[JAWS-Users] reading a scanned pdf file with Jaws

Greetings,

I wonder if someone could advise how best to read a scanned pdf file with
Jaws 11? For information, I am also running the latest version of K1000 if
at all it would make any difference.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 11 Update Posted 11-24-09

Hello all,

We have released the update this afternoon. You should be able to locate it
now if you use Check for Updates. Here is what it includes:

Enhancements in JAWS 11.0.746 (November 2009)

The following is a list of items addressed or added between the final JAWS
11.0.734 release and the JAWS 11.0.746 posting. All enhancements since the
initial public beta release are included in this release.

* This release resolves an issue with new Windows 7 installations
where JAWS would request that you install the mirror driver after using
applications such as iTunes 9.0.2 or Roxio Creator 2010. This has now been
resolved for JAWS 11. If you experience this issue with JAWS 10 or MAGic 11
with Windows 7, download the 64- or 32-bit Video Intercept
http://www.freedomscientific.com/downloads/jaws/JAWS-whats-new.asp#Vide
oIntercept as described earlier on this page.

The following lookup sources have been added to the JAWS Research It
feature. Remember that you can quickly access lookup sources using the
INSERT+SPACEBAR, R keystroke.

* Amazon Product Search: Displays search results from
Amazon.com(r) for the word or item entered in the edit field. Results appear
as links followed by price and shipping information.
* Bookshare(tm) Book Search: Displays search results from
Bookshare.org based on an author's name, a book's ISBN number, or words
found in a book title or book description. If a match is found, the result
appears as a link containing the author, title, and copyright date.
* Health Search on WebMD: Provides search results from the Web
site WebMD(r) for the words entered in the lookup edit field or located at
the current cursor position in a document or Web page. If a match is found,
results appear as links followed by a brief synopsis.
* Stock Quotes: Displays current and up to 52-week historical
financial information for the stock symbol entered in the edit field or
selected from a document, spreadsheet, or Web page.
* Time Search: Displays the current time and time zone for any
location typed into the edit field. Note: Be specific when entering a
location since one name may represent multiple cities. For example, if you
only type London into the edit field, you will receive time results for
London, England, U.K., London, Ontario, Canada, and London, Arkansas, U.S.A.

* UPS Tracking: Returns progress and delivery status information
for a valid UPS(tm) tracking number.
* People Search: Allows you to search for individuals using their
first and last name, street name (optional), and location. Use semicolons to
separate search terms, for example, John Smith; Main Street; St. Petersburg,
Florida. Always use a comma to separate the city and state or province
location. Note: Currently, the results that appear in the Virtual Viewer are
limited to the first 10 items provided by the Web site 411.com. This site
only displays 10 items per page. If the individual does not appear in your
initial search results, try refining your search input by including a street
name.

Yes Waqas,

It could help to rather open the pdf file with k1000, which will then OCR
and read it.

If it is a scanned pdf file, jaws will in any event not be able to read it,
without converting it to text, for which you will need a scanning program.

If it is a pdf file, not created from graphics, you could open it with any
of the later jaws versions and read it with jaws in the adobe pdf program.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Serious problems when reading .txt files

2009-12-07 Thread Stewart A Overbey Jr.

It sounds like a display issue, it may or may not be related to JAWS.

If it is JAWS related, perhaps you could try reinstalling JAWS using the
repair option.

You might also check your display adapter to make sure it is SVGA. I
had a similar problem only to find out my VGA display adapter was not
sufficient for VISTA or Windows7.

You shouldn't have to change your appearance or scheme settings at all.

Blessings,
Stewart

I am using Jaws 11 with Win 7 64 bit and have been annoyed by the
numerous times it loses focus but today has been unbelievable. It keeps
flipping back to the desktop constantly. In the middle of an email
reply, a game, on the Internet... (oops, just did it again) it keeps
going back to the desktop. It has done it about 6 times when I was on
Facebook, twice when I was in the middle of typing (just did it
again!)I have not been able to accomplish anything on the computer
today. Any ideas why it is
Now it just flipped to the speaker volume dialog for no reason.

Now it just jumped to the start button.
4 times it has lost focus or opened other items in the last couple of
minutes while I was trying to type this email.

Re: [JAWS-Users] reading a scanned pdf file with Jaws

2009-12-07 Thread Dale Leavens
K1000 will not open that file directly because it is a picture of a page of
text. This is always confusing to people. Text which is saved in any sort of
representation of letters is convertible from one type to another because
one way or another each letter, each character is represented by a computer
number but a scanned image is just 1s or 0s representing more or less
shading density in particular places on a screen or paper.

The easiest way to do what you want is to open the file with Adobe Reader.
Then go to the ILE menu of Adobe Reader and select the print option. Select
the Keisyvirtual printer. This will send the image to the scanning function
of K1000 which will open and attempt to recognize the image and translate it
into text and then present it to you.

Hope this is helpful.

Hello all,

We have released the update this afternoon. You should be able to locate
it

now if you use Check for Updates.

The following lookup sources have been added to the JAWS Research It
feature. Remember that you can quickly access lookup sources using the
INSERT+SPACEBAR, R keystroke.

