Hi,
Yes. In reality, you're using highest Windows 10 edition, but the license
you've got turns some features on or off. Compared to Pro, Enterprise gives
you more options.

Ah, thanks for that. You always post useful information here. So I guess the
registry entry "Enablecortana" (can't remember the actual entry, but it's
something like that) set to 0 no longer does anything? I noticed it's always
running now and yeah, there doesn't seem anything to be done about it. I
guess it's harmless. Haha

Hi,
Whenever you move away from a universal app, it'll be suspended. A small
piece of the app will continue to run in the background if told to do so. As
for this affecting startup, I don't know for sure.
As for Cortana: until a few years ago, you could disable Cortana altogether.
Now you can't: some found out that if you did disable Cortana from an
earlier Windows 10 release, enabling it in recent releases is hard, and for
some, requiring a system reset. Cortana has become a part of Windows 10 that
cannot be separated easily (at least for majority of users), as it now
powers search experience (including online search capability in Start menu
in Version 1709). These days, Cortana has become more proactive to a point
where it'll offer to save things that might interest you (called
"collections", which will make its debut in 2018).
Cheers,
Joseph

Hey Joseph.

I don't have the problem posted above, but thanks for posting this
explanation anyway. So, I have found this setting about background-running
apps and unchecked the box. Does this mean they will essentially open and
close as standard desktop programmes do? Does this affect apps loaded into
the background at startup? For example, I always see cortana nowadays in my
task manager, even though I do not use it and in fact modified the registry
to disable it.

Hi,
Real reason: they are windows for universal apps. When you close a universal
app (such as Skype UWP, Cortana, Microsoft Store and what not) on Windows
10, they will still run. The technical term for this is called "app
suspension" (introduced in Windows 8.x) where the app window will appear to
have closed but are in fact suspended.
The JAWS window list command (JAWS Key+F10) lists top-level windows on
screen, including windows for universal apps. The "true" ways to close
universal apps are via Task Manager or going to Settings/Privacy/Background
and preventing apps from running in the background.
Also, someone suggested (here or somewhere) to use msconfig. No, this method
won't work on universal apps at all. There will come a time in 2018 where
you can open Settings app to control which apps start on startup, including
universal apps.
Cheers,
Joseph

[JAWS-Users] List Guidelines Reminder

2018-01-01 Thread Moderator
Hello and welcome to the JAWS Users list.
This list has been created for The purpose of discussing all aspects of the
JAWS for Windows screen reader Program.

So everything that pertains to JAWS is fair game. Such as asking about what
software packages work well with JAWS or how to make them work even better
with scripts, keyboard short cuts and so forth. Another example could be
requesting information on how to do something in Microsoft Word, which as we
all
know works very well with JAWS, but you need to know how to do a certain
task or want to learn a way to accomplish it more efficiently.

Now this is a very important point in my opinion, asking the list for exact
instructions every time is not a good thing to do for a major reason. It
creates
a dependency situation even if you don't realize it does. The ideal place I
am hoping the list will arrive at some day is that everybody no matter how
new they might happen to be with JAWS or computers will have the confidence
to try things on their own, and yet feel if they get stuck the list will be
there to help put them back on track. Trust me when I say that help is
quicker to arrive for somebody who is well known to ask for it last than
first.
So try it yourself first whatever it is. If you get stuck then let the list
know what you've done to try and resolve your current dilemma. Then I'm sure
help will arrive with in short order. Next a post asking if there is a
software package that does a specific task and works well with JAWS is
perfectly
fine.

The rules of conduct are quite simple and straightforward. Be polite and
Patient with others. There will be absolutely no fighting, and no bashing of
Freedom
Scientific on here at all. If you have a problem with them then take it up
with Freedom Scientific directly.

Please try to keep subject lines relevant and descriptive as possible.

Signatures and tag lines should not be more than a couple of sentences,
three or four at the most. If you wish to include a tag line, don't make
another
message of it. Placing anything else in there simply increases the bandwidth
required to handle the posted message and make it more work for a person who
wishes to follow the given thread back to review previous messages, as they
have to plow down past an overly long signature. Also please place your
message
above your signature line so as not to force people to read it before they
get to your message.

Also any newsletters except those that directly pertain to JAWS should not
be posted to the list prior to receiving moderator approval.

Attachments are removed before any message is sent to the list. This is done
for your protection. The message list might state that there is an
attachment
but in fact Mailman does remove them.

When contacting any of the list moderators privately please be descriptive
in the subject line as to the purpose of the message. Many of us simply
delete
messages from people we don't know. At the present time there are over 700
subscribers to this list, so we can't possibly know everybody on here.

Also, if you have a question for the list that falls within the guidelines,
then post it accordingly. Don't contact the management team with questions
that are more appropriate for the list itself. Your question may or may not
receive an answer for a number of reasons.

Everybody should familiarize themselves with the content contained in the
footer message that accompanies every message posted to the list.

Occasionally there might be some difficulty with your email address and you
may receive an email from the server asking you to reactivate your account.
Please do not simply delete this message. Instead open it and follow the
directions to reactivate your account. If you do not after receiving a
number
of such messages then the server will remove your email address
automatically.

The discussion of anything illegal is absolutely forbidden, along with
flirting or other such inappropriate activities. This is not a high tech
swap shop
or anything of that nature at all. This means that goods and or services
will not be bought or sold using this forum. If you know a given subject is
off
topic then don't post it. Simply placing off topic in the subject line does
not make it all right.

Posting to a single address IE this list is the preferred acceptable
practice as we do not allow cross posting. That is simply posting to more
than one
list or address in the same message. You can post the same message to
multiple list, but not at the same time.

