I believe it was actually introduced in 2007 or 2010.

On a side note, Microsoft just published a complete list of accessibility
features in all of their products, and the list is enormous. It's definitely
worth checking out.

It doesn't sound like everybody is reporting this IE issue.

Still, it makes sense to accustom oneself to moving away from IE. I know it has
some decent features, but it's increasingly ineffective and unusable on some
websites. I don't know when security updates for it will stop .. probably not
til 2020 as that's when Windows 7 support ends ... but still.

Firefox 52 ESR is currently the thing to get if you are wanting to use FF and
JAWS. It works without any issues. There has been some difficulty in adapting
JAWS to Firefox Quantum, but they are working on it. You could also use NVDA.
Really, nowadays it makes sense to have both screen-readers on your machine.

I hear you; sometimes I definitely feel the same. The fact that, between,
for example, VFO and Microsoft, half the time when there's some kind of
update you are crossing your fingers hoping something won't be broken
afterwards, is pretty maddening.

The reply above yours from David there says "voiceover on the mac". At first
I kind of scoffed at that. I'm not a mac user and probably never will be.
But here's the thing. As PC users, I think we are given a variety of options
and tools, and that's one of the great things about being a PC users. I used
to access the web through Telnet and a linux shell. The only browser that
would work was lynx and it couldn't display framed webpages properly. It was
a really frustrating experience back then, for sure. Then, finally, we had
Internet Explorer and netscape. Then, internet Explorer, Firefox, and
Chrome. I think the idea of the web being an entirely universal experience
is a nice dream, but still a dream. All you can do is try to make it as
close to a universal experience as you can. That's actually harder and
harder now with the number of connected devices out there. Often, it's
Microsoft that won't play along. I think we'll probably see more and more
people using Chrome, and that's probably a good thing. Just today I had to
get it up and running again and it was nice to be reminded how fast and
robust it really is. Are things complex? Yeah, definitely. But these
browsers aren't so different from one another that we can't adapt. We just
have to know what tool is appropriate for each job. If you're a carpenter,
you probably won't get very far with just a single saw in your arsenal, you
know? And rest assured, even though screen-readers do add a certain amount
of complexity to things, sighted people have to deal with this too. Let's be
glad we aren't system administrators (although maybe you are? I don't
know)that opens a whole new can o' worms, when you've got a network of
computers, all running different software and hardware, and your company
expects you to get them all to play nice with each other.

Now maybe it's just because I have more time on my hands this year than I
used to, but 90% of the time, I enjoy the challenge and adding new tools to
the arsenal, so to speak. The only thing that's really making me nervous
sometimes is Windows 10 updating and screwing around with my settings and
things. *grins*

I agree that it's necessary to have all three browsers installed, but this
increasing complexity is a little nuts. People are suggesting that we should
also have the two screenreaders, JAWS and NVDA, on board, which I do. But
that means we may need to try six combinations before we can access certain
websites. Then there's the question of which version of JAWS will work.

To give an example, a certain website I use is accessible to IE11, but it
moves painfully slowly after the log-in page. Chrome gets to this page right
away, but later there's a critical page on this same website that Chrome
can't even open.

For a while, I was trying to access this website with Firefox, but Firefox
couldn't locate the edit fields for the username and password fields, and so
obviously I couldn't log in. Then, on a whim, I switched from JAWS 2018 and
18, which I already need to alternate between, to JAWS 17. Lo and behold,
the edit fields appeared. After that, Firefox and JAWS 17 seem to move
seamlessly through the entire website.

This is a website that requires logging in to test, which is why I'm not
posting the address.

The amount of time and distraction involved for screenreader users in
working on the Web lately is getting ludicrous. Maybe VFO's efforts to work
with MS on Edge will bring us back to a single universal browser. Until
then, the lives of screenreader users are complicated. My ambition is to
work as fast on a computer as fast as a non-techy sighted user, but all this
browser/screenreader/version number switching is an obstacle to fast,
distraction-free browsing. I can't imagine what it's like for a new
screenreader user.

glad we aren't system administrators (although maybe you are? I don't
know)that opens a whole new can o' worms, when you've got a network of
computers, all running different software and hardware, and your company
expects you to get them all to play nice with each other.

