Re: [JAWS-Users] The function key

2011-03-25 Thread David
Hello there;

It's my understanding that,
This setting does not appear in the Windows Mobility Center
On Dell laptops.
So, you will need to change the function key behavior through the,
BIOS,
I believe,
If you restart computer, and press F2key, the bios will load,
If you need further instructions let me no.
Also, you will need sighted assistance for this.

Hello there;

If you go into control panel,
You will land on the search edit,
If you tab one time you may hear,
Small or large icons,
If you press spacebar, up arrow, you will hear, cadigory,
Press enter.
Now, if you tab you should find hardware and sound,
However, there's no setting to change the function key behavior. At least I
haven't found such setting on a dell laptop.
Note, if you change to cadigory within the control panel, you won't be able
to letter navigate, so you will need to change back to large or small icon.

Re: [JAWS-Users] The function key

2011-03-25 Thread Steve

Sarah,

I really think that people are telling you something that doesn't apply on
your HP computer. Here is the info I referenced a couple days ago, and the
link to the HP support site is below that. You'll need somebody to read the
screen when you go into the Bios settings to change this.

Support details
On most HP and Compaq notebook PCs, it is necessary to press and hold the
function key (fn) while pressing one of the f1 through f12 keys to activate
the
default functions; such as, increasing or decreasing the brightness of the
display, the sound volume, sleep, keyboard lock, etc. On the HP Envy
notebooks
and other notebooks with advanced BIOS options, the function keys can be
configured so that it is not necessary to press and hold the fn key.

1 - Function Keys f1 through f12
2 - Configurable Function key fn
Disable fn in the BIOS
To disable, or enable, the function key (fn) in the BIOS, do the following
steps.

list of 6 items
1. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
2. Press the f10 key to open the BIOS setup window.
3. Use the right-arrow or left-arrow keys to navigate to the System
Configuration option.

4. Use the up-arrow or down-arrow keys to navigate to the Action Keys Mode
option, and then press the enter key to display the Enable / Disable menu.

5. Select the desired mode:
list of 2 items nesting level 1
. Disabled : Requires pressing fn key + f1 through f12 to use the action as
indicated on the action key.
For example, if Disabled , pressing fn + f11 will mute the sound as
indicated on the key on this model PC. Alternatively, pressing f11 only will
minimize

and maximize a web browser if open.
The action keys may vary depending on the model of notebook.
. Enabled : Requires pressing only f1 through f12 to use the action as
indicated on the action keys.
For example, if Enabled , pressing f11 only will mute the sound as indicated
on the key on this model PC. Alternatively, pressing fn + f11 will minimize

and maximize a web browser if open.
The action keys may vary depending on the model of notebook.
list end nesting level 1
6. Press f10 key to save the selection and restart the computer.
list end
The function key (fn) option can be reset at any time.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=uslc=endocname=c02035108

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

Hello there;

If you go into control panel,
You will land on the search edit,
If you tab one time you may hear,
Small or large icons,
If you press spacebar, up arrow, you will hear, cadigory,
Press enter.
Now, if you tab you should find hardware and sound,
However, there's no setting to change the function key behavior. At least
I

haven't found such setting on a dell laptop.
Note, if you change to cadigory within the control panel, you won't be
able
to letter navigate, so you will need to change back to large or small
icon.

Sarah,

I really think that people are telling you something that doesn't apply
on your HP computer. Here is the info I referenced a couple days ago,
and the link to the HP support site is below that. You'll need somebody
to read the screen when you go into the Bios settings to change this.

Support details
On most HP and Compaq notebook PCs, it is necessary to press and hold the
function key (fn) while pressing one of the f1 through f12 keys to
activate the
default functions; such as, increasing or decreasing the brightness of
the display, the sound volume, sleep, keyboard lock, etc. On the HP Envy
notebooks
and other notebooks with advanced BIOS options, the function keys can be
configured so that it is not necessary to press and hold the fn key.

1 - Function Keys f1 through f12
2 - Configurable Function key fn
Disable fn in the BIOS
To disable, or enable, the function key (fn) in the BIOS, do the
following steps.

list of 6 items
1. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
2. Press the f10 key to open the BIOS setup window.
3. Use the right-arrow or left-arrow keys to navigate to the System
Configuration option.

4. Use the up-arrow or down-arrow keys to navigate to the Action Keys
Mode option, and then press the enter key to display the Enable / Disable
menu.