Now to the matter of replying to a posted message:

The proper practice is to simply hit the reply command in your respective
email client, IE control + R is used quite often in many programs. Replying
to
all, for example control + shift + R in Windows Live Mail will only serve to
get your message flagged by the server for having too many recipients.

Then at that point your message gets held for one of us to accept or discard

IE should automatically prompt you that it is not the default browser when

open alt key to tools, select internet options. alt + tab to advanced tab
to make default you can also do this in windows settings win key + i when

2018-01-01 Thread Robin Frost

Hi,
It's what worked for me here whether it does or doesn't force the
announcement of said message it does put the safely remove hardware option
in the system tray which makes many feel better even if some argue you don't
need to use it any longer. I always do just to be safe.
Note there can also be more than one windows explorer entry so someone might
have to activate or deactivate each to see what it might or might not cause
to appear or disappear. But since these are toggles that's easy enough to
do.

Take good care.

Hi,
Whenever you move away from a universal app, it'll be suspended. A small
piece of the app will continue to run in the background if told to do so. As
for this affecting startup, I don't know for sure.
Cheers,

Real reason: they are windows for universal apps. When you close a universal
app (such as Skype UWP, Cortana, Microsoft Store and what not) on Windows

The JAWS window list command (JAWS Key+F10) lists top-level windows on

Follow these steps to turn off Cortana in Windows 10

It is actually pretty straightforward to disable Cortana, in fact, there
are
two ways to do this task. The first option is by launching Cortana from
the

search bar on the taskbar. Then, from the left pane click the settings
button, and under "Cortana" (the first option) and slide the pill switch

the Off position.

The second option is by launching the Settings app and on Privacy, go to

earlier Windows 10 release, enabling it in recent releases is hard, and
for
some, requiring a system reset. Cortana has become a part of Windows 10
that

cannot be separated easily (at least for majority of users), as it now
powers search experience (including online search capability in Start menu
in Version 1709).

For example, I always see cortana nowadays in
my
task manager, even though I do not use it and in fact modified the

Hi,
Real reason: they are windows for universal apps. When you close a
universal

app (such as Skype UWP, Cortana, Microsoft Store and what not) on Windows
10, they will still run. The technical term for this is called "app
suspension" (introduced in Windows 8.x) where the app window will appear

The JAWS window list command (JAWS Key+F10) lists top-level windows on
screen, including windows for universal apps. The "true" ways to close
universal apps are via Task Manager or going to
Settings/Privacy/Background

and preventing apps from running in the background.

IE should automatically prompt you that it is not the default browser when

open alt key to tools, select internet options. alt + tab to advanced tab

Hey guys.

Indeed, I think I already did this. At least, I think so ... I can't check,
because the setting no longer seems to be there. However, I also modified
the registry to be sure, and that change definitely stuck. I don't think
cortana is actually enabled; it's just still running as a background app,
and as I'm weird about these things and don't really like things running
when they're not needed, it bugs me. I'm the same with my phone, which needs
to be rooted in order to make me happy. :D

Hi Mr. Ed,

Checking / turning on the Windows Explorer option is not what made Jaws
announce the safe to remove message, that only makes the Safe to Remove icon
appear in the system tray, for me anyways. I had to make a sound change in
the Control panel / Sounds link / Sounds page to make Jaws announce / report
the message. This thread started out discussing Jaws not reporting the safe

It either happens with IE or with Outlook 2016. But that's because those
are the 2 windows that I'm usually opening.

Miriam, have you noticed if it's any specific applications/windows that
won't open when you click on a desktop icon? I have a similar computer
configuration to yours, and I also have this problem very occasionally. But
it never happens with most of my icons.

I know for a fact that all my passwords are correct in both my server and in

day and then again I could go for a week or two and never have an issue also
I have had to dis connect my router for a minute and re connect it and it
works well with no issues.
I have also found another problem, sometime my WLM won't send any messages
and what I do there is close the program and re open it and it works
correctly.
I suppose this is caused by Microsoft no longer supporting the program and
because we are using it in windows 10 it may not function in windows

i would check with aol's web site
maybe they have changed there email protocols
many email servers are useing a secured incomeing and outgoing server and this
would have to be changed in the wlm account settings to match what the server

Re: [JAWS-Users] windows sometimes not opening

2018-01-01 Thread Adrian Spratt
Miriam,

Have you ever pinned an application to the taskbar? This allows you to open an
application by pressing the Windows key together with one of the numbers on the
keyboard above the letters. This Windows 7 method of opening applications never
fails me.

Here's an example of how you pin an application to the taskbar. After following
these directions, you should be able to open IE simply by pressing Windows
key+1.

How to put Internet Explorer in the task bar.
1. Go to "all programs" by pressing the Windows key and arrowing up once.
2. Press I until you land on Internet Explorer. Do not press enter.
3. Instead, press the applications key and arrow up more than once. One option
you'll hear is to pin to the start menu. Another is to pin to the taskbar.
Press enter on this last one, pin to taskbar.

That's it. I hope you'll try it. Setting up a taskbar pin for Outlook will take
an extra step, but first see if this works for you with IE.

I've changed the password in both locations and I'm still getting that

I do not use AOL mail exclusively, I only use it to get email notifications

I guess in saying that if that is all I use it for, I suppose it wouldn't
hurt me to just check the mail online.

Re: [JAWS-Users] How to read PC notifications.

2018-01-01 Thread Fernando Gregoire
If they are Windows 10 notifications, you can access those that are saved until
you open them in Action Center by pressing WINDOWS+A, and the temporal ones
with WINDOWS+V.
In case of classic text balloons, with numeric keypad turned off press NUMPAD
SLASH.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] How to read PC notifications.

Hello,

I have a laptop, and sometimes when opening up and lifting the screen, Jaws
will speak certain notifications. Otherwise, I don't know how to access those
when using the computer.

Thanks for your advice.

Judy