My ambition is to
work as fast on a computer as fast as a non-techy sighted user, but all this
browser/screenreader/version number switching is an obstacle to fast,
distraction

If you are using JAWS 18 and want Australian English voices, you

[JAWS-Users] Issues with JAWS 2018 updated with Excel

2018-02-23 Thread George Martinez Sr.
I updated my JAWS 2018 this morning in Windows 10, 1709.
It helped a lot with some nagging issues in my Outlook 2016.
However, VFO has some work to do in Excel 2016.
I use the export to Excel feature in QuickBooks almost daily and once the
Excel interface comes up JAWS 2018 does not read the Initial radial box
selection until I use INS + 5, also there is a Default button at the bottom
called EXPORT and JAWS does not initially announce it. At least I can press
ALT + X and activate it.
In addition, in Excel when I am combining workbooks into Sheets in one
workbook when I shift tab into the Dialog that names the Open Excel
workbooks I had several files that began with 2018 and 2017 and JAWS read me
"20" on both. Again when I pressed INS + 5 it read me the entire file name
but it should read the entire file name not just the first 2 characters.
In addition, I am on the QuickBooks testing team and JAWS 2018 will not
properly read QuickBooks lists of either memorized Reports or Transactions
in either QuickBooks 2017 or 2018..
On all of the above JAWS 18 does a very nice job.
I just rebooted into JAWS 18 and now am compiling a list for JAWS team.

It is pretty snappy. I was using it earlier today. Things were going great
until I tried to get to a page by manually editing a url. Then, for some
reason, even though everything was up on the screen, JAWS couldn't find
anything. Even the links list, which I hardly ever use, brought up nothing
to click on. Oh wellnothing's perfect. Using Chrome is a pretty cool,
and fast, experience.

Lol, I prefer Chrome. It's snappier than version 52 of Firefox and the
newer versions like 58 don't work with Jaws yet, although they do work with
NVDA.

There was a tutorial that Dave Moore recently posted about how to work with
Chrome; and really, it works well with the newer versions of Jaws like 17
and up.

HI.

My primary browser is Firefox and has been for the last few years. I also
have Chrome on this machine and have used it a little. They both work well,
but I'd still give the edge (hah) to Firefox. I think Chrome support has
gotten really good in JAWS 2018, latest build. I do not have this. The
Firefox interface is a little more like that of iE, so you would probably
find that switch simpler. But really, there's no reason not to have both on
your machine. Keep your options open.

You need to open FsReader and open the attachment from within it. You might be
able to make the attachment open in FsReader by default.
But, I usually save all four attachments to the computer when I use it this way
and open the .xml file using FsReader.

working. Is this something where I have to download the files first only to

Yes, and you can do it in one of two ways: either the first issue of the
paper, or have it email you all updates (i.e. some papers continue posting

The Vocalizer 2.0 system came out along with JAWS 18. You do not need it, no.
But you can certainly get it. Go to the downloads, synthesizers page (you can
reach it from the jAWS help menu I believe) if you want it.

Re: [JAWS-Users] migrating to a different web browser

2018-02-23 Thread JM Casey

They both work
well,

but I'd still give the edge (hah) to Firefox. I think Chrome support has
gotten really good in JAWS 2018, latest build. I do not have this. The
Firefox interface is a little more like that of iE, so you would probably
find that switch simpler. But really, there's no reason not to have both

You need to open FsReader and open the attachment from within it. You might
be able to make the attachment open in FsReader by default.
But, I usually save all four attachments to the computer when I use it this
way and open the .xml file using FsReader.

working. Is this something where I have to download the files first only to

Yes, and you can do it in one of two ways: either the first issue of the

That's due to the fact that Freedom Scientific insists on bundling
FSReader,
its own daisy reader with its installations.

