Re: [JAWS-Users] Requesting Information on getting a new laptop with Jaws.

2010-07-17 Thread Mobeen Iqbal

Hi Erin.

I may be a little late in replying to your email, as by my time i've
established its now the afternoon and you've probably already got your
self a laptop. But i'll do my best to summarise. In terms of jaws and
the mac, they do not work together. The 3 versions of windows 7, indeed
its confusing, firstly i'd advise you to get the 32 bit version if
that's what you've previously used as that guarantees compatibility with
current programs which is what most users opt for if they're not running
servers or memory intensive applications.

2GB or more of ram and a minimum of a 120 GB hard drive should be more
than enough for your needs.

As for windows7 versions, what versions are they offering in your part
of the world? windows7 home basic is probably not worth going for, go
for windows7 ultimate or windows7 home premium. home premium will be
fine for your needs, home basic would probably do the job as well but to
be on the safe side, get home premium. there aren't many differences,
ultimate offers everything windows7 could ever have offered you, home
premium verses home basic? home basic doesn't offer media center
recording from TV cards, aero affects etc as far as i know? its been so
confusing as microsoft being microsoft couldn't just stick to 1, 2, or
even 3 editions we've got 4 or more versions of the same operating
system to choose from, home basic, home starter, home premium, ultimate,
server, etc. ah well, that's microsoft for you.

Bottom line: go for a laptop. Macs are generally more expensive and i'm
not just saying this because i'm biost towards windows, i'm saying it
because i don't like a company that's arogant and full of them selves
and that don't even let me customise my devices with out a fight! In
regards to your jaws licences, some users have said that your jaws
licence would work on all windows7 versions, i could be wrong in this
regard as i'm not using windows7 yet with the version of jaws i have.
regarding your sound issue, that can probably easily be fixed if we
patch your stereo mix output instead of your microphone input so people
will be able to hear jaws. that's easily done i believe from within
windows7 and i can give you a hand trying to get this feature to work.

I hope this has been of some help to you, if you have any further
questions, drop me a line.

Mo.

Hello,
My name is Erin, and I'm new to the group.
I use Jaws 10 and 11 standard.
I am going tomorrow to get a new laptop.
I've been told that I either have to get seven or a mac. I don't know
if jaws works with either one of them. And if it does do I need jaws
standard or pro.
Also, I saw there were three different versions of seven, and I don't
know what the differences are.
I like to do several things on my computer. Burn and rip cd's,
download music, convert things with GoldWave, join things together,
play games and much more.
I also love to go to chatroom sites and play yahtzy. right now people
can't hear me using my vista laptop. I've been told it's because of my
sound card. However I've tried both speakers and external sound cards.
People still can't hear jaws.

As I said I'm getting a new laptop, and I'm looking for input.
Things like, the size of the harddrive, how much ram, 32 or 64 bit,
operating system, microsoft verses mac, sound card, what version of
jaws, and everything, and anything else, people can advise me with
more information.
i'm going in the morning, sorry for such short notice, but it suddenly
came up.

Thanks for all the help you all can give me.

Just a few comments to consider. I used to tfavor AMD for a long time as
well. They used to provide more bang for the buck! Unfortunately, they
have fallen far behind Intel in processor development and currently are not
even competitive in price or performance. It may eeven be hard to find an
AMD sysyem right now. I hope they catch up soon and provide competition
again. If you are looking for performance, stay away from NetBooks, which
are attractively inexpensive, but have limited performance.

I think most users would prefer Windows 7 Home Premium. Starter has
arbitrary limitations to make it slightly cheaper and Professional and above
editions would require a Pro version of JAWS. Unless you know that you need
one of the few additional features of Professional or Ultimate, stick with
Home Premium. If you are not planning on using more than 4 GB of RAM, there
is no technical reason to get a 64 bit edition of Windows 7. All hardware
available today, except NetBooks, will be 64 bit capable. However, as much
as Microsoft and the retailers push systems with 64 bit Windows 7, not all
software is ready. There are still compatibility issues with some software
and especially hardware drivers. If you have older peripherals, such as an
old printer or scanner, this could be a problem. If you want more than 4 GB
of RAM, you have no choice, 64 bit Windows 7 is required.

Have fun with your new laptop!

