[JAWS-Users] Using Edcast in IE 11 with JAWS

2018-01-18 Thread Bill Tipton
Hi all,
I need to start to use Edcast with JAWS 2018 in IE 11 on Win 7 64 bit and have
had no luck at reading most of the content.
Learn more about Edcast at:
https://www.edcast.com/

I do have access to other browsers, versions of JAWS and Win 10.
If anyone has used Edcast and has some tips for me I would appreciate your help
Thank you.
Bill

Hey Dennis.

No instalation required really. You can just download it from the
sysinternals page, or grab the big zip archive of sysinternals utilities
(which includes autoruns for checking startup items and a lot of other
useful things that are kind of above my level of expertise). Remember to
choose the 64 bit version if you are running 64 bit oS, or some processes
will not show up.

AS for making it the new task manager, it's done within the programme. Just
pick the "replace task manager" item from the options menu. You might still
have to make sure the programme runs as administrator. I'm experimenting
with this now because I noticed it won't let you kill certain processes,
like explorer.exe, whereas the regular task manager does (useful if windows
stops working properly because explorer always automatically restarts after
being killed). Anyway, I think there might be a way to fix that. If you have
problems, go to the path of the programme executable and under the
"compatibility" tab of the properties dialog, check the "run this programme
as administrator" box.

Hm. I'm not sure. I didn't use Windows 7 much, admittedly. I don't really

is supposedly more sophisticated, and, well, a bit more like Process

Ok.
So I just opened up process explorer for the first time in a while, and
despite being quite a bit more detailed, it's a lot faster. I also forgot
that all these utilities are now owned by microsoft, which probably explains
why it's so easy to make it your new task manager. It also should reassure
anyone who might feel weird about replacing a core windows component with
something else. Your ctrl-shift-escape key short-cut will still work, too. I
strongly suggest downloading this and using it instead. I tested the
"replace task manager option on my Windows 10 machine and it works
perfectly. Be aware that there is a 64 and a 32 bit version of process
explorer. The 32 bit version will not show 64 bit applications, though I
have had the 64 bit version crash a few times on my machine -- seems to be
working well now though.

I guess the term nowadays is "portable". The whole idea is that you can just
put it on a flash drive or on any computer and just run it and have it work.
I believe I downloaded the entire pack of sysinternals utilities, and put
them in a folder in my "program files" directory called "sysinternals", and
just run from there. As well as the two pages I linked earlier in the
thread, there is a .chm help file accessible from inside process explorer
with f1.

I imagine it is time to update the version on the server since in fact I
have no idea at all just how far out of date it is at the moment, thanks
Mike.

Hi Adrian,

I've updated 4 Windows 7 computers to the latest VLC program, so I can't
imagine it's because you're running Win 7. Below is a Dropbox download link
for the installer I used, it's 64 bit:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/6pi53byrzdi3fm3/vlc-2.2.8-win64.zip?dl=1

Let me know how it works.
Take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool.

Rick and Mike,

Yes, maximizing the file solved the problem although only after I pressed
escape to get out of some popup or other.

Mike, FYI, my system won't allow me to update beyond VLC 2.6, presumably
because I still have Windows 7.

Hi Adrian,

Have you tried rebooting? Also, have you updated VLC lately? I wouldn't
think updating would be it, but the latest version is, vlc-2.2.8. Is the
file you're playing maximized?

Hi. I used to be able to pause recordings on the VLC Player by pressing the
spacebar. Now I can pause only by going into the menus. Same with other
functions. Any idea why the shortcuts aren't working for me and how I can
bring them back?
