SendSpace is only good for a few days.

Take care.

Yep, it isn't exactly clear how ever above the subject line it says
something about the webinar that you are trying to sign up for. So, I put
that in the subjet and again in the body and continued on. I didn't hear
anything today.

Hi, I recently went to the fs website to register for the below webinars
and clicked on the "register" link. That brought me to a web page which
allowed me to enter comments. There was nothing there relating to
registering for the classes. Does anyone know why this is happening? I
tried it several times, but always landed on the same page. Maybe I'm
doing something wrong or should I contact fs? If anyone here knows

I guess they are still looking for feedback, and that seems to have been
foremost in the mind of whoever set things up there. So you could put in
your own subject line, it seems. (I didn't pursue it beyond looking at all
the fields.)

Understandable, however, the subject was not filled in, so even though I had

Yep, it isn't exactly clear how ever above the subject line it says
something about the webinar that you are trying to sign up for. So, I put
that in the subjet and again in the body and continued on. I didn't hear
anything today.

Hi, I recently went to the fs website to register for the below webinars
and clicked on the "register" link. That brought me to a web page which
allowed me to enter comments. There was nothing there relating to
registering for the classes. Does anyone know why this is happening? I
tried it several times, but always landed on the same page. Maybe I'm
doing something wrong or should I contact fs? If anyone here knows
anything about this, I'd appreciate knowing. Thanks in advance.

Hi listers. On the February FS cast, Dan Clark announced that FS would
be

holding a series of free online webinars this spring for JAWS users.
Various training topics will be covered. This sounds like a great
opportunity for those who are new to JAWS or those who just want to
brush-up on their JAWS skills. To learn more about these webinars and
registration details, visit :

You will need to go to control pannel and find the Windows Live Installer,
when you click that, it will bring up a list of windows live programs
installed on your computer. It will allow you to select the one, ones which
you want to uninstall. Click the continue button.

Go to Microsoft.com/downloads
Then pick the heading internet explorer, from there pick the version that
says November 2007, that is the one you want.

Re: [JAWS-Users] fFree JAWS Webinars

2009-02-16 Thread jo luland
Hi, I recently went to the fs website to register for the below webinars and
clicked on the "register" link. That brought me to a web page which allowed
me to enter comments. There was nothing there relating to registering for
the classes. Does anyone know why this is happening? I tried it several
times, but always landed on the same page. Maybe I'm doing something wrong
or should I contact fs? If anyone here knows anything about this, I'd
appreciate knowing. Thanks in advance.

Hi listers. On the February FS cast, Dan Clark announced that FS would be
holding a series of free online webinars this spring for JAWS users.
Various training topics will be covered. This sounds like a great
opportunity for those who are new to JAWS or those who just want to
brush-up on their JAWS skills. To learn more about these webinars and

Re: [JAWS-Users] Also Having Problems Selecting, Copying and Pasting Text

2009-02-16 Thread Flor Lynch
Hi Victor,

Virtual Cursor Options: They work on a per-application basis - until or
unless you change them again. At least, that's my experience. (I did this
in a few cases because my partial selections of text would not copy, e.g.,
from an untagged .pdf document. when I changed to from virtual cursor, the
copy function there was restored to what it had been as of JAWS8).

(Anecdotally, it might appear that there has been some deterioration of the
copy full screen content functionality in JAWS10 compared with how it worked
in JAWS9.)

Hi Flor,

Thank you for the suggestions, they worked like a charm.

Are the settings you make using the insert/jaws key+V permanent, or
temporary?

If they are temporary, how does one make them permanent through
Configuration Manager?

Thanks for the help again.

[JAWS-Users] Strange Firewall Message

2009-02-16 Thread Gerald Levy

Happy Presidents Day! Lately, whenever I turn on my computer, JAWS announces
"Your computer may be at risk. No firewall is turned on...". However, I have
checked the Windows Firewall settings on the Control Panel, and Windows
Firewall is definitely turned on. What could be triggering this strange
message, and how do I get rid of it? I'm running JAWS 9 with XP Pro.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Computer with broken fan

2009-02-16 Thread Dale Leavens
If you can find your way around inside of a drawer you should be able to
find your way around inside a computer.