NFB Newsline, when it detects a Jaws screen-reader in use, won't let you
read daisy files in another program except to use FS Reader.

If you want to use your Outlook program to do it, you'll need to unload
Jaws
and use an alternate screen-reader.

some

tips on how to do it?

Background. I've just upgraded from Office 2010 to Office 2016. With
Office 2010, I made a file association between .XM> files and MS Word
in order to read one of the Newsline attachments. Not ideal, but
workable.
But this file association produces nothing readable with Word 2016.

I just re-tried opening the Newsline .OPf attachment with FS Reader 3.0.
This file extension allows me to open files from other sources with FS
Reader; however, still not those from NFB Newsline.

Any ideas?

I use either Chrome or IE 11. I liked Firefox well enough, but kept on

I think Chrome is my favorite, but there are elements on certain sites that
do not show up in Chrome that I can access with ie11, so I am currently
using it pretty much.

Yes, same here, exactly. Well, I have Edge on this machine too, but to be
honest I haven't even really opened it. NVDA's web support is fantastic.
JAWS probably has better Office support. Since I don't have any more JAWS
upgrades on my ILM, I'll very likely end up doing most web-browsing with
nVDA in future unless that changes. It's fine. We have all these tools; the
only thinking stopping us, is time. Granted it can take time to learn a new
piece of software. Luckily the WWW was made to be kind of universal and most
browsers have similar operating principles. And it's not like we haven't had
forewarning. Sure, IE will continue to receive security updates until at
least 2020 (2025 if we're going to be optimistic, even), but we all know the
web itself is going to change a good deal before then, so there's more at
stake than mere security.

Well, if you read my message, you would know that I stated that security
updates will at least continue until 2020. That's two years. Plenty of time
for people to migrate to other applications. So you are right: no need to
panic ... only to take steps to improve the web-browsing experience, which
is already falling by the wayside as far as IE is concerned. Maybe you do
not have trouble using certain websites that you frequent with this browser;
I do, and others do as well, and given that Microsoft is stridently
encouraging people to migrate to Windows 10, and, they suppose, use Edge,
isn't entirely surprising.

J.M. and Others,

There is a real distortion of facts when J.M. Casey stated that Microsoft
Internet Explorer is losing support. This conflating of facts will cause
needless panic by people.

As of January 12, 2016, Microsoft stopped supporting older versions of
Internet Explorer. This means versions below IE11, and so by definition,
anybody with Windows 2000, XP or Vista has lost security updates and
support.

For those running Windows 7, 8.1 and Windows 10, Internet Explorer 11
continues to receive security and other updates, and it will continue to do
so throough the life-cycle for that specific operating system.

2018-02-23 Thread Steve

[JAWS-Users] JAWS-Users] NFB Newsline and JAWS, correction

2018-02-23 Thread Adrian Spratt
Well, I've just determine that downloading just the .OPF file to disc won't
enable it to open with FS Reader. You need to download all four files, and only
then click on the .OPF file.
I'm finding managing attachments in Outlook 2016 much more reliable than I was
used to. First, as with Outlook Express, you can get to the attachments filed
with JAWS key+a. Focus lands on the first attachment in the event there's more
than one. Place focus on any file that interests you and press alt+down arrow
to arrow down through a list of actions.
In this case, one action is to save all attachments. Press enter and follow the
prompts.

If you want to read the publication with a DAISY player, save the .OPF
attachment (in my experience, the fourth attachment) to a folder, then click on
it. The text should open in the player, in my case FS Reader 3.0.

Yes, and you can do it in one of two ways: either the first issue of the paper,
or have it email you all updates (i.e. some papers continue posting articles to
various sections throughout the day).