* Amazon Product Search: Displays search results from
Amazon.com(r) for the word or item entered in the edit field. Results
appear

as links followed by price and shipping information.
If a match is
found,

results appear as links followed by a brief synopsis.

Good morning list.

I am presently running Skype 3.80180, think I downloaded it some time last

I have another update message today, wondered about the advantages and
more,

what about scripts. What I have now are scripts for 3.5 and while they do
give pretty good access, Skype remains an awkward programme for the
occasional user as I am.

What ever the case, I am interested in hearing about preferred versions

their appropriate scripts. I suppose Freedom Scientific doesn't follow
Skype
because of the rapid change history, I would guess that Skype is amount
the

most widely used programmes by the blind and if their numbers are accurate

Thanks.

[JAWS-Users] Skype versions prefered with JAWS

2009-12-07 Thread Keith Hinton
Freedom Scientific is specifically supporting, or so it would seem,
Skype 4. However, even with Doug Lee's scripts, I noticed the
following issues.
First: After making sure you are online and physically connected to
the Internet, start up Skype, and configure it.
Even after enableing extended keyboared navigation, and pressing
enteer, you will find that Skype, for whatever reason, doesn't speak
if you use the menu bar key witch is in the vast majority of cases
Alt.
JAWS only speaks, Menu bar. And, Leaveing menu bar.
I have ben forced to memorize (as I refuse to JAWS cursor around in Skype four)
Shortcuts may be helpful, and are as follows.
Note: You can apply this to programs such as VMware workstation as
well, with JAWS (similar situation) speaks activated menus just fine,
but not the menus themselves, so it does pay to really learn
shortcuts) because JAWS cursoring to a menu is limited.
Alt+S, Skype. Alt+C, Contacts. Alt+A (Not sure why) Call menu. Alt+V,
View Menu. Alt+T, Tools Menu. Alt+H, Help Menu.
Try those keystrokes, and let me know.

P.s. I have a laptop computer, and cannot recall what the command is
to read the hotkey for a specific control, and this box doesn't have a
number pad on it.
Thanks.
Regards, --Keith

If you have any other questions, feel free to email me off-list
privately, or contact me on Skype.
To add my name to Skype, do so by adding the following:
skypedude1234
That would usually be spoken as SkypeDude1234, but there you are.

[JAWS-Users] Upcoming update of JAWS 11

2009-12-07 Thread Keith Hinton
This message is intended for Eric specifically, but I'd like anyone
else to jump into this.

I submitted an issue recently with JAWS11 (actually it effects JAWS10)
as well, and the issues appear to only be in 64-bit in particular.
From what I could gather, JAWS 11 when working in the latest release
of Winamp witch I obtain from:
http://www.whitestick.co.uk
has an issue where if you use either of the commands for reading
elapsed time or the track length, no matter what happens, JAWS always
says 0 minutes, 0 seconds.
And will tell you the track length is also 0 minutes, 0 seconds.

The other (also script) specfic issues, is that in some applications
(Windows Live Messenger) and a few others, JAWS does not speak when
using insert A, or any of the text navigation commands that appear to
select text. The speech buffer may just say something like:
Selected. Not a very discriptive message, but the lack of feedback
under 64-bit is a little... upsetting.

I submitted an emial about this to the tech support at Freedom
Scientific, and Grant Douny told me that it had been forwarded to the
JAWS development department.
So I was curious Eric as product manager if you have seen this message yet?
If you haven't, I'd urgently suggest you to either talk to Grant or
whomever you might have to, to see if this is something you could work
into either this update, or a future update in the 11 sycle.
Sincerely,

--Keith

P.s.

Feel free to email me off-list as well, but I figured you would be the
one to inform in a public manner.
Also, I wanted others with 64-bit machines to try some of the above
keystrokes for JAWS, and let me know if they too, (as I expect) report
improper infromation.
I am very sure, (as this has occured on all JAWS 64-bit releases that
I've tested, that it is a scripting issue on Freedom scientific's
part, and not an user-specific error.
Just thought it would be good to make everyone aware at once about this issue.
Though the interesting thing is, I don't see a lot of people using
64-bit versions of JAWS, so thus perhaps this is something that most
people just don't get a chance to test.

Keep up the great work on JAWS, Eric!

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Skype versions prefered with JAWS

Freedom Scientific is specifically supporting, or so it would seem,
Skype 4. However, even with Doug Lee's scripts, I noticed the
following issues.
First: After making sure you are online and physically connected to
the Internet, start up Skype, and configure it.
Even after enableing extended keyboared navigation, and pressing
enteer, you will find that Skype, for whatever reason, doesn't speak
if you use the menu bar key witch is in the vast majority of cases
Alt.
JAWS only speaks, Menu bar. And, Leaveing menu bar.
I have ben forced to memorize (as I refuse to JAWS cursor around in Skype
four)

Thanks.

If you have any other questions, feel free to email me off-list
privately, or contact me on Skype.
To add my name to Skype, do so by adding the following:
skypedude1234
That would usually be spoken as SkypeDude1234, but there you are.

I haven't had any problems with the latest version of skype nor the issue
with the menu.
