[JAWS-Users] Helping moderators with bounces.

2016-01-29 Thread Neil Towery
Hello Gang:

From what I have learned over the past few days, we can help the
moderators, and not have their in box smoking. David has said it is nothing
that we, personally, are doing incorrectly. So, let's not bother them.

This is what I propose as a solution, when you get a bounce noticed from the
list:

1. When you get a bounce notice, don't reply to the message possibility.
Arrow down, and strike enter on the link that is something like
"presubscribe."

 2. It takes you to a web page. On this web page all you have to do is
strike enter on the button to re-subscribe.

3. According to David's instructions, and the message you hear after
selecting the button, you get back on the list to receive messages, and we
do not bother them.

4. If these instructions are incorrect, would one of the moderators please
clarify these instructions. Help us make it easy for you.

 Thanks. Neil Towery

Re: [JAWS-Users] Get Windows 10 is back!

2016-01-29 Thread Tom Behler
Hi, all:

I had some extra time this morning, so I downloaded, installed, and ran the
GWX control panel program for getting rid of the nagging "get windows 10"
message on this computer. And, I think it worked. Sure hope those aren't
famous last words! (grin)

Anyway, I appreciate everyone's patience as I have addressed this issue.

I do plan to upgrade to Windows 10 here at some point (probably this
summer), but would like the option and the timing of it to be under my
control.

Hello, everyone.

Well, it looks like the hour that the Microsoft Accessibility Hotline
technician spent the other day trying to remove the "get windows 10" popup
removed from my computer was ultimately unsuccessful.

The thing is back!

Looks like it's time once again to call the Hotline, and have them try
again!

I find this to be absolutely ridiculous!

Hi,
I am so happy that I could help. When I experienced the joy of using Chrome,
I wanted others to know how great it works. It pains me that FS is telling
people that will not be accessible for another two years. You are right that
some of the choices in the Google menu are sub menus, but JAWS does not tell
you. Book Marks is a great example of a sub menu that you have to press the
right arrow on to open it. If you or anyone else has any questions, please
ask me at any time.

Hi David,

Well it was your post that encouraged me to give Chrome a try and I'm
glad I did.

Yes, JAWS 17 seems to work a whole lot better with it than with
FireFox and Internet Explorer. Much much faster. Haven't experienced
one single crash or bog down of speech output using it either.

I did notice that JAWS doesn't inform you when navigating down the
Chrome menu that a sub menu is attached to some choices. Hopefully a
future release of JAWS 17 will address that. Even the Ad Block
extension for Chrome is much more effective then the one I was using
for FireFox.

For the first time I'm going to take the time to learn every single
JAWS 17 and Google Chrome shortcut key for getting the most out of
this browser. Thanks again for suggesting this to the list.

Re: [JAWS-Users] The latest Jaws 17 and the Latest w-10 update

2016-01-29 Thread David Bailes
Hi Jim,
thanks for the warning and for informing freedom scientific. Hopefully they'll
fix this really quickly.

I checked the settings app on my computer using the latest version of jaws and
found the following:
1. Most of the toggle switches read correctly, but some didn't, including the
one you gave as an example.
2. When the toggle switch was read incorrectly: if the toggle switch was in
fact off, it was read as on; if the toggle switch was in fact on, then it's
state was not read.
3. The toggle switches which were read incorrectly, are as follows:
a. In system, notifications & actions, all the toggle switches in the show
notifications from these apps section.
b. In Privacy. In any of the categories on that page where there are a series
of toggle switches for specific apps, for example, choose apps that can use
your location.
c. In Update & security, backup. The Automatically backup my files toggle
switch. The misreading of this switch is very unfortunate.

David.

original message:
Good afternoon Jaws Users group.
Urgent warning!
The following is a copy of the email I sent to F S support.
If any of you still have Jaws 16 and the Latest Jaws 17 installed on your w-10
computer, with the latest w-10 update of yesterday or today, depending when
your computer updated to it.
Please call or email Freedom Scientific if you can verify what I have proven on
three different computers running the latest Jaws 17 update and running the
latest w-10 update.
Email:

supp...@freedomscientific.com

Here is my message to them explaining the problem:
Dear Freedom Scientific.

This email concerns the latest version of Jaws, 17.0.1377, and the latest
update to w-10 of yesterday, January 27, 2016.

When in the settings area of w-10, Jaws 17 reads the status of all the buttons
incorrectly, weather they are on/off.

For example, Windows key+I, for settings.

Press enter on Privacy.

Down arrow to, Background Apps, press enter.

Tab two times to, Alarms and clock.

Jaws 16, says, just button, which means it’s off.

Jaws 17, says, Toggle switch on.

This is only one example, Jaws reads all the buttons in the setting area of
w-10 wrong, it gives the opposite of what the buttons are actually set to.

Yes, I have proven this myself with sited verification, on three different
computers running the Latest Jaws 17 and running the latest w-10 update of
yesterday.

I called your technical support line and showed them.

