[JAWS-Users] MySpace vs. Facebook

2009-03-22 Thread Wes Derby
Again, I'd say that's a matter of perception, and/or what you're trying to
do. I used to agree; Myspace wasn't great for accessibility. And yes, it
still has room for improvement...but for adding friends, reading blogs,
reading/creating bulletins and messages, it works pretty well. Doing stuff
with music, as far as adding music to your profile, is still a nightmare.
Facebook works well for that if you use the iLike application, which you can
find in Facebook's apps section under Music. VERY cool application.

[JAWS-Users] Facebook & Twitter

2009-03-22 Thread Wes Derby
I've been on the "new" FaceBook, and personally don't fine it very
twitter-like at all. Personally, I like both, but find Twitter much morre
accessible...Though, for a truly accessible experience, would recommend
using AccessibleTwitter.com once you're signed up for Twitter...Just an
easier interface, and actually works pretty well on Pocket PC SmartPhones.

Are all of these postings commenting on the old FaceBook or the new more

Re: [JAWS-Users] Facebook: is it accessible?

2009-03-22 Thread Wes Derby
Hi, Erin.

I'm using it pretty well with JAWS 10. I find some parts of the site work
better with FireFox, but initial set-up of my profile seemed to work better
for me with Internet Explorer (though, since they've redesigned the site in
the last couple weeks, I don't know if that's still true). I did my initial
registration with FireFox, and used WebVissum to copy the captcha code
successfully.

My guess is, you'll have to go to JAWS 9 or 10. Just a guess though.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Facebook: is it accessible?

Hello, everyone-
I am wondering if anyone is using Facebook successfully with Jaws. I tried
to set up an account but had difficulty with the audio security code you
have to use (since copying the code seen in the window is not an option).
My husband is sighted and said he could help me set it up, but I'm wondering
if it will work with Jaws or just something that will be frustrating for me.
I am currently using Jaws 7.

Thanks in advance for your input,
Erin

Karen,
Just the F3 key by itself to get the search started. Then, to find other
instances of the same search criteria, just keep pressing the F3 key.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Creating a Play List in W M Player

2009-03-22 Thread Silly Goose
Hi,
The following website has a number of Jaws tutorials and one is on Windows
Media Player 11. It goes over how to make a playlist but it really sounds
complicated. I am so glad I switched my music to iTunes which is much
easier when you get the hang of it.

To check out what I used to do with WMP 11 I just went to my music folder
and highlighted several songs in a folder and then pressed the applications
key. One of the choices was Add to Windows Media Player list. When I chose
this the songs started playing and I did control F several times to jump
ahead to the next song so I could be sure it was playing the whole list I
selected.
I think you can also just highlight as many songs as you like and press play
from the list that appears when you press the applications key. It will
then begin to play the list.
To me this is the simplest way since I have a lot of trouble navigating the
library. I used to just keep the songs in the My Music and then just
highlight the ones I wanted to listen to. Or I would make a folder and copy
a selection of songs into it to more or less act as a playlist when you
chose all of them and used the applications key and "Play".

Hello Friends,
I just went through a tutorial for Windows Media Player 11, but it is not in
JAWS format.

Can some one Please give me instructions for creating a Play List with
Windows Media Player.

I am using JAWS 9.0.56,, XP-Home and W M Player 11, and I have spent hours
trying to figure this out.

Apparently W M Player is not very JAWS Friendly, but I do not want to try
that Winamps program.
Up till now, I was content to play one song at a time, but now, I want to
play the entire album or a couple of albums at one time!
So, then I need to create a "Play List".

Thanks very much, for any assistance.

Hello Mike,

You can easily turn the user account control off in Vista. Move into the
start menu and move off of the search box. Press C until you get to control
panel and press enter key. When the search box comes up for the control
panel type in "user account control" (without the quotes) and use tab key
until you get to the choice for turning the user account control on or off.
Press enter key on the link. In the resultant box check or uncheck the
checkbox using spacebar and use tab key to the OK button and press spacebar.
There will be a confirmation dialog that gives a warning and you will need
to confirm that you want to turn off the user account control if that is
what you chose to do.

I really don't suggest that you turn user account control off. If you
choose to then be sure that all other security programs are up-to-date and
active. What I suggest is that you run UAC in quiet mode. The easiest way
to do that is to download TweakUAC and use it. After downloading TweakUAC
you do not have to install it. When using it for the first time you might
need to accept a license agreement. If I remember right, I might have had
to use JAWS cursor to find the button or graphic for accepting the license,
but I am not sure if that is right. If you turn off UAC, the protected mode
for Internet Explorer 7 is also turned off and not active. Below is some
additional info that you might want to consider along with a link where
TweakUAC can be downloaded. When you use TweakUAC there will be choices for
turning UAC off, leaving it on or using it in quiet mode. Running it in
quiet mode will prevent the elevation prompts from running but will keep
Internet Explorer's protected mode active. .

The IE7 protected mode is off if UAC is disabled. It is based on the User
Interface Privilege Isolation technology introduced in Vista to control such
things as user permission levels.

When Internet Explorer 7 is running in Protected Mode (which is the default
in all but the "Trusted" security zone) the process runs with low rights,
even if Internet Explorer is being run by an administrator. This means that
even if an attacker defeated all defense mechanisms and got control of the
Internet Explorer process and managed to run some arbitrary code, it would
be severely limited in what it could do. Nearly all of the file system and
registry would be off limits for writing, reducing the ability of an exploit
to modify the system or harm your files. The code wouldn't have enough
privileges to install software, put files in your Startup folder, hijack
browser settings, or do other nasty things.

