[JAWS-Users] List Guidelines Reminder
Hello and welcome to the JAWS Users list. This list has been created for The purpose of discussing all aspects of the JAWS for Windows screen reader Program. So everything that pertains to JAWS is fair game. Such as asking about what software packages work well with JAWS or how to make them work even better with scripts, keyboard short cuts and so forth. Another example could be requesting information on how to do something in Microsoft Word, which as we all know works very well with JAWS, but you need to know how to do a certain task or want to learn a way to accomplish it more efficiently. Now this is a very important point in my opinion, asking the list for exact instructions every time is not a good thing to do for a major reason. It creates a dependency situation even if you don't realize it does. The ideal place I am hoping the list will arrive at some day is that everybody no matter how new they might happen to be with JAWS or computers will have the confidence to try things on their own, and yet feel if they get stuck the list will be there to help put them back on track. Trust me when I say that help is quicker to arrive for somebody who is well known to ask for it last than first. So try it yourself first what ever it might happen to be. If you get stuck then let the list know what you've done to try and resolve your current dilemma. Then I'm sure help will arrive with in short order. Next a post asking if there is a software package that does a specific task and works well with JAWS is perfectly fine. The rules of conduct are quite simple and straightforward. Be polite and Patient with others. There will be absolutely no fighting, and no bashing of Freedom Scientific on here at all. If you have a problem with them then I suggest you take it up with Freedom Scientific directly. Please try to keep subject lines relevant and descriptive as possible. Also any news letters except those that directly pertain to JAWS should not be posted to the list prior to receiving moderator approval. Attachments are removed before any message is sent to the list. This is done for your protection. The message list might state that there is an attachment but in fact Mailman does remove them. When contacting any of the list moderators privately please be descriptive in the subject line as to the purpose of the message. Many of us simply delete messages from people we don't know. At the present time there are over 550 subscribers to this list, so we can't possibly know everybody on here. Also, if you have a question for the list that falls within the guidelines, then post it accordingly. Don't contact the management team with questions that are more appropriate for the list itself. Your question may or may not receive an answer for a number of reasons. Everybody should familiarize themselves with the content contained in the footer message that accompanies every message posted to the list. There you will find the group web address along with some other relevant information pertaining to contacting the management team ETC. Occasionally there might be some difficulty with your email address and you may receive an email from the Mailman program asking you to reactivate your account. Please do not simply delete this message. Instead open it and follow the directions to reactivate your account. If you do not after receiving a number of such messages then we will figure that you no longer wish to be a member of the list and remove your email address. The discussion of anything illegal is absolutely forbidden, along with flirting or other such inappropriate activities. this is not a high tech swap shop or anything of that nature at all. This means that goods and or services will not be bought or sold using this forum. If you know a given subject is off topic then don't post it. Simply placing off topic in the subject line does not make it all right. Cross-posting is not permitted, and members should only post in the following manner: Using the TO: field with only one list address. The SUBJECT: field should be short and to the point without including any member names. The reason for this is that in cases where people setup their message rules to go by the To: field often times such rules get fowled up and in effect do not work properly. Also cross posting might allow you to reach many lists at the same time but the fact is such a post might not be on topic for each and every list. This practice does nothing but clutter up such lists with unwanted off topic messages along with annoying the list moderators. Lastly please no jokes, virus warnings, recipes, safety tips, or pleas to help dying kids, should ever be forwarded to the list. Forwarded messages and attachments are not permitted. If you have an article or message of interest which relates to the nature of this list send it to the list owner and if it is appropriate, it will be posted to the list. Additionally

hello; one way you can do this is; 1, press ctrl+shift+b=address book, 2, now tab to the list of contacts. 3, most likely you will need to tab until you hear, more columns checked, now use the up arrow key you will hear, name only checked. now, try tabbing a couple of times you should now land into the list of contacts. if your sending a message to a person whose name is in your contact list, example, david, you could, 1, create new message, 2, type in david, 3, press ctrl+k, a list of all the david's in your contacts will come up, just arrow to the one you want, press enter. now the correct name/email is in the to field. you can varify this by using the up or down arrow key. you can also, create new message, now press alt+. this will bring up the contacts list. sending email using address book. 1, open outlook 2013. 2, once outlook loads; press, ctrl+shift+b 3, you'll land into a search field, tab once, you'll land into a list of your contacts. 4, now using the up or down arrow keys, choose a contact, do not press enter, 5, press the keystroke, ctrl+n your now being placed into the subjectline of the message, since the address field has already been completed by the computer outlook program. so type your subject, tab to the body of message, type your message, now send, alt+s. let me know if this works. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Judy Sent: Sunday, June 30, 2013 1:18 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] question about contacts When I go to send an email, after pressing Control N, I can hit the first letter of the name of the person to bring it up. [JAWS-Users] RES: JAWS 14 with PowerBraille 40