5. Select the desired mode:
list of 2 items nesting level 1
. Disabled : Requires pressing fn key + f1 through f12 to use the action
as indicated on the action key.
For example, if Disabled , pressing fn + f11 will mute the sound as
indicated on the key on this model PC. Alternatively, pressing f11 only
will minimize

and maximize a web browser if open.
The action keys may vary depending on the model of notebook.
. Enabled : Requires pressing only f1 through f12 to use the action as
indicated on the action keys.
For example, if Enabled , pressing f11 only will mute the sound as
indicated on the key on this model PC. Alternatively, pressing fn + f11
will minimize

and maximize a web browser if open.
The action keys may vary depending on the model of notebook.
list end nesting level 1
6. Press f10 key to save the selection and restart the computer.
list end
The function key (fn) option can be reset at any time.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=uslc=endocname=c02035108

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

Just a simple question...

Don't you have a keyboard button that can change function keys from
multimedia to normal function keys without going into the BIOS???

Try to play with the keyboard, specially on the upper right side, and
hopefully will find a key that will change the mode to normal function keys.

Best wishes,

But, I guess that seems to be the only way.

Sarah,

I really think that people are telling you something that doesn't apply
on your HP computer. Here is the info I referenced a couple days ago,
and the link to the HP support site is below that. You'll need somebody
to read the screen when you go into the Bios settings to change this.

Support details
On most HP and Compaq notebook PCs, it is necessary to press and hold
the function key (fn) while pressing one of the f1 through f12 keys to
activate the
default functions; such as, increasing or decreasing the brightness of
the display, the sound volume, sleep, keyboard lock, etc. On the HP Envy
notebooks
and other notebooks with advanced BIOS options, the function keys can be
configured so that it is not necessary to press and hold the fn key.

1 - Function Keys f1 through f12
2 - Configurable Function key fn
Disable fn in the BIOS
To disable, or enable, the function key (fn) in the BIOS, do the
following steps.

list of 6 items
1. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
2. Press the f10 key to open the BIOS setup window.
3. Use the right-arrow or left-arrow keys to navigate to the System
Configuration option.

4. Use the up-arrow or down-arrow keys to navigate to the Action Keys
Mode option, and then press the enter key to display the Enable /
Disable menu.

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

adjust common mobility settings but haven't found anything about fn key

Hello there;
As I indicated to you, you will need some sighted assistance to change the
FNKey behavior, since your going in to the BIOS, where there's no speech
available.

If you have sighted help,

Then, try the following;

1. Press F2 button when you see Dell Logo at the start up, You'll enter
into

BIOS.

2. Navigate to Advanced Settings Function Key Behavior.

3. You'll see its default value as MULTIMEDIA KEY FIRST.
4. Change it to FUNCTION KEY FIRST.
5. Save settings by pressing F10, You are done

Now you will need to restart laptop.

Hope this helps.

Hello there;

Hi all,

I just got a new HP 64 bit laptop, with a full keyboard. I purchased

the

full keyboard computer so I wouldn't have to deal with the laptop
configuration. With this new computer though, I need to press the
function
key to use any of the Jaws f key functions. Is there a way to switch

the

default on the function keys so that the function key needs to be

pressed

for the opposite of what it is presently set up to?

For example,, the f12 key is presently default to turn on and off the
internet. In order to read the time I must press, the fn key, the f12

and

the Jaws key. As you can imagine, while trying to do the links list

Jaws

key f7, on the internet this is a feat in dexterity! I want to make

that

the secondary function of the f 12 key and let the Jaws key f12 speak

the

time and date as it did on my old computer.

Is this a possibility? How would one accomplish this task?

Thanks in advance,
Dixie

[JAWS-Users] Interesting information about disc clean up

2011-03-25 Thread Russ Hubley
Hi everyone,

Sometime ago, I wrote a very knowledgeable friend about using disc clean up.
I gave him the following information.

I am running Windows 7, 64 bit. I did a disc clean up. All of the items in
the list were checked.

When I used some programs, I found them a little slower to respond. This was
most noticeable with the program, Openbook, my scanning program. Is this
normal?

His Answer

Sometimes programs are expecting to find their temp files and when you clean
them up it takes time to look for and re create the files. This is how some
programs keep notes about themselves. The newly created file is much
smaller than the one you deleted thus the faster operation after the first
run. As time goes by this file will get bigger and bigger, but you'll clean
it out every once in a while. That way it'll never get big and bloated.

If it seems that the program is not operating quite like how you'd like it
to try excluding it from the disc cleanup.

If anyone has seen this happening, please let me know, especially if you
have any further ideas for me.

Russ
