Re: [JAWS-Users] Low on virtual memory
Ok, with that much free space on the drive. You don't need to change that. Another thing you can look at is what is playing the game for you. This could be media player or possible quick time. They both have buffers for playing content from the Internet. Only media player has all the catches and don't forget to turn off its Internet junk collector. You will see them in the preferences. You don't have to worry about quick time, because it don't garbage collect on what you play like media player does. Also check for tool bars on the browser. Just about everything now has junk installing with it. The last is to watch what is scanning in background when playing this content. Between it and buffing the stream might run you out of ram. This one may or nay not help you. Sense jaws has no garbage collection on its self in ram. opening up programs puts scripts in ram. When those programs close that ram usage is suppose to be reclaimed. What ever fool works there removed it and now it loads up on junk ram scripts. So a ram dumper or killing jaws and restarting is the only way to stop this load up of ram. Daily Tip: Repeater Repeater Your small business is doing well, and you've decided to move to a more expansive locale. Unfortunately, these bigger digs welcome almost everything but your wireless network. If you need your wireless network to cover more territory, buying a repeater is an affordable solution. A repeater essentially acts as the middleman between a wireless access point and any PCs beyond the access point's normal range. Many repeaters are compatible with wireless encryption standards, letting you securely grow your network without worrying about unwanted intruders. Daily Term: line art A graphic created entirely of distinct lines, with no shading. *** Daily Tip: Purge The Dust Even if your business isn't in a dusty area, your computers can still fill up with an amazing amount of dust, hair, and dirt thanks to their intake fans. It will blanket your PCs' parts and act as insulation, preventing hot chips and drives from dissipating heat as they're supposed to. Carefully open your computers and blow out the dust with compressed air every six months or so. While you're at it, buy some filters made expressly for computer fans and sold at PC enthusiast and modder sites. Common sizes are 80mm, 92mm, and possibly 120mm (measured top to bottom or side to side, not corner to corner). Daily Term: power conditioner A power conditioner is similar to a surge suppressor in that it helps protect against power surges. Unlike a surge suppressor, however, a power conditioner can provide extra voltage when the voltage from the outlet falls. In this way, a power conditioner helps provide a smooth flow of current to a system. Re: [JAWS-Users] Low on virtual memory
Hi Doris, Yes, I do have an additional internal drive D. I do not have the luxury of having someone here to help me set up that drive for virtual memory. Your warning is enough for me not to do anything. My computer support is my daughter and she is over 3 hours from here and she is very busy with her job. For that reason, she does not come here very often. I don't know if she can help me over the phone, but for now, I just deal with it as it is. Thanks for your suggestions. I will keep this information should I use my D drive for virtual memory in the future. Unfortunately, the drive already has two partitions with a lot of MP3 files in both partitions and I don't think that I want to repartition it just to have a third one for paging for fear of messing up all my files. In the meantime, I will try to keep my system free of clutter when I listen to the football game on it. I do run CCleaner at least once a week and I was told to go into Internet Explorer and remove all temporary files and history. I will see how it goes when my team plays again on the 15th of October. Again, thanks for your help. I really do appreciate your suggestions. Take care. Lennie At 08:13 PM 10/3/2011, you wrote: Do you have a second internal hd in your box? You can manually set the size of the swap file (virtual memory); the recommended size is 1.5 times the amount of hardware RAM in your system. however, this is a setting you should only takcle if you are comfotable doing so and also know what you are doing. *g* If you set this up wrong, your box might not boot anymore and that's something to be avoided. So maybe you have a computer geeky friend to walk you thru the steps the first time. Once you know your way aroudn the settings and get comfrotable with it, this is not difficult at all and i have manually been configuring my swap file for more than 10 years and going back to win 9x.. If you have a second physical hard drive in your box (an internal not an external drive) you can further speed up your system by putting most of your virtual memory on the second drive, preferably on a partition of its own so the page file does not become fragmented. Again, though, this is something you want to be sure you know what you are doing so that you don't accidentally render your box inoperational. If having the page file on a 2nd drive is not an option, there are utilities out there that will defrag system files - and the page file (virtual menory is such a system file) during bootup as they cannot be accessed and defragged during regular windows operation because they are in use then. There are several good defrag programs available that have the option of defragging system files at bootup. I like open source and free and am using ultradefrag for this . And to get this back on course *g*, Ultradefrag does work quite nicely with jaws. *smile* Before changing settings, though, make sure your computer is running at its best being properly maintained with regular spyware checks, not running unnecessary programs and services in the background, being defragged regularly, etc. and if you do decide to monkey around with your virtual menory settings, be really careful, create a restore point before you do, and preferably have someone walk you thru the steps in the beginning. This said, I monkeyed for myself but I have the luxury of having a fully sighted hubby who saves my butt every now and then when I get in trouble. *g* Good luck and safe computing! Re: [JAWS-Users] Low on virtual memory
Hi Trouble, Thanks for your feedback. I have one question. Where do I turn off the Internet junk collector? I couldn't find the preference in either in Window Media Player or the Internet to do that. Am I missing something? Thanks. Take care. Lennie At 08:32 AM 10/4/2011, you wrote: Ok, with that much free space on the drive. [JAWS-Users] Accomplish Cash Manager
I was told of this accounting software when an accountant I know called Freedom Scientific to ask if QuickBooks is accessible enough with Jaws for my husband and I to use it at our business. The tech said we would not be able to use QuickBooks for everything we would like to do, but gave us the link to download a trial version of Cash Manager. He said FS has had good reports on its accessibility. So I'm wondering if any of you here have used it before. I have the trial version installed and have begun to explore features and accessibility. So far I really like what the program can do and it looks promising. It would be nice to find some others who are experienced users. I have JAWS 12 and Windows XP and using Office 2003. I would like to know if it is possible to get the calendar to read out the actual day too. As at present when looking through my calendar I have no idea what day of the week the 1st of March lands on etc. Can anyone help or give me some tips? Thanks Eric. Sure miss the stock search. And the way the market is going, it would come in handy. smile - Original Message - From: Eric Damery edam...@freedomscientific.com To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Tuesday, October 04, 2011 8:32 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] USA today NFL scores This should be working as expected in the next Public Beta. What you should do is enter on the link you've given. When the page opens, press the alt plus D to get to the address bar. Then hit your end key to get to the end of the address. Then erase the date as little as possible and replace with the current date. Press enter and you should be on the current date for the current scores. Save one of those web pages and then just keep erasing and replacing the date at the address bar.