They did not believe me at first.

I had to do a Jaws tandem to show them what was going on.

I also had a partially sited Jaws user of w-10 on the three way phone call with
them for verification.

Even running Jaws 17 in default mode, I was able to reproduce this problem for
them.

I was able to switch back to Jaws 16 and show them that Jaws 16 just said
button, which means the button is off.

I would then turn Jaws 17 on, and it said, Toggle switch on.

So this is a very important issue, a lot of Jaws users just use Jaws 17 on
their w-10 computers.

After yesterday’s update to w-10, Jaws 17 will read the opposite information to
them while in the settings area of w-10 concerning the status of the buttons,
weather they are on or off.

As you can imagine, this is not a good thing, they will think the button is set
to off, but it is on instead.

I have been a long time user of Jaws, however, I am a little disappointed in
the response of the person from your technical support line.

She was a bit rude, she talked down to me, she did not have, or use a w-10
computer.

I patiently explained to her, that I ran a w-10 and Jaws computer group.

That I would not waist her time or mine by calling in, if I had not already
verified this issue on three different computers with a sited person verifying
What I was hearing.

This is the Jaws claim number she gave me,

Any help with this issue would be appreciated.

It will install a toolbar, though. However, you are prompted whether or not
to enable it the first time you open your browser or, at least, this
happened first time I opened IE 11 after installation. Also, the
installation is absolutely not blind-friendly--I'm a highly experienced JAWS
user and former FS employee and I had to have my sighted wife help me with
the installation because absolutely nothing spoke during that process. Like
I said, I wish I'd never have heard of this program because every time I
open a document--even a single-page document--JAWS stops speaking.

Hi,
Here is my tutorial. It is a Drop Box link, but you do not need Drop Box to
download the tutorial. As soon as you press enter on the link below, you
should be able to save the file to your computer. It is an MP3 file that
lasts about an hour. Enjoy and ask me any questions about Chrome. Here is
the link.

Hi,
Chrome is great when you get used to it. I have a tutorial I did on Chrome
if you want it. To set chrome to open on a certain home page, press alt and
the Google menu will come up. Now, up arrow to settings and press enter. A
web page will open up with many settings you can adjust. Arrow down to start
up and make sure that the third radio button is checked to open with a
certain page. Now, there will be an edit field right below that to enter the
address you would like to have opened every time. I have Google in there,
but you can put any URL. Have a great one and let me know if you would like
the tutorial.

If you simply ignore the message from Mailman the server will remove your
email address from the list after a few days. Honestly it has been such a
long time since I last reviewed those settings I just don't remember them
off hand. Guess I need to do that today sometime.

So far as the earlier instructions are concerned if memory serves they are
correct. FYI simply replying to the mailman message will reactivate your
account as well.

Just keep a very close eye on your computer to make sure that Windows 10
does not get installed surreptitiously. It's bad enough that Microsoft in
general cannot be trusted, but based on your experience, even the agents who
man the special accessibility help line can't be trusted, either.

I just got off of the phone with the Microsoft Accessibility support line.
I can't say that I am as happy as the rest of you have been with the
assistance I received. Before beginning to remote into my computer, he
tried every way possible to convince me to let him install Windows10. Maybe
he just did not understand English well. I finally had to ask to speak to a
supervisor or manager, and he then agreed to do what I was asking.

When he was done, I asked him to review what he had done. He told me that
he hid the Windows10 installation icon. I asked how long will the icon stay
hidden and he said for a few days. I told him that I wanted it removed
completely from my computer and he said that there is no way to do that, and
that I will be happier in a few days if I would call back and have them
install windows10 for me.

So on the positive side , I will not be annoyed by the Windows10 update
window for a few days.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Update On "Get Windows 10" Saga

Hello, everyone.

As I stated earlier, despite my best efforts, the "Get Windows 10" message
re-appeared on my home Windows 7 computer once again late this afternoon.

Admittedly, I did not install the GWX control panel program software that a
few had suggested, because I was a little leary of putting new software on
my computer without really knowing what I was doing.

Anyway, having spent far too many hours on this needlessly-created issue so
far, I decided to call the Microsoft Accessibility Hotline for assistance.

It turns out that somehow, the "get windows 10" message, and associated
files had been installed on my computer in several different locations. It
took the accessibility specialist a full hour to get everything properly
uninstalled and operating as it should.

I couldn't tell for sure, but I even think the accessibility specialist was
getting frustrated at several points.

I used this situation as an opportunity to let her know in no uncertain
terms that Microsoft is not making any friends among blind computer users
who are being harassed repeatedly with the "get windows 10" message, and
that I would hope this could somehow be taken into consideration.

I am sure, as someone else pointed out, this complaint and my situation will
not mean diddley to Microsoft. But, I would urge anyone with this issue to
contact the Accessibility Hotline, rather than trying to go it alone with
only frustration as the end result.

At least, this is my suggestion at this time, based on my recent experience.

Dr. Tom Behler from Michigan
