[JAWS-Users] Installing office sounds without previous versions of word installed on your computer
Good afternoon Jaws Users group. When I refreshed my PC, I decided to leave word 2010 off of my computer for now. But I could not stand to not have any office sounds in outlook 2016 or in word 2016. So after doing some searching and playing around with the below steps, I finally figured out how to get the office sounds working if you are just using the latest Outlook or word without any prior office versions on your computer. Warning, first go to file explorer options, view tab, change to allow hidden folders, tab to the OK button, press enter. Now go and download the office sounds from the Microsoft website. 1. Run sounds.exe - it will give you an error message. Don't click this error message away. Just leave the error message opened on your computer. With the error message still up, go to your AppData folder (HDD:\Users\**Your username**\appdata\local\temp, and search for sounds.msi, and run it with Admin rights. *This is where I was confused for a minute. Go to users/your users name/appdata/local/temp. Press Control+E, for the search edit, type, sounds.msi Now tab until you here the full path of the sound.exe file, press enter. Say yes to users account, the office sounds install dialog will now come up for you. Follow all the prompts, close this window and the open error message window message you left open. *Step two. After this installation completes, go into Office or Word, and disable the option "Provide feedback with sound" if already checked, close your app, reload and re-enable it. If already enabled, just enable it, other words, just press the spacebar, make sure it is checked, tab to OK, press enter. * Follow my directions, I just opened up word 2016 and did the following. 1. Press ALT+F, followed by the letter T, for word options. 2. Go to the advanced tab. 3. Faster to Shift+Tab, and go to, Provide feedback with sound checkbox. 4. I pressed the spacebar to uncheck, and pressed the spacebar to check it again, tab to the OK button, press enter. 5. Now close word 2016, open it again, you should have sounds. 6. This is fantastic, I finally have my sounds back in outlook 2016 and word 2016, with no prior word products installed on my computer. Good luck... Smiles. Re: [JAWS-Users] java and jaws
Hi Adrian, Well, it didn't take me but a couple of hours before I uninstalled Java. After installing it I noticed that accessing websites that I use regularly were loding much slower, & my computer was taking longer to reboot or start. So Revo & I yanked that sucker out by its roots! Now, websites are back to loading normally, & my computer is start & restarting normally as well. Take care. Mike Sent from my iBarstool. Go Dodgers! I've just done a little Google searching and find the following: Most browsers now no longer need or support JAVA. Unfortunately, Internet Explorer still does. Firefox is apparently phasing out Java. Google Chrome doesn't support it, nor does MS Edge. Many online commentators say that if you do need Java for a specific purpose, it should be fine so long as you keep it updated. However, I find Java's update page completely inaccessible. I wish I could remember why I reinstalled Java after years of not needing it. I vaguely recall the absence of Java often made 'submit" buttons impossible for JAWS to locate. Lately, I've been having that problem with several websites even with Java installed. Fortunately, JAWS is able to find these buttons when I switch to Chrome. So, although I haven't made a final decision, I'm leaning toward uninstalling Java from my system. [JAWS-Users] Eloquence, Pauses, and some pronunciation adjustments that I like
Good morning. Oh, the beauties of switching to newer software! some benefits, but also difficulties that I hadn't expected. In Jaws 9, I set the dictionary to give pauses when Jaws encounters dashes. actual words - - replacement word ), ), along with other dashes such as -- - -- but in Jaws 17, I find that my neat little custom rules don't apply anymore. Jaws keeps running through the sentences without any pauses. I have my punctuation set to None; would that have a bearing? Maybe you can help solve this riddle. For the record, here are some of my favorite pronunciation fixes. Maybe they'll help you with some nagging pronounced errors that you keep hearing. I've found that for newer versions of Jaws, if you're going to make dictionary entries with mainly capital letters, you need to check the Case Sensitive box. [JAWS-Users] Jaws, Braille, and Print Newline Indication
Hello to all. Is there a way to force Jaws to handle print newline characters differently? I do a great amount of proofreading using braille, and it's a constant source of annoyance to me that many times, the braille display isn't used to its fullest potential. Many times, the first part of the print line is shown nicely on the display, but the latter part only takes up a very small amount of the cells. Also, lists are repetitive to navigate. For example, when reading this list: IMPRESSION: 1. Asthma. 2. COPD. 3. Chronic back pain. 4. Migraine headaches In that example, I have to press the Next button on the braille display four times in order to get that little bit of information, because Jaws wraps the braille line to the end of the current print line. Does anyone know of any script that I could use to indicate the newline character by a special braille symbol? Or if there are any skilled scripters out there, I'd be happy to pay for such a script. In my above example, let's say that the newline character is indicated on the braille display as "space L with dot 7 space" making the list look like this: IMPRESSION: symbol 1. Asthma. symbol 2. COPD. symbol 3. Chronic back pain. symbol 4. Migraine headaches Any help is greatly appreciated. I use Jaws 9 or 17, depending on the computer I'm running at the time. Re: [JAWS-Users] java and jaws
This is one of those areas for a non-expert like me when I'm confused by the existence of opinions at the extremes. If anyone wants to track the webpages I looked at, here's a link to the google results page that led me to most of them: https://www.google.com/search?site=&source=hp&q=is+orcale%27s+java+safe+as+of+2017%3F&oq=is+orcale%27s+java+safe+as+of+2017%3F&gs_l=hp.3...6571.13768.0.16174.33.31.0.0.0.0.287.3108.12j9j4.25.00...1c.1.64.hp..8.22.2640...0j0i131k1j0i3k1j0i13i30k1j0i8i13i30k1j0i22i30k1j33i21k1j33i160k1.qvCuOBvNod8#spf=1 -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of John M.