If that is too challenging then I have no advice what ever!

What does this have to do with Jaws? I don't know for sure but it is
nevertheless remarkable!

Hi,
You're talking about the chip fan and they too can beoiled in the same
way.

There is however another one, in the power supply.
Again you should have some basic knowledge about electrical things and a
fair bit of mechanical aptitude. The power supply dismounts from the case
with 4 screws, the cover of the supply comes off with 4 flat-head
Phillips
screws, the fan is mounted to the back of the supply behind the grill
with 4

plastic-tapping screws of a fairly large diameter.
Taking out a supply means disconnecting the 40-pin motherboard connector,
probably a 4-pin p4 connector, all power cables to your hard drive and
floppy, and well make sure you know what you are doing before trying
this

at home.
Once you've done it a couple of times it's cake.

It can fry it. There are two fans: The PC fan, and the motherboard fan.
The computer tries to save itself, but there is only so much it can do.
The

PC fan can be fixed (by a replacement fan) fairly easily. When the
motherboard fan goes, so does the motherboard; and that all takes longer
and

is more expensive.

Thanks.

And if I might add... If you are going to oil the fan, as I have also done,
use something like 3 in 1 oil. Do not use WD40. WD40 breaks down and
evaporates in a very short time. 3 in 1 oil does not break down and will
last a very long time.

Hi,
If you are into fixing things, many of these fans just need a drop of
lubricant. There is usually a sticker on the back side of the middle of the
fan under which is either the backend of the motor shaft or a small rubber
plug covering the former. Removing the plug, oiling appropriately and
putting the sticker back on should get you a couple more years of fan life.
Purists wil say "buy a new one", they are cheap online.
It has worked for me in many an emergency.

I very much doubt that is slowing the computer. I have one old machine where

the fan doesn't always run. Allow it to cool, then when you turn it on
insert something insulated and small. I use little stir sticks from the
hospital cafeteria, into the vent slots for the fan and give the blades a
little flick or two or three or four. I can often thus get the fan spinning.

If the circuitry gets too warm you certainly get thermal run-away but that
will cause all sort of dysfunction not just slow boot-up time.

I suppose the memory or other self check may be failing and re-starting
several times thus slowing boot-up.

I'd not worry too much about what's in the box already. Load the page you
want as your home page, open the Tools menu and choose Internet Options,
Tab to the "Use current" button and press it. That will change your home
page to the address you're on. If you want a blank page when you start
Internet Explorer, there is a Use Blank button which does what it says.

If you have Internet Explorer 7, where you can have multiple home pages,
you just need to open all the pages you want, make sure focus is on the
specific one you want to have focus when you start Internet Explorer
again, and then go to Tools, Internet Options, Use Current. I think you're
restricted to about six or seven home pages, but that's enough for most
people!

Re: [JAWS-Users] I'm frustrated I tried to change home page andcannot

2009-02-16 Thread Griffiths, Steve
I'd not worry too much about what's in the box already. Load the page you want
as your home page, open the Tools menu and choose Internet Options, Tab to the
"Use current" button and press it. That will change your home page to the
address you're on. If you want a blank page when you start Internet Explorer,
there is a Use Blank button which does what it says.

If you have Internet Explorer 7, where you can have multiple home pages, you
just need to open all the pages you want, make sure focus is on the specific
one you want to have focus when you start Internet Explorer again, and then go
to Tools, Internet Options, Use Current. I think you're restricted to about six
or seven home pages, but that's enough for most people!

You need to select the text line by line, and then delete. To get to the
beginning of a line, press the home key. Then press shift-end to select,
then press delete.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Also Having Problems Selecting, Copying and Pasting Text

2009-02-16 Thread Flor Lynch
Regarding your latter two copying and pasting problems, perhaps 'copy from
virtual cursor' may help as well. however, this could be a wider (i.e.
video display) issue, or something else which I don't know. Have you got
another JAWS version with which to try these things? If so, it'd be a good
idea to use that instead, if only to see whether the problems are reproduced
there also. If not, some bug or other in JAWS10 is indicated!

