Cant you just pull the OE scripts out of 16 and add them to 18? The scripts themselves arent version specific are they? From what I have read writing scripts is the same no matter what version of Jaws you are running. On 9/22/2017 6:47 PM, Mike B. wrote: Hi Loy, Using Jaws 16 with OE will probably give you your best results because they stripped out all OE scripts with the later versions of Jaws. Re: [JAWS-Users] Strange occurrence turning on the computer
I disagree. There is alot that goes on in the bios and this is specific to each brand. also choices in hardware can make a big difference in how well a system works. Otherwise you would just buy the cheapest one you could find and it would be fine. I have owned Quantex, Gateway,Dell, HP, Asus, Sony, Lanovo, Alienware and built PCs with Asus, Gigabyte, Azroc, Foxcon, MSI, Micro and others I cant remember. They all had quirks and benifits to each. Never liked HP. On 9/22/2017 11:36 AM, Steve wrote: It really has nothing to do with the manufacturer of a laptop. For the most part, a laptop is a laptop; they mainly vary in how the keyboard is layed out. *CONSIDERATIONS* Most manufactuers install a lot of "bloatware" on the laptop. When you got it, did you get rid of all that extra crap? You could start with a program like PC DeCrapifier. Have you made sure you don't have conflicting anti-virus programs running? Again, a lot of manufacturers include trial anti-virus programs. Uninstall them if you're not going to use that particular one; most of them supply McAfee or Symantek. Third, look at your bootup programs. Open the Msconfig program and go to that list. Uncheck things you don't need to necessarily run at start-up. Many programs that you install think they need to run at start-up, it isn't wholely necessary. Example: you don't really need Dropbox or Microsoft Office etc. running at startup. You do, of course, want your anti-virus, various windows services, and of course, Jaws to run. As somebody else mentioned, you can find websites to help you identify programs and/or processes that you can then consider not being necessary. After you make adjustments in your MsConfig file, you need to enable "selective startup" so that only those items you designated will run at start-up. As somebody else mentioned, if you had a dual-boot setup, you will have a delay that they specified so you can choose which operating system you wanted to start with. It may also make a difference if you have a regular disk drive (not a solidstate drive), to clean it (get rid of unnecessary and temporary files), then take a look at the defragmentation report to see if you c ould gain some efficiencies by de-fragging your disk. This won't affect boot-up times, but it will speed up your access. When you shutdown, you could choose to put your laptop in Sleep mode rather than completely shutting it down. This will put your currently open programs and windows into memory, so that when you wake it up, all you need to do is enter your password and you'd be up and running again. And, as a last resort, sometimes you just get so much garbage in the installation of windows and programs, that just doing a clean re-install of windows and restoring your programs and files after that would be an option. To me, it's a pain in the butt, so the slow boot-up times would really have to bother me to do that. - Original Message - From: "cheez" To: Sent: Friday, September 22, 2017 7:56 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Strange occurrence turning on the computer I have the latest version of JAWS. If this is the issue, you can fix it either by removing the extra OS (don't know how to do that on the top of my head), or go to run and type msconfig. On the boot tab of the resulting screen, set the timeout to 5. I wouldn't recommend setting it lower than 2 because it might make it impossible to do certain recovery actions before the boot process starts, and that's not desirable. So the idea here is to get the screen to come up just long enough to be able to tap the right button or what have you, but not long enough to lag the boot process moere than a few seconds. Be careful in msconfig, there are plenty of intricate and interesting ways to break things in there. Don't change anything you're not positive you understand. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS Build Inquiry
Hi Jerry, Let's say that you're running the latest version / build of Jaws 17, which is, J17.0.2729enu-x64. The version is 17, & the build is, .0.2729, the X64 is for a 64 bit system, if it says X86, that would mean it's for a 32 bit system. If you have Jaws running from the system tray press, Jaws key + J, then press the letter, A, to hear the Jaws version / build. Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers! Sent from my iBarstool. Normally when I turn the computer on I wait approximately 10 to 20 seconds and then Jaws will say "Jaws home use" and I'm ready to go. Yesterday, when I turned the computer on after about 5 or 10 seconds Jaws said "Jaws for windows, overlay windows zero, overlay windows zero, overlay windows zero". Then, after another 5 or 10 seconds Jaws said "Jaws home use" and I was ready to go. I've had this computer for almost four months and this has never happened.
