[JAWS-Users] jaws not starting at startup, win10?

2016-04-08 Thread Adam Morris

Hi all,
Have changed the subject from prior thread.

Ran the repair which was successful.
Jaws still doesn't start at startup.
Have checked the settings, start for this user is always, Jaws speaks at
the login screen as it signs in.

(I don't have a password for my local account).
Have tried comvinations of checking and unchecking the boxes re startup
with the same result.

The shortcut on the desktop is set to run as admin.
What I find strange but maybe normal is if I go to properties to make
the shortcut key it says I need admin permission and by pressing enter
grants it.

Any other ideas on what I can do to get jaws starting at startup?

Re: [JAWS-Users] running a repair, jaws 17, win10?

2016-04-08 Thread Adrian Spratt
The version and release you download for the repair must be the same that
you're running on your system, and it is that release number that you
incorporate into the windows run command line.

Adam, you say you've already downloaded the JAWS file, so that's the one you
copy into your root folder and proceed to follow Ed's transcribed FS
instructions. Two more notes:

1. After you finish entering the command line and press enter, you may find
yourself waiting a pretty long time. But JAWS will be speaking for much of the
process.

2. At one point, I think before the 30% mark, you'll be told that JAWS is
installing a certain file with "sentinel" in the name. Several times in my
experience, the repair process has abruptly ceased soon after. Usually,
starting the process over gets you past this obstacle. It's easy to start over
because the command line will still be in the run window. I think one time I
had to reboot and restart the process to get past this point.

Try running a repair using the instructions.
Download the JAWSR screen reading software version 17.0 update to the root
of the hard drive from one of the links below:

. JAWS 17.0.1806 64-bit English - April 2016

J17.0.1806enu-x86.exe

Once the file is on the root of your hard drive, take the steps below to run
a repair and see if the issue persist.

1.Activate the run dialog "windows key+r"
2.Type in:
c:\J17.0.1806enu-x64.exe /type repair

Hi All,

I just got around to calling FS Tech Support about the issues I am having in
Excel2010 with JAWS not reading the cell contents when using F2, and JAWS
not reading the various drop down lists in the Sort dialog box.

I was told that I am the only one who is experiencing this problem. They
cannot begin to assist me unless I am running the absolute most current
build of JAWS17 and I continue to have the problem. Since I cannot update
JAWS on my work computer, I will make sure my personal computer is fully

When you say that FS has provided "us" with 2 scripts, are you referring to
a specific group of users, or all JAWS users?

So, if the formula is in a buffer, can you edit it?

The List all formulas scares me. The sheet I am working in currently has
over 3000 formulas.

I was not aware of an area above the grid for editing. I'm wondering if I
navigate there with the JAWS cursor and then route PC to JAWS, if I could
then read and edit the entire formula. Is there a command for jumping to
this area?

Yes, it appears that focus is still in the middle of the spreadsheet and not

Fortunately, FS provided us two scripts that should help. List all formulas
shift jaws f and read formula jaws control f2 twice ( once just reads and
twice puts the formula into a buffer. )

Hello all, and hopefully to any FS Staff on list.

Starting with JAWS 16, JAWS was no longer able to read Hidden Text in
Word. I went through the somewhat arduous task of documenting this and
opening a ticket with FS Support. The issue was escalated beyond the
initial evaluation of the problem, but sadly, JAWS still cannot read
hidden text. This is now Version 17.0.1806. I am using Word 2013. This is
very easy for you to reproduce. Simply open Word, type some text, and hide
it. Under Options, indicate that you want hidden text visible. JAWS will
not read it.

I gather this issue is not high on the priority list for FS, as it is not
a sexy or much-used feature. But it does impact me and my ability to use,
in particular, the Duxbury Word template, which depends heavily on the use
of hidden text for braille coding.

I realize I could once again open a Support ticket, but I’m not convinced
that would make much difference in the outcome. I know companies do
communicate with each other. In my humble opinion, it would be easy enough
for FS to obtain a copy of the Duxbury Word template, and open a document
based on that template. The problems would soon be apparent. Perhaps the
problems are with the template, but the template creator says nothing has
changed in that regard for years. The change has been something with JAWS
starting with V16.

I am putting this on a public list in hopes of just that, making my
concern and frustration public. I would appreciate it if you would deal
with this issue.

[JAWS-Users] JAWS reading in Word print envelopes

2016-04-08 Thread George Martinez CPA
I am using Windows 7, Word 2016 and JAWS 17.
I just went in to print an envelope and when I got to the Envelope/Label
window I noted that the return address was blank because I had just
installed a new hard drive and re-installed my Office 365.
So, I typed in my return address and while doing so I suddenly became aware
JAWS was not only reading the keystrokes but would read the line and when I
arrowed up it read ALL lines.
I went back up to the address I had just imported and to my delighted
surprise JAWS read the lines there also.
It looks like FS has finally been able to get this working for us.
Thanks FS.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Lenovo Function Keys

2016-04-08 Thread Mike B
Hi Bob,

Here are some other ways to disable function keys with Lenovo laptops:

Press and hold and the Fn key for about 20 to 30 seconds. There would be a
menu that pops up that asks whether you want to switch back to legacy mode.
Just select the legacy option and you would be back to the old keyboard
F1-F12 function that you always wanted.

You can disable fn key settings as given below:

1) Go to control panel

2) Open keyboard properties

3) Go to on tab "Thinkpad F1-F12 Keys"

4) Select now on legacy option

Hi All,

I just got around to calling FS Tech Support about the issues I am having in
Excel2010 with JAWS not reading the cell contents when using F2, and JAWS

I was told that I am the only one who is experiencing this problem. They

Is there a command for jumping to
this area?

