[JAWS-Users] Going to give a Day-runner type program a chance again. Any recs for ease of use w/Jaws?

2011-03-06 Thread Chanting Monks

Hi folks,

In the past, I've tried a program or two to replace my Day Runner, but never
been satisfied with their performance or the ease of use. Anyone got a
recommendation for a program that's simple to use, and will give me the
basics? Primarily, I want to set my To do list, have the current day's list
open up when I launch, and check off tasks as they're completed so they move
into a "done" list or are marked as completed so I can still reference them
for that day. I know there are all sorts of bells and whistles available
now, but I'm pretty much a luddite when it comes to this, so the simpler,
the better. Also, I want to avoid a program that does this sort of thing
through my e-mail(since I'm clinging onto Outlook Express until I can no
longer run it), and would like to keep my scheduling and e-mail totally
separate.

Thanks in advance for any tips!

Best,
Joe Monks

Hi folks,

Was surfing the net this morning and when I reached a site, I was
immediately locked into the forms box, unable to exit using the arrow
key. When this has happened before, I simply hit Escape, and could again
arrow in and out of the search box. Not today. Today, Jaws said: Virtual
PC cursor (which I have never heard before), and once I hit Escape, that
was it. Jaws refused to read out any content on the site, I could not
refresh the page or reload it, if I tabbed into the address bar and went
to another page, if it had a Search box, same thing happened. How can I
turn off this Virtual PC Cursor? If I shut down Explorer and reopened it,
the same problem occurred. A full reboot seemed to get things back to
normal, until I tried the YahooGroups home page, which immediately
brought back the Virtual PC Cursor issue. I'm using Jaws 11.o.756u, with
it set to allow me to enter text into forms boxes without clicking Enter
to activate forms mode. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Joe.
John Justice here.

1. Open a document in Microsoft Word.
2. Press Insert V to open the Verbosity settings.
3. Down arrow until you hear a reference to headings. Press space bar to
change it to Off.

that should do it, Joe. You think you have problems now. Getting brains
off of a hard copy is much more difficult than dealing with jaws when it

Hi folks,

Haven't been around in a while, so apologies if this question's been done
to death. Just upgraded to Jaws 11 today, and in every WORD file I open,
every line (be it the first line in a paragraph or continuing text from a
previous line) Jaws reads out: Heading Level 1. Needless to say, since I
write screenplays, this is a problem. According to my wife, everything is
still the same as it was pre-upgrade. Style in WORD is normal, and it's
all plain text. And, it applies the Heading Level 1 to every line, be it
the title, a single sentence, a copyright date, etc.

If somebody can tell me how to stop this or what setting I need to
change,
basically anything before I blow my brains out (I'm on deadline, no
less),

much appreciated. Thanks!

2010-04-16 Thread Chanting Monks

Hi Don,

After some trial & error last night, I called Freedom Scientific today and
had my wife (sighted) on hand to pretty much go thru the steps you outlined
below. Thanks to everybody who responded (or who might later when they catch
up), much appreciated. Thanks too to Cory (Corey?) at FS, he had me running
headings-free in a whopping three minutes. Only thing the wife and I missed
last night was actually starting out with the Insert V keystroke in the
application (WORD) I was particularly interested in. We started from there
today, and then I believe followed the steps you detailed for other apps.

Situation resolved, things runnin' great. Jaws 11 mini-review? So far, so
good. :)

Try the following to turn off heading announcements. I realize your Word
document is not an HTML webpage, but I believe JAWS treats headings and
such

the same, whether on a webpage, PDF document, or Word document.

1. Press Insert (CapsLock if using the laptop keyboard layout) + F2, then
arrow down to "Configuration Manager", and hit Enter.

2. Press Control + Shift + D, to open the Default file, so the change
applies to all applications.

3. Press Alt + S, followed by H, to open the "HTML Options" dialog.

4. Press Control + Tab until you hear the "Headings and Frames" Tab.

5. You should be placed on the "Heading Verbosity" radio buttons. Arrow
down to "No headings" and press Enter.

6. Press Control + S to save your settings and then Alt + F4 to close
Configuration Manager".

If you want to handle heading announcements in unique ways or to handle
level 1 headings different from level 4 headings, check out the Sounds and
Speech Manager within the Configuration Manager. I have a scheme that
reads
level 2 headings (RSS feed headlines) and Quotes in the Daniel voice,
Karen
for norermal text and Speak capitals and All Caps. I do not use this
scheme

all of the time, but I like the effect.