Hello JH If you want to do it only for a particular application, you can open that application, press insert+6 on number row, and then tab until the search box and then type the portion of the name of the option that you want to set, e.g. Panning mode. Then arrow down and you will find the results of your search. When you find the desired setting, press spacebar to change this or open a dialog box regarding this setting. In this case, that you don't remember the entire name of the option, it will help a lot. In many times I don't remember the full name of options but as I remember a part of this, I can find it easily. I hope that it help you. Kind regards, Paulo H. Additionally I'm running a 64-bit version of Windows 7. In older versions of JAWS, I had some ability to control the point at which characters on the display began to slide leftward out of view as new characters were added to the end of a line, and this also had an effect on where words broke before the 40th cell on the display. I believe this was accomplish through an advanced setting called something like "Panning Mode." I found this feature valuable as I do a lot of editing in Notepad and wouldn't care if words didn't break at all as I move the display window to the right. But so far I've not been able to locate an equivalent feature In JAWS 14 menus. Can someone tell me where to locate the "Panning Mode" or an equivalent, or if there's another way to accomplish what I want. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! [JAWS-Users] Trying To Recover from computer destruction
On June 9, my computer was completely destroyed vy a viscious worm which entered it when I attempted to watch a video of Glenn Greenwald interviewing Edward Snowden. Everything was so damaged that Carlos H, who is the sighted person who cares for my computer, had to completely wipe clean the hard drive and re-install everything, including Windows 7. I am now attempting, with great difficulty, to get things to work so I can do the really minimal things that an old lady like me, does with the computer. I have Windows 7, Jaws 13, and I E 9. I now have Office 2007 which means a whole other bunch of questions but first: I have a few initial questions that someone may be able to comment on. I must add, that I use Magic, at an extremely high magnification, 21, to supplement Jaws. Many of my emails and the Library at Audible.com, look different than they did, and some are difficult or impossible to access. One example is, I get news updates from the New York Times. The format usually is a headline, a short summary, and then a link. It is now saying it is in a table and I can't read it, not even if I go into table mode. This has occurred with several emails which usually consist of headlines, followed by summaries and then links. In one of these emails, Reader Supported news, Jaws keeps repeating the same thing over and over again and won't read line by line of the content with insert 2. It will read if I move word by word with control arrow. Another problem, I tried to download the Humanware Companion Software which I had before. I found the link, pressed enter on it, and nothing happened. Is there something that I should ask Carlos to fix that relates to how things are displayed? Can anyone suggest why the companion software might not be downloading? Miriam For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

JH P.S., Getting a newer braille display isn't currently an option, especially since I have the old PB40 running tickity boo after a tune-up from the folks at FS. Re: [JAWS-Users] Problem with Outlook Express 6
Does his machine give a ding or error sound when he presses those keys? If so, then there is something wrong with outlook Express there. . The following is very basic, and may seem too basic, but so as not to overlook the obvious: What happens if he presses just the alt key by itself, from the message list. Focus should then be on "file menu". Then use right - and left-arrow which should bring up the top of the Edit; View; message; tools; and help, menus. Does he have JAWS completely unloaded when using NVDA? So If he presses ALT+F the program does not get the focus to the File menu end does not open it. This problem exists only in OE and this symptom is not JAWS specific. It happens with NVDA, too. Re: [JAWS-Users] Dragging & Dropping
Mike, Invoke JAWSKey+1, and then press the relevant keys first once, to hear what is said, and then twice quickly. Note mention that the JAWS cursor "must be pointing to the object to be dragged". that is not always a given. You can't just drag and drop items from one folder to another: they (the folders) have to be visible to each other (as I understand or misunderstand it). So, if you didn't already, route JAWS to PC, and then... if you wanna... try again! LOL. I much rather cut-and-paste. Now, if you would like to add a refinement to the torture, beforehand turn on "the JAWS cursor will follow the PC cursor" by pressing ctrl+Insert+NumPadMinus: Pressing those keys a second time will turn that off, which is the normal or default mode. (Else, leaving that setting on will drive one abnormal.) - Original Message - From: "Mike B." Hi Flor, I've tried focusing on the file with the Jaws cursor & I don't know just how many diferent keystroke options. I tried having both the source & destination folders open in their own windows as well as in the same window & get the same message. *The object to be dragged cannot be found. It may be covered by another window, Drag & Drop has been cancelled.* The hell with drag & drop! Re: [JAWS-Users] Battery Meter for Laptop
Actually the fact is simply that your system is configured to display that icon in your system tray and it will continue to do that until you disable that particular setting. In short you have to tell it to stop doing that or it will just keep on as always. Re: [JAWS-Users] Trying To Recover from computer destruction
I don't use screen magnification. But, have you ever tried just using Jaws without the screen magnification. Jaws might read better without the screen magnification on to distract it? - Original Message - From: "Miriam Vieni" To: "jaws users list" Sent: Monday, July 01, 2013 2:00 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Trying To Recover from computer destruction On June 9, my computer was completely destroyed vy a viscious worm which entered it when I attempted to watch a video of Glenn Greenwald interviewing Edward Snowden. Hello; I am running W7 pro 64 bit, Jaws 13, and Outlook 2003. When I use Control + shift + B I get a list of 6 addresses. The number is small because I am recovering from a major crash. When I use Control + Y then C I get the same 6 addresses plus 2 more. When I open a new message and start typing into the To field I get addresses that are in neither of the other lists.
