Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws version confusion

2018-01-19 Thread Dave...Oregonian
Gary,

You asked: "...I have installed all updates that jaws has told me about.
also received a jaws 2018 cd. just wondering if the updates I installed
covered that."

No. JAWS 2018, as others have said, is a completely different version from
JAWS 18. You need to install JAWS 2018 from your DVD and then check for
updates before you will be "up to date".

JAWS 2018 is not considered an update to JAWS 18. It's starts all over, and
you need to install it separately from JAWS 18. You can do this with the
2018 disc or by updating from the VFO website. If you install from the CD,
you'll need to update the way you do with JAWS 18, except you'll use the
JAWS 2018 menu system, or else (again) by going to the website

2018-01-19 Thread Roger Newell
JAWS 18 is the major version behind JAWS 2018. You will need to pay
for, or use your SMA to upgrade just as you did from 17 or whatever
previous version you used to 18. To see your build number, go to the
JAWS window and press DOWN ARROW. You will be able to see if there is
a new build of 18 available by going to Help > Check for Updates ...

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Jaws problems with large tables

Hello list,

So, I’ve been having problems with Jaws and large tables. As part of my
business, I work with one vendor that sends out assignments via email to bid
on. Jaws will often get sluggish or pause for a few seconds as I arrow down
the columns and will frequently crash outright. It’s become so much of an
issue that I’ve started to switch to NVDA when receiving one of these
emails. I find myself even having to go into the task manager at times to
kill any JFW processes in order to get Jaws back.

I’m currently on the latest JFW 2018, but these issues were also present in
earlier versions of JFW 2018 as well as JFW 18. I’m using Outlook 2016 on a
Windows 10 desktop. This sluggishness also happens when I access the same
emails on my laptop with the same operating specs.

I use both eloquence with Jaws and NVDA. Again, NVDA seems to handle these
tables fine.

I reached out to Freedom Scientific with my problem and they wrote back
saying that they couldn’t reproduce my issue. So…

I was wondering if others were perhaps having similar problems with tables
and Jaws? I’ll go ahead and paste a sample email I get below.

Any input would be appreciated.

Hi Christóbal.

How much ram do you have on your computer?
Probably it can be a problem, causing to less ram.

I never recomend's a computer running Windows 10, Jaws 2018 and Microsoft
Office, with less than 8 gb ram.
Even with this setup, it sometimes can be a problem, when tables are very
complex in structure, and there is Graphic included.

I had no problem reading your table in the browser, but it is'nt the same as
reading it in MS-Word.

Hope you find a solution for your problem.

Hans Pauli.

[JAWS-Users] Jaws problems with large tables

2018-01-19 Thread Cristóbal

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws version confusion

2018-01-19 Thread Mike B.
Hi Gary Lee,

Jaws 18 & Jaws 2018 are 2 different versions of Jaws, Jaws 2018 being the
most recent of the 2. You said,
What version number should I see if I have the latest jaws 2018 installed?
See where?

Are you trying to determine which version of Jaws you have running?
Take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool.

[JAWS-Users] Amazon.com and screen readers

2018-01-19 Thread Lenny McHugh
I found this to be quite interesting and helpful. The Amazon web site
detects if you are using jaws, probably other screen readers as well. Anyway
when it detects jaws a screen overlay is also displayed giving phone number
contact information for people with disabilities.
The other day I needed to call and asked Karen to bring up the page on her I
pad. She told me that there is no such number. I came upstairs and there it
was. She since did a search and learned that it detects screen readers.
What great customer service.

So far, I think that for some reason, having the programme replace task
manager and activated by the requisite short-cut, is not having it run as
administrator. It does run as administrator when I run the programme from
its folder, causing the usual UAC prompt. Maybe changing the file attributes
would help. I admit I don't fully understand how those work. Not sure why
this is a thing as the programme's publisher is now Microsoft and it should
be a "trusted app".

The best solution I can think of at the moment is to create a short-cut and
run it from your desktop, instead of using the usual task manager keystroke.
If you do this, you can set in the shortcut to always run programme as admin
as well. I know it's not ideal. I've searched around on the web and so far
haven't really come up with much.

Hey Dennis.

No instalation required really. You can just download it from the
sysinternals page, or grab the big zip archive of sysinternals utilities
(which includes autoruns for checking startup items and a lot of other
useful things that are kind of above my level of expertise). Remember to
choose the 64 bit version if you are running 64 bit oS, or some processes
will not show up.

AS for making it the new task manager, it's done within the programme. Just
pick the "replace task manager" item from the options menu. You might still
have to make sure the programme runs as administrator. I'm experimenting
with this now because I noticed it won't let you kill certain processes,
like explorer.exe, whereas the regular task manager does (useful if windows
stops working properly because explorer always automatically restarts after
being killed). Anyway, I think there might be a way to fix that. If you have
problems, go to the path of the programme executable and under the
"compatibility" tab of the properties dialog, check the "run this programme
as administrator" box.

Hello,

I am using Internet Explorer 11. I have popups allowed through tools.
However, when visiting a site with a potential popup, when pressing alt-n,
the message Allow Once comes up, and there is no other choice such as, allow
all. Is there a way to circumvent this message and let popups come up?

Thanks.