Your problem is distinct from the other person's. In JAWS Verbosity Options
dialogue (with insert+v), virtual cursor options, change copy full screen
content to 'from virtual cursor' (with the spacebar).

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Also Having Problems Selecting,Copying and Pasting
Text

Hi Folks,

Like that other person who was having trouble, quite often, in fact, this
happens all the time, when I go to copy text from a web page into a
document, notepad, WordPad or e-mail, I get some kind of code instead of the
text I've highlighted, copied and pasted.

This is getting fairly troublesome, as I often do this type of copying and
pasting to help friends with problems they may have, and where I find a
relevant bit of text on the net that can help them.

I'm using Jaws 10, latest build, Windows XP, Word 2003 and Outlook Express
6.

As far as I know, all of my settings are configured properly with the
configuration manager under highlighting options, and so I'm at a loss to
understand why this is.

I also have a problem where I am composing an e-mail, and, when I press the
down arrow in combination with the shift key to select the text, the line
will select, however, half of the words seem to be selected, as opposed to
the word. I mean it's like that function, called smart highlighting or
something like that, is turned off.

I've also come across a time or two, where I want to highlight a few words
in an e-mail message, whether reading to copy to another message, or just
composing the message for copying and pasting to a spot further down in the
message, or what ever, where, instead of the whole word being selected only,
the entire word is selected, right along with half, or a few letters of the
next word.

Can anyone help me with this.

Sorry for the long message, but I wasn't sure if those two things below were
significant or not.

Thanks all.

Hi,
You're talking about the chip fan and they too can beoiled in the same
way.

There is however another one, in the power supply.
Again you should have some basic knowledge about electrical things and a
fair bit of mechanical aptitude. The power supply dismounts from the case
with 4 screws, the cover of the supply comes off with 4 flat-head Phillips
screws, the fan is mounted to the back of the supply behind the grill with
4

plastic-tapping screws of a fairly large diameter.
Taking out a supply means disconnecting the 40-pin motherboard connector,
probably a 4-pin p4 connector, all power cables to your hard drive and
floppy, and well make sure you know what you are doing before trying this
at home.
Once you've done it a couple of times it's cake.

It can fry it. There are two fans: The PC fan, and the motherboard fan.
The computer tries to save itself, but there is only so much it can do.
The

PC fan can be fixed (by a replacement fan) fairly easily. When the
motherboard fan goes, so does the motherboard; and that all takes longer

is more expensive.

Well, as a Vista user, I can tell you that there have been a lot of updates
coming from Microsoft lately. These seem to load ahead of the Jaws
software. I had someone sighted here once and asked them to watch my screen
as the computer booted up. Immediately after the windows startup sound, the
login screen popped up as it always did. The lag time is just waiting for
Jaws to catch up with the computer. I know that the hard drive is working
on something because I can hear it loading files. Now, what is being loaded
ahead of Jaws, I do not know. I do know this much. 1, there is a really
long time between the windows startup sound and Jaws speaking. 2, Windows
loads as it should. 3. there is something being loaded ahead of Jaws that
is causing it to drag. And if this is also happening on XP machines, then I
can only assume that it's a Jaws issue. Version 9 didn't do this. So, what
the heck is Jaws doing that's causing it to be so slow in launching?
It's more a curiosity than a problem.

Hi,
One more thing for the person with the slow Jaws startup, try getting a copy
of bootvis, you'll have to Google for it. It's a Microsoft program for
perking up your PC's startup.
Run it and on the Trace menu, choose optimize system and press enter. This
will reboot your pc and organize the files for faster startup.
You've done everything else I can think of other than to disabling something
you've recently added that runs at startup if any.

Those fans are there for a reason. They help to keep the computer cool. If

it overheats, it can be damaged beyond repair.
