[JAWS-Users] MySpace vs. Facebook
Again, I'd say that's a matter of perception, and/or what you're trying to do. I used to agree; Myspace wasn't great for accessibility. And yes, it still has room for improvement...but for adding friends, reading blogs, reading/creating bulletins and messages, it works pretty well. Doing stuff with music, as far as adding music to your profile, is still a nightmare. Facebook works well for that if you use the iLike application, which you can find in Facebook's apps section under Music. VERY cool application. --- Follow me on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/wesderby Find me on Facebook.com: Just search for Wes Derby. -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of mike and cutie marquardt Sent: Sunday, March 22, 2009 6:55 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Facebook: is it accessible? facebook is axcessible with jaws nine and ten I use nine with face book and it works real well it doesn't work well at all if you try to use myspace though - Original Message - From: "Mich" To: Sent: Sunday, March 22, 2009 6:36 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Facebook: is it accessible? > hi Erin > > I have used facebook by that I meen that I am on face book but I have not > found it to be that accessible. [JAWS-Users] Facebook & Twitter
I've been on the "new" FaceBook, and personally don't fine it very twitter-like at all. Personally, I like both, but find Twitter much morre accessible...Though, for a truly accessible experience, would recommend using AccessibleTwitter.com once you're signed up for Twitter...Just an easier interface, and actually works pretty well on Pocket PC SmartPhones. :) --- Follow me on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/wesderby Find me on Facebook.com: Just search for Wes Derby. -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Donald Marang Sent: Sunday, March 22, 2009 6:37 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Facebook: is it accessible? Re: [JAWS-Users] Facebook: is it accessible?
Hi, Erin. I'm using it pretty well with JAWS 10. I find some parts of the site work better with FireFox, but initial set-up of my profile seemed to work better for me with Internet Explorer (though, since they've redesigned the site in the last couple weeks, I don't know if that's still true). I did my initial registration with FireFox, and used WebVissum to copy the captcha code successfully. My guess is, you'll have to go to JAWS 9 or 10. Just a guess though. --- Follow me on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/wesderby Find me on Facebook.com: Just search for Wes Derby. -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Erin Pruitt Sent: Saturday, March 21, 2009 7:07 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Facebook: is it accessible? This is a very common error message. It probably means the web page has been removed or it is being updated and is currently unavailable. Re: [JAWS-Users] Creating a Play List in W M Player
Hi, The following website has a number of Jaws tutorials and one is on Windows Media Player 11. It goes over how to make a playlist but it really sounds complicated. I am so glad I switched my music to iTunes which is much easier when you get the hang of it. To check out what I used to do with WMP 11 I just went to my music folder and highlighted several songs in a folder and then pressed the applications key. One of the choices was Add to Windows Media Player list. When I chose this the songs started playing and I did control F several times to jump ahead to the next song so I could be sure it was playing the whole list I selected. I think you can also just highlight as many songs as you like and press play from the list that appears when you press the applications key. It will then begin to play the list. To me this is the simplest way since I have a lot of trouble navigating the library. I used to just keep the songs in the My Music and then just highlight the ones I wanted to listen to. Or I would make a folder and copy a selection of songs into it to more or less act as a playlist when you chose all of them and used the applications key and "Play". Re: [JAWS-Users] Vista administrative rights
Hello Brian, Chris, E.J., & Rick, We would like to thank all of you for the user account information & detailed instructions. I will share this with my friend. With this information I'm sure he will be able to get his computer on the right track. Thanks again, take care. Mike - Original Message - From: "Brian Lee" To: Sent: Sunday, March 22, 2009 2:12 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Vista administrative rights Hello Mike, You can easily turn the user account control off in Vista. When the search box comes up for the control panel type in "user account control" (without the quotes) and use tab key until you get to the choice for turning the user account control on or off. Press enter key on the link. In the resultant box check or uncheck the checkbox using spacebar and use tab key to the OK button and press spacebar. There will be a confirmation dialog that gives a warning and you will need to confirm that you want to turn off the user account control if that is what you chose to do. I really don't suggest that you turn user account control off. If you choose to then be sure that all other security programs are up-to-date and active. What I suggest is that you run UAC in quiet mode. The easiest way to do that is to download TweakUAC and use it. After downloading TweakUAC you do not have to install it. When using it for the first time you might need to accept a license agreement. If I remember right, I might have had to use JAWS cursor to find the button or graphic for accepting the license, but I am not sure if that is right. If you turn off UAC, the protected mode for Internet Explorer 7 is also turned off and not active. Below is some additional info that you might want to consider along with a link where TweakUAC can be downloaded. When you use TweakUAC there will be choices for turning UAC off, leaving it on or using it in quiet mode. Running it in quiet mode will prevent the elevation prompts from running but will keep Internet Explorer's protected mode active. . The