I'm a luddite and would probably still be using Jaws 6 if I didn't need to
run some newer stuff. Skipped 10 entirely, and my biggest problem has been
the need to update I.E. So far, everything seems to be working fine
w/version 11, and this Heading Level 1 problem initially disappeared after a
reboot, popped up again briefly, and after a restart of WORD hasn't reared
it's ugly head again. If I continue having problems I may call FS about it,
but so far, the evening's gotten a heckuva lot better.

Hi Joe,

Sory I can't help you, but I'd love to know the answer as well. I found so
many problems with Jaws 10 of a similar nature that I went back to Jaws 8.
Yeah, calling normal text headings drove me around the bend. I know I did
get it to stop, but there were other issues that were unstable, thus my
rollback to version 8 where I'm still happy. I'm disappointed to hear
those

same problems are in version 11. I considered it a very major problem, and
I'm surprised why people didn't holler and have FS fix it.

[JAWS-Users] Word error keeps spellcheck from working, suggestions?

2009-01-05 Thread Chanting Monks

Hi folks,

Just upgraded (yeah, I know, little behind the times...) to WORD 2003 for
XP. I'm running Jaws 9.05.01. Here's the issue. When I try to spellcheck a
document, I get the following problem when I try using the arrow key to see
what is actually in the spellcheck window:

Unknown function call to: isdocprotected

Jaws spells this out exactly as above, with the isdocprotected all one word.
My recent problem was getting Jaws to speak in the spellcheck window, could
never get that fixed, so we uninstalled my old copy of WORD and installed
the newer version my wife owns since this one has been more stable for her.
Any ideas? This potentially a WORD problem, or a Jaws problem? For five
years, Jaws and WORD worked pretty seamlessly, until the WORD dictionary and
spellcheck started getting glitchy, before failing to work entirely. Any
help is greatly appreciated, hope all had a good new year's.

[JAWS-Users] Outlook Express rec?

2008-08-13 Thread Chanting Monks
Hi folks,

Been having a bit of an issue lately with my Outlook Express. When I first
boot up, the first time I open the program, JAWS does not read out if mail
is read/unread, when I open a mail it automatically starts reading it like a
web page (i.e. Page has 18 links... instead of beginning with the text of
the message), and when I try to shift from identity to identity, in the
Switch Identity menu, the arrow up or down keys are met with Jaws telling
me: "No Selected Item." Now, I can still change identities because I know
which is which by heart, but on the next identity, there is the same
problems, and Outlook Express quickly gets glitchier and glitchier until I
restart. If, however, when I boot up, this problem occurs, if I shut
down(full shut down, not restart), on the second or third boot, the problem
is gone. My wife has run through a number of updates, I've Googled around to
see if I can find any patch for this problem, and nada. Anybody have any
ideas about a fix, or if not, has anybody moved on to MS Mail who can tell
me if the Switch Identity function works the same? I rather dislike the full
blown version of Outlook and like the simple means of switching identities
in the file menu. I have four very active business e-mail accounts, and I
don't want any confusion with them, so OE has always offered me a pretty
foolproof means of switching back and forth. Any suggestions/recommendations
are greatly appreciated. Oh, and the Jaws version is 9.0. Thanks.

Best,
Joe Monks

2008-01-15 Thread Chanting Monks
Hi Chris,

They're both set the same as on the old machine, and all other reading (like
your message, etc.) works fine. It is apparently only when I type in my own
messages and try to edit/read that text. The windows are all open and sized
as before, just no readout. I've also come across another oddity since
yesterday. When I open Outlook Express and new messages download, unread
messages are described as such. The minute I start toggling, Jaws no longer
tells me which messages in the list remain unread. Strange gremlins at the
moment indeed.

Joe Monks

[JAWS-Users] Some troubleshooting help needed

2008-01-14 Thread Chanting Monks
Hi folks,

Just upgraded across the board (laptop, software, etc.) and am having a bit
of trouble. When I am typing a new message in Outlook Express (version 6.0),
with Jaws 8.0 running, I cannot backspace or arrow back and hear what I just
typed. I cannot select text, arrow up or down a line and hear anything. If I
try to copy out what I have typed to bring it into WordPad to read it for
errors prior to sending, nada. Anybody know if there is a Jaws setting for
reading back message reply text that I may need to look for in Jaws 8 that
wasn't in version 7 or earlier? I was running 7 on my old laptop, and
installed fresh from CD for the new box. If anybody has any suggestions,
that would be great. Thanks.

