[JAWS-Users] windows 8

2014-11-28 Thread anna vimini

hi,
I do not think their is a way to get windows 8 to look like windows seven.
but I could be wrong .
all you have to do to find all the programs that are installed on your
computer is open the start screen by pressing the windows key and use
your right arrow to move the nurser to find all the programs on your
computer or just start typing a program that is on the computer in the
search box. or you can go to the desk top and find the list of programs
their.

to do this just press windows m and it should take you to the desk top.
I hope this helps.
[JAWS-Users] Windows 8!
Hi All,

I have just purchased a new computer with Windows 8 and I have installed
JAWS 16. I am shocked by the differences in Windows 8. The question I have
is:

Is there a way to make Windows 8 look like 7?

In addition, I am having a problem in Internet Explorer. The alt key doesn't
seem to work to get to the menu bar. The alt-d button works.

One more thing, it seems that the help material is not really for Windows 8.
Is there a place I can get help on Jaws and Windows 8?

Thank you all so much.

Linda

2014-11-28 Thread david
If you're running Windows 8.1 with Internet Explorer 11 you probably have
realized by now that there are two different versions of IE: one that is a
full-screen Metro app and one that is just a desktop version that we've
always had for years and years.

Normally, if you go to the Start screen, you'll see the Internet Explorer 10
tile, which will load the Metro full-screen version of IE:
if you want to use the desktop version;

1, press the start menu button,
type in internet,
now use the down arrow key and look for internet options,
press enter.
you will be placed on the internet properties general page,
ctrl+tab until you hear;
programs page,

now use the arrow key and choose;
Always in Internet Explorer on the desktop for How you Open Links it's the
third choice.
now tab okay press enter.

hope this helps.

There is a way to add a little Windows 7 to Windows 8. There is a program
called Start8 which gives you back the start menu pretty much.

Hi

There's really no way to make Windows 8 look like a previous version of
Windows. The start menu has been replaced by the start screen. In Windows
8.1, the menus in folders have been replaced by ribbons. As was posted,
with JAWS you want to be running the desktop version of Internet Explorer.
For help with windows 8, go to the Freedom Scientific web site,
www.freedomscientific.com and in the search box type windows 8 with JAWS.
This will bring up several podcasts among other things that cover various
aspects of Windows 8.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 16 DOCUMENT OCR, REPORT AND OBSERVATION

I have worked with the new Jaws 16 Document OCR and found it to be quite
effective. There are some observations I can make in hopes that this might
help some of the list members whom are having trouble with that feature.

I have attached a typical .pdf document. I hope that Mailman won't strip it
out.

1.The new Document OCR works on the type of .pdf document which
cannot be read normally by Jaws. This document is what is sometimes
referred to as an "imaged .pdf document". Rather than an actual copy of the
document in its original form, a photocopy is made which is then
transmitted. For the sighted user, this does not present a problem since
the document is visible when opened. That kind of document can be exported
to an exterior program such as Open Book which then scans the document and
is able to read it. Microsoft Word has a feature which can also convert the
imaged material but it can be difficult to use.

2. When a document like this is opened, the only thing a Jaws user
will hear is "Alert! Empty document" At that point, the new Document OCR
can be very helpful.

1.Press Insert+Spacebar. Wait for the spoken confirmation, then
press the letter D. A spoken confirmation will be heard: "Document OCR
Started." Please note. This process is very slow. Once it has started,
there is no way to tell whether the process is working unless the user tries
to Alt Tab away from that screen. In that event, a message is spoken:
"Document OCR In Progress. Gathering elements."
If anyone would like a copy of it sent to them personally, I will be happy
to do that.
I believe what might be causing the concern expressed by some of the list
members is the silence once the command is engaged and the length of time it
takes to process a document.
This is a five page document describing the condition of a house and
detailing issues that the new owner might encounter. The results aren't
perfect by any means but they are much better than anything OCR has been
able to accomplish up till now. For the record, processing a five page
imaged .pdf takes about two to three minutes. Once the operation is
completed, Jaws begins reading immediately.
MY most sincere compliments to the designers at Freedom Scientific for their
efforts in perfecting this valuable tool.

John my friend, I'm surprised at you. I have never allowed attachments on
any list I manage. I have included on the server for quite a while now the
PDF file that Jonathon demonstrated on the pod cast for folks to try out.

Now as long as we're on the subject I must give praise and this is something
I do not often do since quite a lot of the updates in JAWS for the past few
years do not normally apply to my needs, granted I'm probably in the
minority on that point.

All this year I have tried to get my bank to create accessible PDF files
without any luck. Just a few minutes ago I downloaded my credit card
statement and ran the OCR feature new in 16. I must give my Steelers hat a
tip to FS because finally I can read the thing without running the risk of
breaking my desk in the process.

For my needs 16 has hit it out of the park.