So if you want more than 3GB of ram 64-bit is required.
A 32-bit OS will only make use of up to 3GB of ram.

this update doesn't have to do with jaws but a daisy book. mainly the tandom
daisy book. it gets downloaded and installed but even doing a check for updates
still brings up the book as if it isn't installed and fs reader shows the book
and you can still play it. that' the real trouble here. a book that is
installed but according to check for updates, it isn't. hope this explains the

[JAWS-Users] uac in windows 7

2010-07-17 Thread Graham Smith

   Hi

Using latest jaws, windows 7 64 bit

I am playing a couple of card games that will not run with the uac enabled.

I notice that it appears I only have four options on the slider bar: 100, 66
default. 33. and 0 percent. Should I not be able to adjust this by single
percent incremebts with the arrow keys?

I was wondering if I could lower the setting until the games worked, they
will not work on the 33 percent option.

Bit of a nuisance because a restart is required everytime I select the 0
percent option to play the game.

Any ideas how I can get over this problem

Dont particulary want to leave uac off.

Graham

I found what might be a working solution to this issue with Jaws not reading
certain messages in Windows Live.
I have tried this several times and it does seem to work.

1. In the view Option, go down to Layout and make sure the Reading Pane is
checked.
2. There are options for placing it either at the bottom or to the right of
the message. Choose the bottom option.
3. If you encounter a message that won't read, activate the Jaws cursor.
There may be a lot of other information in the page that we don't usually
hear. If you are experiencing that, press the Page Down and you can read
the message. It's annoying but it does work.

Re: [JAWS-Users] WINDOWS LIVE MAIL, SILENT MESSAGES

2010-07-17 Thread wild.flower
Lenny, I read the other day that if JAWS users follow certain steps it will
almost always work.

Personally, I do not like leaving the preview pain on from the layout page
because, it opens every email as you arrow down the list. There are some
emails that, for security reasons, I do not want automatically opened. It's
just a personal preference.

Now, follow these steps and you should have no more problems most of the
time, or at least it has been working for me flawlessly.

Step 1:
press control + home
step 2:
press insert + escape to refresh the page
Step 3:
press control + home

Now you should be able to read your message by using the arrow keys or using
the say all keystroke

Hope this helps,
Gena

Re: [JAWS-Users] WINDOWS LIVE MAIL, SILENT MESSAGES

2010-07-17 Thread John Justice

Mandy,
You can receive that message if another e-mail client such as Outlook is in
your system at the same time. Windows Live may ask to be shown as the
primary e-mail product. That kind of message will occasionally lock you
out of an entire folder. If that happens, the only way around it is to
delete the folder and then re-create it. You may lose content in the
process. For some reason, I'm not sure why, Windows Live Mail doesn't play
happily with other e-mail systems, even Outlook.

Re: [JAWS-Users] WINDOWS LIVE MAIL, SILENT MESSAGES

2010-07-17 Thread Mandy
Yeah I do have Outlook although WLM is my default.

Am I correct, though, that you cannot look at contacts properly nor can you
find folders from their initial letter can you?

Mandy,
You can receive that message if another e-mail client such as Outlook is in
your system at the same time.

I like Windows Live Mail apart from a couple of issues - if a message has
no links I seem to have to tab to read it.
Also sometimes an email will be totally unreadable as I will get an
unknown error has occurred ok and and there's no reason for it that I can
see - I've found if I press shift and delete it gets rid of the message
 which delete alone does not!

Also is there a way of reading addresses or contacts as they call them as
I don't know how to look at how names and addresses are spelt.

 Mandy.

I found what might be a working solution to this issue with Jaws not
 reading
 certain messages in Windows Live.
I have tried this several times and it does seem to work.

 1. In the view Option, go down to Layout and make sure the Reading Pane
 is
 checked.
 2. There are options for placing it either at the bottom or to the right
 of
the message. Choose the bottom option.
 3. If you encounter a message that won't read, activate the Jaws cursor.
There may be a lot of other information in the page that we don't usually
hear. If you are experiencing that, press the Page Down and you can read
the message. It's annoying but it does work.

indeed so. I get a message, and when I open it, jaws, says, message contains
one link, and then nothing. Somehow jaws loses focus and FS hasn't found a

I have windows 7, home premium and jaws 11, latest update on a 64 bit

Hello,

Wondered if anyone has been able to successfully use Jaws 11 in Windows XP

compatible with Windows 7?

If so are there any special settings needed in order to successfully use
Jaws in the Windows XP compatible mode in Windows 7?

Thanks.