If you download and use TweakUAC you will be able to run UAC in its quiet
mode. In such a mode, you keep all the positive effects of UAC, such as
Internet Explorer operating in the protected mode, applications starting
without the administrative privileges by default, etc. The only thing that
gets changed is that you will no longer see the infamous "Windows needs your
permission to continue" messages whenever you attempt to make a change to
your Vista configuration, or when you run a program that needs
administrative rights.

Hi Listers,
I installed IE8 after I understood it was out of Beta, but the microsoft Web
site still refers to the Beta release as the most current download. While
in IE8 I experienced some sound distortion. The only way I could remove the
sound distortion was to unload jaws and hot-key it back. I am running the
latest version of jaws 10 and XP Pro. I have been using IE7 without any
problems I would appreciate any help on this topic.

I have not experienced any sound problems with IE 8 using JAWS 9 and XP Pro,
so maybe there's an issue with JAWS 10.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Creating a Play List in W M Player

With Best Regards,

Re: [JAWS-Users] Vista administrative rights

2009-03-22 Thread Brian Lee

Hello, everyone-
I am wondering if anyone is using Facebook successfully with Jaws. I
tried to set up an account but had difficulty with the audio security code
you have to use (since copying the code seen in the window is not an
option). My husband is sighted and said he could help me set it up, but
I'm wondering if it will work with Jaws or just something that will be
frustrating for me. I am currently using Jaws 7.

Thanks in advance for your input,

Hi Listers,
I installed IE8 after I understood it was out of Beta, but the microsoft
Web site still refers to the Beta release as the most current download.
While in IE8 I experienced some sound distortion. The only way I could
remove the sound distortion was to unload jaws and hot-key it back. I am
running the latest version of jaws 10 and XP Pro. I have been using IE7
without any problems I would appreciate any help on this topic.

Vista only offers on and off, you are thinking about windows 7. Even then
on both of these OS's you still will get admin requests still, it's simply

Look for the User Access Control option and set it to a different
level, there should be details about each level in there. Not in
front of a Vista computer at the moment so I can't give you more
details.

[JAWS-Users] Creating a Play List in W M Player

2009-03-22 Thread Alan Dicey
Hello Friends,
I just went through a tutorial for Windows Media Player 11, but it is not in
JAWS format.

Can some one Please give me instructions for creating a Play List with Windows
Media Player.

I am using JAWS 9.0.56,, XP-Home and W M Player 11, and I have spent hours
trying to figure this out.

Apparently W M Player is not very JAWS Friendly, but I do not want to try that
Winamps program.
Up till now, I was content to play one song at a time, but now, I want to play
the entire album or a couple of albums at one time!
So, then I need to create a "Play List".

Thanks very much, for any assistance.

With Best Regards,

[JAWS-Users] Installing IE 8

2009-03-22 Thread Roger Levine
Hi Listers,
I installed IE8 after I understood it was out of Beta, but the microsoft Web
site still refers to the Beta release as the most current download. While in
IE8 I experienced some sound distortion. The only way I could remove the sound
distortion was to unload jaws and hot-key it back. I am running the latest
version of jaws 10 and XP Pro. I have been using IE7 without any problems I
would appreciate any help on this topic.

[JAWS-Users] Menu question with IE 8

2009-03-22 Thread Mike & Barbara
Hi All,

I have a set of steps to configure Windows XP for Jaws. I will post the
particular steps in question then ask the question.

Configuring the Menus of MSIE

list of 6 items.
1. . Open the tools menu of MSIE.
2. Cursor down to "Internet Options" and press ENTER.
3. Press CTRL-SHIFT-TAB to access the "advanced" property sheet.
4. Press the letter "E" until the checkbox labeled "Enable Personalized
Favorites menu" is located.
5. Press SPACEBAR to uncheck this option.
6. Press ENTER
list end

Yesterday I installed IE 8 and choice in step #4 from the list above does
not exist in IE 8. Would you all let me know if it exists' in IE 7? If
this choice is in IE 7 but not in IE 8, would someone please suggest a
possible choice of a similar nature from IE 8? I have looked and would like
to make sure I'm not overlooking something. Thank you all very much for
your desperately needed continuous help & support, take care.

Hello, everyone-
I am wondering if anyone is using Facebook successfully with Jaws. I
tried to set up an account but had difficulty with the audio security
code you have to use (since copying the code seen in the window is not
an option). My husband is sighted and said he could help me set it
up, but I'm wondering if it will work with Jaws or just something that
will be frustrating for me. I am currently using Jaws 7.

Thanks in advance for your input,
Erin

Hello all,
JAWS has a feature to improve support in edit and rich edit controls.
This
can be found in Configuration Manager, in the text processing
dialogue. By

default it is unchecked, and I think FS should have this turned on by
default in default.jcf. What do you think? Do check this feature out
as you

may find that edit controls will be more responsive and accurate.

[JAWS-Users] difficulty with jaws finding text in outlook express

2009-03-22 Thread KB
I saw in the edit menu control f plus t but must be doing something wrong. I
want to find text to see where I made mistakes after review with the
spellchecker. I am using word 2000 and that spell checker. control f seems
to be command for forward instead of find. What to do? thank you ahead of
time. I want to see which sentence I made the error.

Oh, matters little. Thought it was well said. I enjoy finding little gems of
wisdom here and there. It can brighten the day. :-)

Um, er, I'm not sure it's his signature.

That just could be something he wrote. I mean, I've emailed him
a lot and, well, I've never seen that before in my life.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Facebook: is it accessible?

2009-03-22 Thread Chris Hallsworth
Well, that's a shame, as your version of JAWS won't work with Firefox and
Webvisum, an add-on that allows you to solve these codes.

Thanks in advance for your input,
Erin
