The Dectalk Access 32 from Freedom Scientific still works fine today with

2012-01-12 Thread Doris and Chris
I have no way of verifying this but check in yourinstallation folder
of windows LIve Mail 2011 for the name of the program executable. Is it

msimn.exe

this has been the name of the Microsoft Email client from since
before outlookk Express which was introduced origianly with Internet
Explorer 4.0, hwhich came as part of windows 95 OSR2 or was available
as an upgrade to I.e. 3.0.

the above name of the program executable originally was short for
Microsoft Internet Mail and News but was kept the same for Outlook
Express over several versions and, I am guessing, may still be the
name for the current Microsoft Mail client.

This would explain your jaws's getting confused as jaws looks at
the name of the program executable that currently has focus and loads
settings/scripts accordinglyly.

the script files that are loaded then internatally have a way of
determining which version of a program, i.e. Microsoft Word 2003 or
2010, is being used. This allows jaws to know the differences and
interact with the program as needed by the different versions.

If the name of the program program executable is the same as with
Microsoft Internet Mail and News and outlook Express, and, my
guess is, also with windows mail and windows LIve Mail, this to jaws
is the same program but with a different version number. So if jaws
announced outlook Express rather than Windows LIve Mail it got
confused on the version of the program you are using.

Do a

jawskey+escape

to refresh the settings being loaded and you should be good to go.

Now this is hoping I have not produced a lot of baloney and that my
guess is right and makes sense even though I am still in the
prediluvian and we actually still possess a working machine running
win 95 A ... g

Interesting. I know Microsoft has a tendency to become quite confusing
about their program names. I see references to Windows Mail and Windows
Live Hotmail, and I don't really know which program is being referred to to
be honest. I know Vista had a Windows Mail program. I don't know if
Windows Live Hotmail is the same as Windows Live Mail or if it refers to
what I used to think of as just Hotmail a long time ago. Since I am
confused myself, I guess I can understand why my buddy JAWS is too. We'll
just blame it all on Mr. Gates, et al.

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] setting up Dectalk Access 32 in Windows 7

As far as I know, DECTAlk Access not working with jaws is not a vista
and win 7 problem but the driver for it broken in jaws 11 and higher.
If I remember correctly, access 32 no longer worked after jaws 11 beta
1 or 2.

and, yes, FS no longer support Access 32.

somebody on here mentioned a sapi 5 version of DECTAlk that she was
using but which was not an official release. Once this is released, it
should be an option or you can, of course, invest $$$ for a DECTAlk usb.

[JAWS-Users] Defining row and column titles in Excel with Jaws 13

2012-01-12 Thread Barry Preddle
Hi list.

Using Jaws 13 and Microsoft Office 2000 Professional.

When working in Excel I can define row titles that I want Jaws to read by going
to the column containing the relevant row titles and pressing
INSERT+CTRL+ALT+R. Similarly, I can define column titles to be read by Jaws by
going to the relevant row and pressing INSERT+CTRL+ALT+C.

However, these key combinations require somewhat tortuous digital gymnastics.
In Jaws 12 there was an easier way to do these jobs. This was through the
Adjust Jaws Settings dialog box (Insert+V).

Turning now to Jaws 13, The Jaws 13 Help contains the following statement:

(Quote) Defining Row and Column Titles.

Before JAWS can read the titles of cells within a spreadsheet, you must
specify which columns and/or rows contain those titles. To define row titles,
move to the column containing the row titles and press INSERT+CTRL+ALT+R. To
define column titles, move to the row containing the column titles and press
INSERT+CTRL+ALT+C.

Tip: You can also press INSERT+V to use Quick Settings to define row and column
titles. (Unquote)

Contrary to the above Tip, I can't find anything in the Jaws 13 Quick Settings
that enables me to set row and column titles like I could do in the Jaws 12
Adjust Jaws Settings dialog box.

Am I missing something here?

Any help would be appreciated.

Barry Preddle.

Go to the quick setting with insert-v. Tab once to the treeview,
press t twice and you're at the familiar title reading
settings. First, override the whatever it says, then down arrow a
couple of times. It's all there after you tab into the treeview.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Defining row and column titles in Excel with Jaws 13

2012-01-12 Thread Stephan, William S NWK
Barry: I didn't know about the combination command, so thanks for sharing.
My experience with JAWS 13 is that I could indeed find the settings for row
and column, using insert+v but that making a selection did nothing at all.
I've spoken with a few lads at FS, so maybe they can fix this in the next
update. I actually just dump JAWS 13 and load 12 when I know I'm going to be
doing stuff in Excel, which is often.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Adobe empty document?

2012-01-12 Thread Ann Marie Medlar

Hi folks,
A friend posted a magazine that she is working on and asked for feedback on
Facebook and had a button to click if blind or visually impaired. The file
is in PDF format so I downloaded and saved file. I go to folder containing
file which is highlighted press application key and enter on open with adobe
reader x.
Question 1 is this the correct or latest Adobe reader software? If not,
does anyone have link for latest Adobe reader?

When I open file Jaws states empty document.
Question 2 If latest Adobe reader, then why does Adobe state empty message?
What needs to be changed in PDF file to be recognized by Adobe x reader?
I open file in Openbook and scanned file which is 62 pages long. I save it
twice as openbook extension and text extension.
Question 3 Could I have used the new Jaws 13 scanning feature? If so how
would I do this?

Thanks,
Ann

It was a document comprised of scanned images, thus JAWS ordinary sees
it as having no text. the scanning feature of JAWS13 is called
'convenient OCR', which means it's ok for short docs or convenient
scans, previews of a few pages of longer documents. -

check the document for accessibility. Once open with document. Just
look in the document menu got tools menu for the accessibility check.
If it says no than not much to do except the OCR rout.