Best,

Joe

Hi folks,

Anybody out there using Cloudmark as a SPAM screener? My wife says it's the
most effective program she's ever run, but I haven't been able to find out
about its ease of use with Jaws. Has anybody tried it? Thanks in advance.

Hi David,

I hadn't heard about the demo. One of my friends has a slightly older
version and that never seemed particularly amenable to working with JAWS,
but this is something to look into. Thanks much.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Thunderbird Query

2007-10-29 Thread Chanting Monks
Sorry that I don't have an answer for you, Chris, just another question to
add. Has the new version of Thunderbird gotten rid of the annoying 'ex
western' issue? I am still hoping that Thunderbird will eventually be my
e-mail program, but thus far I've stuck with OE because of ease of use and
familiarity.

Fantastic, I will check those out, much appreciated. Be nice to handle this
on my own instead of having to use my webmaster to do this sort of grunt
work. Would you happen to know if it allows for images to be uploaded along

Hi Siobhan,

Will Live Journal appear on my own site? A friend of mine uses it, but to
view it I always need to go to the Live Journal site. Since I have a number
of sites and post different content to each on the same day quite often,
does this enable me to have those blogs post to the site (or sites) I
choose? Thanks.

[JAWS-Users] Blogging software that updates via e-mail?

2007-10-28 Thread Chanting Monks
Hi folks,

I've been trying to use WordPress (and not successfully, I might add), and
navigating around it to try and update my blogs myself is a nightmare. I've
heard people talk about a means of blogging where you simply e-mail your
blog to an address you set in the software, so your subject line becomes
your blog header/title, and your blog appears as what is contained in the
body of the e-mail. Does anybody know if WordPress is capable of this, or
another blogging software program that is friendly with JAWS? Thanks much
for any suggestions.

Best,

2007-08-10 Thread Chanting Monks
Thanks much, Mark. Follow-up: if I make this change, when traveling, would
my laptop automatically recognize if I used the dial-up or I'd continue to
have to switch back and forth? Up until this problem first began, if I were
traveling and used a dial-up, the computer automatically recognized that
port was being used and brought up my Connect Using... box so I could type
in the number. It isn't a dealbreaker if I need to switch the settings every
time I travel, but sure be nicer to have the box automatically figure out
which means of connecting I was using, as it used to until recently. Thanks!

[JAWS-Users] Question about working offline (for no reason)

2007-08-09 Thread Chanting Monks
Well, no good reason, at least. I am not sure why, but for the past several
weeks, if I tab into the address bar to type in a web site, google.com for
example, if I mistype the address, I am instantly shuttled to a screen
offering me connection options since I have been declared to be working
offline. This never happened before, and I have typed plenty of wrong URLs
in the past. Anybody know why this might be happening? Since it seems my
computer's default setting for the internet is a dial-up connection (though
I am on DSL), I have to shut down the browser and relaunch it every time
this occurs. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks. I
am running Internet Explorer with Jaws 7 on one laptop, Jaws 8 with IE on
the other.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Suggestion

2007-07-25 Thread Chanting Monks
Hi Chris,

Maybe it's just me, but I've rarely felt that this list's traffic has gotten
to the point that even some non-informative posts (thank yous, etc.) has
created any significant problems, even when I was on dial-up. I do know that
while it would certainly cut down on list traffic to do as you suggest, I
know I catch info about programs and functionality that I never even thought
to ask about; a quick keystroke or tip; information about issues that I
hadn't encountered in JAWS yet, that have been invaluable to me, which I
have only stumbled upon by reading the group posts. That's my .02 cents.