Yes, it appears that focus is still in the middle of the spreadsheet and not
in the editing field above the grid.
Fortunately, FS provided us two scripts that should help. List all formulas
shift jaws f and read formula jaws control f2 twice ( once just reads and
twice puts the formula into a buffer. )

Is there a command for jumping to
this area?

Yes, it appears that focus is still in the middle of the spreadsheet and not
in the editing field above the grid.
Fortunately, FS provided us two scripts that should help. List all formulas
shift jaws f and read formula jaws control f2 twice ( once just reads and
twice puts the formula into a buffer. )

[JAWS-Users] ATTN FS Hidden Text in Word

2016-04-08 Thread Jean Menzies
Hello all, and hopefully to any FS Staff on list.

Starting with JAWS 16, JAWS was no longer able to read Hidden Text in Word. I
went through the somewhat arduous task of documenting this and opening a ticket
with FS Support. The issue was escalated beyond the initial evaluation of the
problem, but sadly, JAWS still cannot read hidden text. This is now Version
17.0.1806. I am using Word 2013. This is very easy for you to reproduce. Simply
open Word, type some text, and hide it. Under Options, indicate that you want
hidden text visible. JAWS will not read it.

I gather this issue is not high on the priority list for FS, as it is not a
sexy or much-used feature. But it does impact me and my ability to use, in
particular, the Duxbury Word template, which depends heavily on the use of
hidden text for braille coding.

I realize I could once again open a Support ticket, but I’m not convinced that
would make much difference in the outcome. I know companies do communicate with
each other. In my humble opinion, it would be easy enough for FS to obtain a
copy of the Duxbury Word template, and open a document based on that template.
The problems would soon be apparent. Perhaps the problems are with the
template, but the template creator says nothing has changed in that regard for
years. The change has been something with JAWS starting with V16.

I am putting this on a public list in hopes of just that, making my concern and
frustration public. I would appreciate it if you would deal with this issue.

Hello JAWS users,

Have you had any experience with JAWS and Windows 10 on a laptop with a touch

touch screen.

If so, how effective do you find the touch interface as supported by JAWS, and
in what circumstances do you prefer to use the touch screen?

This update worked fine for me on both my machines, but I have experienced
this same issue every blue moon over the years. Indeed, updating the

It was stressful the first couple of times I encountered it, but after that,
it became just a random and slightly annoying glitch that's easily fixed. No

For the record, Mike nearly always credits his source. Often his
instructions end with the person's name if he hasn't already mentioned it at
the beginning. But it can be hard to keep track of the sources of the
information we get here on this list and elsewhere. I also try to
acknowledge my sources, but sometimes when I'm compiling and simplifying
notes, the sources get lost. Besides, when a non-techy like me passes along
directions, it's always someone else who did the real work. For example,
while I may have posted a set of scripts, someone else wrote them.
Strangely, it's rare that script authors get credit.

But yes, it's only fair to give credit where credit is due.

2016-04-08 Thread Annette Carr

JAWS on my work computer, I will make sure my personal computer is fully
updated and see if the problem still exists.

For those of you who have stated that you are having the same issues, please
call it into FS.

Annette

When you say that FS has provided "us" with 2 scripts, are you referring to
a specific group of users, or all JAWS users?

So, if the formula is in a buffer, can you edit it?

The List all formulas scares me. The sheet I am working in currently has
over 3000 formulas.

I was not aware of an area above the grid for editing. I'm wondering if I
navigate there with the JAWS cursor and then route PC to JAWS, if I could
then read and edit the entire formula. Is there a command for jumping to
this area?

Yes, it appears that focus is still in the middle of the spreadsheet and not
in the editing field above the grid.
Fortunately, FS provided us two scripts that should help. List all formulas
shift jaws f and read formula jaws control f2 twice ( once just reads and
twice puts the formula into a buffer. )

For the record, Mike nearly always credits his source. Often his
instructions end with the person's name if he hasn't already mentioned
it at the beginning. But it can be hard to keep track of the sources of
the information we get here on this list and elsewhere. I also try to
acknowledge my sources, but sometimes when I'm compiling and simplifying
notes, the sources get lost. Besides, when a non-techy like me passes
along directions, it's always someone else who did the real work. For
example, while I may have posted a set of scripts, someone else wrote
them. Strangely, it's rare that script authors get credit.

But yes, it's only fair to give credit where credit is due.

All,

I know that this is happening for many users who have older ILM keys on their

that fixes the issue.

for JAWS17

I just downloaded the new update for JAWS17, but it's the wrong one. I've
always had JAWS home edition; this one is JAWS PROFESSIONAL. At first, I
thought it would be ok, but when I was told I was operating in demo mode, I
knew it really wasn't what I want. I redownloaded the link and, of course,
the same thing happened, but this time it told me right from the start that
I would be operating in demo mode. How do I get out of this mess? Please,
please somebody help! This demo mode is extremely annoying. All suggestions
will be gratefully appreciated. Thanks.
Jo

You don't have to be crazy to run a list like this, but it does help.

[JAWS-Users] how do I navigate to a specific time using Mp3 Direct Cut or alternative programs suggestions

2016-04-08 Thread a
Hi,

I am using the program MP3 Direct Cut to remove unwanted sections of
MP3's. It saves them without compressing the MP3 file again. The
program is mostly accessible and quick to load.

However, I am unable to work out how I can navigate to a specific time
in a MP3 file. There's a keyboard shortcut (Ctrl + p) that is supposed
to allow you to do this but I can't seem to type anything in the edit
field that appears.

Any help would be appreciated too resolve this or recommendations on
an alternative program.

Thank you