IE7 protected mode is off if UAC is disabled. It is based on the User Interface Privilege Isolation technology introduced in Vista to control such things as user permission levels. When Internet Explorer 7 is running in Protected Mode (which is the default in all but the "Trusted" security zone) the process runs with low rights, even if Internet Explorer is being run by an administrator. This means that even if an attacker defeated all defense mechanisms and got control of the Internet Explorer process and managed to run some arbitrary code, it would be severely limited in what it could do. Nearly all of the file system and registry would be off limits for writing, reducing the ability of an exploit to modify the system or harm your files. The code wouldn't have enough privileges to install software, put files in your Startup folder, hijack browser settings, or do other nasty things. If you download and use TweakUAC you will be able to run UAC in its quiet mode. In such a mode, you keep all the positive effects of UAC, such as Internet Explorer operating in the protected mode, applications starting without the administrative privileges by default, etc. The only thing that gets changed is that you will no longer see the infamous "Windows needs your permission to continue" messages whenever you attempt to make a change to your Vista configuration, or when you run a program that needs administrative rights. http://www.tweak-uac.com/download/ Brian Lee brianl...@charter.net Brian Lee brianl...@charter.net - Original Message - From: "Mike & Barbara" To: "jaws-users-list" Sent: Sunday, March 22, 2009 1:30 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Vista administrative rights > Hi All, > > A friend has just become active with Jaws again. The only thing that gets changed is that you will no longer see the infamous "Windows needs your permission to continue" messages whenever you attempt to make a change to your Vista configuration, or when you run a program that needs administrative rights. http://www.tweak-uac.com/download/ Brian Lee brianl...@charter.net Brian Lee brianl...@charter.net - Original Message - From: "Mike & Barbara" To: "jaws-users-list" Sent: Sunday, March 22, 2009 1:30 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Vista administrative rights Hi All, A friend has just become active with Jaws again. Re: [JAWS-Users] Facebook: is it accessible?
Erin, There is a very good article covering Facebook accessibility in the current issue of the American Foundation For The Blind online magazine" called Access World". I think it would be worth a read. Hello, everyone- I am wondering if anyone is using Facebook successfully with Jaws. I tried to set up an account but had difficulty with the audio security code you have to use (since copying the code seen in the window is not an option). My husband is sighted and said he could help me set it up, but I'm wondering if it will work with Jaws or just something that will be frustrating for me. I am currently using Jaws 7. [JAWS-Users] Creating a Play List in W M Player
Hello Friends, I just went through a tutorial for Windows Media Player 11, but it is not in JAWS format. Can some one Please give me instructions for creating a Play List with Windows Media Player. I am using JAWS 9.0.56,, XP-Home and W M Player 11, and I have spent hours trying to figure this out. Apparently W M Player is not very JAWS Friendly, but I do not want to try that Winamps program. Up till now, I was content to play one song at a time, but now, I want to play the entire album or a couple of albums at one time! So, then I need to create a "Play List". While in IE8 I experienced some sound distortion. The only way I could remove the sound distortion was to unload jaws and hot-key it back. I am running the latest version of jaws 10 and XP Pro. I have been using IE7 without any problems I would appreciate any help on this topic. [JAWS-Users] Vista administrative rights
Hi All, A friend has just become active with Jaws again. He has not used Jaws since version 3.5 or there abouts and not used Jaws in over 5 years. He now has a computer with Vista Home Premium & Jaws 10.0.1139. When he tries to make changes a dialogue box comes up saying something about administrative rights. He then presses space bar on okay and moves on. I am an XP user and would like to know the steps to tell him how to keep dialogue boxes such as these from coming up. Would the same steps be taken in Vista that you take with XP? If not could someone please supply us with step by step instructions? Thank you all very much for your help. Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] Facebook: is it accessible?
Hi, Erin, I use Facebook, and I find that JAWS interacts best with the mobile version of the site: m.facebook.com. I tried to set up an account but had difficulty with the audio security code you have to use (since copying the code seen in the window is not an option). My husband is sighted and said he could help me set it up, but I'm wondering if it will work with Jaws or just something that will be frustrating for me. I am currently using Jaws 7. Are all of these postings commenting on the old FaceBook or the new more real time, dynamic, twitter like interface introduced within the last two weeks? I currently don't use FaceBook or Twitter, but I am interested and am considering both. Re: [JAWS-Users] Facebook: is it accessible?
Well, that's a shame, as your version of JAWS won't work with Firefox and Webvisum, an add-on that allows you to solve these codes. -- Chris Hallsworth e-mail: christopher...@googlemail.com MSN: ch9...@hotmail.com Skype: chrishallsworth7266 - Original Message - From: "Erin Pruitt" To: Sent: Sunday, March 22, 2009 2:06 AM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Facebook: is it accessible? Hello, everyone- I am wondering if anyone is using Facebook successfully with Jaws. I tried to set up an account but had difficulty with the audio security code you have to use (since copying the code seen in the window is not an option). My husband is sighted and said he could help me set it up, but I'm wondering if it will work with Jaws or just something that will be frustrating for me. I am currently using Jaws 7.