I use the SD card in my Victor Reader and I am not sure if you can read it
directly from the computer. You could contact NFB Newsline directly to get a
better idea of your options.

Thank you so much. Got them installed on both my windows 7 and 10 boxes, but
I can't for the life of me tell you how I did it. After working on computers
all day and re-installing an operating system at the radio station is
probably not a good day to tackle something new like this with a piece of
software I'm not fond of. I'm not a smart guy, but I've never updated any
software before and lost configuration stuff. My control alt j hot-key to
start Jaws went away but that was an easy fix lol.

It was actually introduced in Office 2010. In Office 2016 Microsoft made it
more visible because an update added a button for quickly opening this in the
Review tab of the ribbon, but the Accessibility Checker is available from
witting the Check for Issues split button of the Info tab on Backstage view (or

I believe it was actually introduced in 2007 or 2010.

On a side note, Microsoft just published a complete list of accessibility
features in all of their products, and the list is enormous. It's definitely
worth checking out.

Re: [JAWS-Users] recovering notepad document?

2018-02-23 Thread JM Casey
Yeah...notepad doesn't save any backups ... not even in temporary files
folders. If you're worried about this happening again, it may be best to
write your important documents in, say, mS Word, which has the ability to
save a backup/recovery file as often as you want, in the background.

You could look into a program called notepad++. It's like a super-notepad
made specifically with developers/programmers in mind, and has a lot of
features and even add-ons. I don't know if it provides this functionality,
offhand, but it might.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Latest Jaws and IE 11

2018-02-23 Thread Adrian Spratt
You might look at JAWS quick settings. I know you're not writing about email,
but you might find answers here. Although JAWS 18 reads certain email messages
fine, JAWS 2018 couldn't until I went through quick settings and unchecked a
few candidates. Now 2018 can read those messages. Why I need to change quick
settings for material that JAWS 18 could handle fine with the default settings
is beyond me, but so be it.

How to reset IE 11:
I would recommend re setting IE. Here are the steps to do that.
1. Open IE
2. Press alt + T for tools menu.
3. Press up arrow once and you should be on options. Press the enter key.
4. Press shift + Tab and you should hear General.
5. Press the right arrow key until you hear advance.
6. Tab until you hear reset button.
7. Press enter on the reset button.
8. A dialog box will come up. Press tab once and you will hear something about
checking this box to delete personal information. Press the spacebar
here to check this check box.
9. Tab twice to the reset button and press the spacebar.
Wait a few minutes then close IE and reopen it. Now it should work like new.
Note: checking the box about removing personal information will not remove your
favorites in IE.

Hello all!
I installed the new JAWS 2018 update on both of my laptops, and many issues
in windows 10 are fixed.

The mail app is almost working perfectly.
I get no repeats of words, and the new message I bring up reads right away.
JAWS works great now, in the One note app. Also, in Edge, JAWS can now list
the form fields, headings, and links. That helps a lot with Edge. You still
cannot select text with the virtual PC cursor in Edge.
JAWS 2018, with this update, works very well in the Windows Defender
security center window. It is very snappy and it reads the information
concerning the scan. I have noticed that action center works much better
with JAWS as well, with this update.

If you have any questions, please ask.
Yes, I almost forgot.
JAWS now works the best in Google Docs in Google Chrome browser. You do not
need to use Firefox anymore to use Google Docs, sheets, and so on.

Google Drive and docs are very snappy with this new update.
Have a great one!

With little to lose, I did a repair on this new version earlier today. The

since doing this, the Windows 10 Mail program is almost working properly.
On occasion I have to unload and reload both JAWS and Windows Mail and, for
some reason, that seems to restore proper behavior on this Dell Desktop of

I would be interested if others with Windows 10 Mail issues find a repair of

Howdy,

To turn off the password prompt thingy try the following:
You can stop being asked about saving passwords with a setting in Tools /
Options. Open Tools / Options and tab once. You are in a list. Then down
arrow to security. If you get stuck moving down, up arrow once, then start
down arrowing again. When you get to security, start tabbing. You will get
to a check box that says remember login information. Uncheck it with the
space bar. There is no ok button. Continue to use Firefox as usual.