Plus, wouldn't the suspense get to you if you saw a really good question and
nobody on-list answered it?  8()

Re: [JAWS-Users] thunderbird

2007-07-12 Thread Chanting Monks
I pitched Thunderbird for the ex-western thing. The program itself is very
accessible, it's supposed to be more stable than Outlook Express, it has
better archiving features, but the ex-western after every paragraph and
whenever I opened a new message was a dealbreaker after about four days.
I'm back on OE until either something better comes along, or somebody
figures out how to configure T-bird and JAWS not to read ex-western in
message bodies.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Dell and Demo programs

2007-07-08 Thread Chanting Monks
I just got a new DELL laptop, and one of the things I learned from the rep I
spoke to was that if you look at their small business models, the machines
come with nothing installed on them but the operating system (and you can
still get XP if you want), and that at any given time there are just as many
small biz machines on sale at the same price as the home/personal use
machines. Goes for almost all their desktop models, too. The next time
anybody upgrades, if you're looking into a DELL, see about their Dell Deals
in the small business section and you'll find sturdier machines without
most, if not all, bonus programs. My first DELL laptop more than 5 years ago
was an Inspiron, and it's still running great, despite me having toted it
around the country a number of times and it running an average of 14-16
hours a day. The DELL rep was surprised the thing was still alive. Now I
upgraded to a Latitude model, and it came totally clean. DELL gets paid to
put all the giveaway programs on their home use systems (or so the guy at
DELL told me), which keeps the prices down. Now that I know this, I'm going
to stick with the small biz tier of computers. I think the biggest price
difference I saw in the two models I was interested in was $79 bucks, and to
get a machine without all the software I never plan to use that would have
to be uninstalled, the few extra bucks was well worth it.

I hadn't even heard about a new keystroke, and this is one that on my older
laptop I would need to have. Is there a master list of all current
keystrokes available somewhere? I'd love to put together my own keystroke
cheat sheet for the ones that I don't use as frequently so eventually I
could memorize them all.

Does this mean that neither JAWS nor Thunderbird can be set not to read
that, then? I don't know a thing about encoding, but if that is going to
happen every time I get mail, that's definitely a dealbreaker. Thanks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Thunderbird questions

2007-06-15 Thread Chanting Monks
I think my wife posted something on a Thunderbird message board, if I hear
anything back, I will definitely post it. I like the stability of T Bird so
far, but if I can't figure out how to get rid of all that extra speech and
the delay every time I send a mail while it reads me out the progress bar,
etc., I'm going back to Outlook Express.

Insofar as sending my mail, I do believe it is sending it out quick, it is
just that every time I send something it reads through the whole line about
sending, progress percentage, etc. I am wondering if that might be more a
JAWS setting than T Bird, as OE doesn't do this while sending, only while
receiving.

Best,
Joe Monks

Re: [JAWS-Users] scripts for thunderbird

2007-06-14 Thread Chanting Monks
Ditto the thanks for the scripts, hopefully I will have them in this
afternoon and can test them out. Has anybody had an issue with their e-mail
client (OE or T Bird) reading out odd stuff in the blank lines between
paragraphs or headers? For instance, I get a new mail on my new laptop, and
in the first double space, JAWS says: Ex Western. This happens between all
paragraphs. It did not happen on my older laptop in OE, but now it is
happening in both T Bird and OE. I'm not quite sure even what Ex Western
refers to. The text itself of those two words does not appear in the body of
the mail, only where OE used to say simply, 'Blank.' If anybody knows if
this is JAWS related or e-mail program related, much thanks.

[JAWS-Users] Thunderbird questions

2007-06-13 Thread Chanting Monks

Hi folks,

I remember a few months ago (I think it was David), jumped to
Thunderbird and was playing around in it. Well, ditto here, and if
anybody can help me out on the following two items, I'll be grateful.

1) Is there a menu that enables you to determine which fields TBird
reads first in the Incoming Mail pane? In Outlook Express, it read out a
new mail this way to me:

Unread, From, Bugs Bunny, subject colon left bracket Jaws dash users
right bracket, Joe is lost, Six slash thirteen slash zero six, twelve
thirty two p.m.

T-Bird is reading out the subject line, then the sender, then me for
some reason, and then the time, and then all sorts of other stuff that I
would prefer not to hear at all. Anybody know what menu I have to get to
to change this? My wife has workin' eyeballs, she hasn't found it yet,
either.

2) When I hit SEND, in OE, the message used to disappear instantly, and
the list would be back up of new messages. Now, every time I hit SEND,
Thunderbird tells me (and this takes several seconds) that it is
sending, progress, etc. It is quite time consuming to wait around for
four to five seconds with every mail I reply to or generate. Anybody
know if there is a way to change that? This laptop is smoking fast, I
can't imagine that my older system, 5+ years old, was faster at sending
out a message than this system is.

Thanks, as always, for any help.

Best,
Joe