No that would not have worked because the screen was totally blank as if

2014-11-28 Thread Brian Lee
Hello,

Here are three different methods you can try and hopefully one of them works
for you.

Below are the steps that should work in Word 2010:

Method 1:

1. When in Word 2010 press Alt+F to enter the backstage view.

2. Use down arrow key to the Open tab.

3. Use Shift+Tab and if you find a "Recover unsaved documents" button
use spacebar. If that button isn't showing tab until you find the Recent
tab and use spacebar. Use Shift+Tab from that point and see if there is a
"Recover unsaved documents" button. If so then press spacebar.

4. Use Shift+Tab until you are in a list of unsaved files.

5. Use up or down arrow key to the file you want and press enter key.
Each file in the list should have a .ASD extension.

6. If the unsaved file opens in the Reading Layout mode use CTRL+Alt+P
to switch to print view.

7. If you use F6 you should find a pane that tells you the file is a
recovered document and if you use right arrow key you should find a Save As
button. Use spacebar on that button to bring up the Save As dialog box. If
the pane doesn't show then use F12 in the document and save the file.

Method 2:

1. When in a Word document press Alt+F and then use up or down arrow
key until you find the Info tab.

2. Tab to the "Manage versions" button and press spacebar.

3. Press spacebar on "Recover unsaved documents."

4. Use shift+tab a couple times to find a list of unsaved documents if
there are any listed in the open folder. You might need to tab to the Files
of Type box and set it to All files. If no documents are shown in the
current folder you might need to browse to the folder containing the .ASD
file.

5. use up and down arrow keys to select the file to open and press
enter on your choice.

6. Save the file as a Word document. Press F12 to get the Save As
dialog box, name your file, tab to the files of type and choose the Word
document .DOCX type.

Method 3:

1.Perform a search of your computer for all files using *.ASD as
your search term.

2. Find the location of the file if it appears as a result of the
search. You can use your up or down arrow key to move on to the file, press
the application key, use up arrow key to the properties choice and press
enter key. Use tab key in the properties to the location box and make note
of the location. If no location is found by using tab key then route JAWS
to PC and use up or down arrow key until you find the location box to hear
the location of the file.

3. Open Word.

4. Set files of type to All files.

5. Browse to the location of the ASD file and use the enter key on the
name of the file to open it.

6. Save the file by using function key 12. Make sure the files of
type shows Word document (.docx).

I hope one of these methods works for you.

Take care.

Hi,

If, you did not change anything at all in the document and you close it,
it's already been save from before.

So, jaws will not ask you, if you want to save the document.

Somehow an important document closed, but it never asked me to save it. I
cannot remember the file name, but I hope it is still living somewhere. I
think it is and that there was a process to accomplish this operation.

Thanks for all help and I hope this never happens again!

I am certain turning off the computer using the "hard boot" can cause
damage over time. At it used to happen that way. I think the better way is
to find a solution. Have you tried calling Freedom Scientific or the
Microsoft Help Line?

What happens if you turn it off and then reboot it? I would think that would
work to get it out of sleep mode.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows 8!

2014-11-28 Thread Mike Boyd

The best you can do with Windows 8 is to install a third party start menu
such as Classic Shell, or Start 8. Both can be found through a web search.
Classic Shell is Free, Start 8 is not. I didn't read, but if you are running
Windows 8.1, it can be set to boot directly to your desktop, bypassing the
start screen all together. I have attached a file explaining exactly how to
do this for your convenience.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Windows 8!

Linda

Re: [JAWS-Users] Retrieving an unsaved docx in Word 2010

2014-11-28 Thread Mike Boyd

Hi liuda,

If the document had never been saved before, then I am afraid that it is
gone forever. This means a document which you created, not say a document
that you downloaded, or was an attachment in an email. As, I am sure you
already know, the best practice is to save a document with its intended name
when first starting to create it. This way, only your revisions should be
lost. Office does say these days, however, "If you choose not to save this
document, a copy of it will be available temporarily." But, I am not sure
where this document is saved to, nor for how long it is saved. Good luck.

Re: [JAWS-Users] sleep mode

2014-11-28 Thread Mike Boyd

Hi Anna,

I was having this very same problem. I could not find anyway to keep my
computer from, what seemed like, Passing out on me when I left it unattended
for a short while. I had all of the Power Settings set to not let it do
this. Then, one day when speaking to Microsoft Accessiblity Support, I
thought to ask them about this problem. The technician took a look for me,
and although he did not tell me what he had done, he did say that there was
another place where the setting had to be changed. He did this, and my
computer has not done this since that time. So, my suggestion is to call
them at 800-936-5900, and explain to them what is happening.

Hi,
Follow the power settings link, to screen saver, to the computer sleep
settings.
Just follow the prompts from the windows-search box edit.