Take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool.

I've found, that when asked if you want to save your password, it tells you
to press the spacebar, then press alt plus n.
After doing that, you either press Y or N. That's what I did and do and it
works.
As far as stopping it from asking all the time, I never really checked into
it. Perhaps someone else on this list will know the answer to that.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Baseball season is here

2018-02-23 Thread David Moore
Hi Marie and all!
I use
www.freebaseballradio.com
To listen to all baseball games.
You just enter on the team, then a list of radio stations come up for that
team. Try every station by entering on it until you find one that plays the
game.
You can look up the other team in the game, and find the game on a radio
station for the other team.
It is the same with football:
www.freefootballradio.com
Basketball:
www.freebasketballradio.com
and so on.
I always find a radio station on these web sites to listen to a game on.
Sometimes, you might have to try entering on five or more stations before you
find one that plays the game, but I have never missed a game. If it is on the
radio, you will find a station playing the game on these web sites.

Yeah! and it's not new. I would suspect that VFO has shut the door on IE

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws Latest Update Direct Download Links +What'sNew

2018-02-23 Thread David Moore
Hello all!
I installed the new JAWS 2018 update on both of my laptops, and many issues in
windows 10 are fixed.
The mail app is almost working perfectly.
I get no repeats of words, and the new message I bring up reads right away.
JAWS works great now, in the One note app. Also, in Edge, JAWS can now list the
form fields, headings, and links. That helps a lot with Edge. You still cannot
select text with the virtual PC cursor in Edge.
JAWS 2018, with this update, works very well in the Windows Defender security
center window. It is very snappy and it reads the information concerning the
scan. I have noticed that action center works much better with JAWS as well,
with this update.

Hello Inamuddin, I was hopeful that the latest 2018 update would solve the
Windows Mail troubles as well but was disappointed in the results as noted by
you and others.
With little to lose, I did a repair on this new version earlier today. The
repair took about 4 times longer than the initial successful install but since
doing this, the Windows 10 Mail program is almost working properly. On
occasion I have to unload and reload both JAWS and Windows Mail and, for some
reason, that seems to restore proper behavior on this Dell Desktop of recent
manufacture.
I would be interested if others with Windows 10 Mail issues find a repair of
the latest update results in improvement. Thanks, Mitch

Yes they have tried to fix it and it is working better than the last JAWS
update but Windows 10 mail app is still not working as normal as in JAWS 18.

Hi All,

What's new in this release:
Enhancements in JAWS 2018.1802.78 (February 2018)

The following is a list of improvements made in JAWS 2018 between the
December 2017 update and the February 2018 update.

To download the latest release, visit the
Downloads web page.

JAWS
list of 12 items
When you open an inaccessible PDF file in Adobe Reader which normally just
reports: "Empty Document", JAWS now displays a dialog box asking if you want
to perform OCR directly on the file. Choose Yes to have JAWS recognize the
image and display the text in the Results Viewer or choose No to close the
dialog
box without performing OCR. This is the same as using the layered command
INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, D to OCR a document. We are now proactively offering
this
for all JAWS and Fusion users when we recognize that scanned PDF files have
been opened in Acrobat Reader.
When you press INSERT+SPACEBAR followed by QUESTION MARK for help with
layered commands, the list of keystrokes is now displayed in the Results
Viewer
to make them easier to review.
You can now press Right Shift+DOTS 1-2-3-7 from a Focus braille display to
toggle the JAWS Screen Shade feature.
The commands to read the next or previous word (CTRL+RIGHT ARROW and
CTRL+LEFT ARROW) will now continue to speak when Speech On Demand is active.
Note
that due to the way keystrokes are handled in Microsoft Office applications,
these commands will continue to remain silent i
