[JAWS-Users] saying good by to an old friend

2018-07-23 Thread David Ferrin
This is likely my final post on here as I am going to delete this list in the
hope that everybody who wants has already moved over to the new list or is at
least planning on it.

I should say it will be the same list, just in a new location.

Afternoon all.

Using JAWS 2018, Windows 10 and WLM, I was wondering if, with the new email
list, will I need to do anything in order to send messages to the new list,
or will they be automatically sent there. Thanks in advance.

It is not possible for me to do that given there is no feature that I can

So it is dealers choice so to speak, people may join or not it is their

Even though I have participated on this particular list minimally as a
contributor, I also vote for integrating the list with the existing JAWS for
Windows Users Group on the Groups.io e-mail list/online forum. No purpose
is served by having multiple JAWS user groups. It's one thing, for
instance, to have specialist groups like the JAWS scripting group, but if
one is looking to bring end users together the idea should be reaching the
largest audience in a single place.

For anyone who's curious, send an e-mail message to the Help e-mail address

Personally, I'd love to see the JAWS for Windows, NVDA, and Windows 10 for

any one of them that doesn't have partial or total cross-over interest for
the other. In addition, Groups.io gives you an exquisite level of control

Armed wrestled my wife, FYI she let me win. All kidding aside the plan is to
shutdown this list on Monday. I figure that should be enough time for those
who want to move over to get it done. You always lose some people but you
gain others so it works out in the long run I imagine. Besides after all of
this typing and among other reasons my fingers are thinner here lately.

largest audience in a single place.

Personally, I'd love to see the JAWS for Windows, NVDA, and Windows 10 for
Screen Reader Users groups "fused." There is very little that goes on in
any one of them that doesn't have partial or total cross-over interest for
the other. In addition, Groups.io gives you an exquisite level of control
over just what e-mail messages you will get from any group of which you're

[JAWS-Users] major announcement

2018-07-19 Thread David Ferrin
I am considering moving the list over to groups IO as I understand they seem to
have less problems of being bounced by various internet providers. Over the
years and especially lately we have lost a number of good members since their
providers will not allow messages from this domain to get to subscribers, and
as such they bounce and get removed by the server. I can’t even contact these
people privately since my email address is tied to this domain.

I have to bring my people up to date on groups IO next, the good thing it is a
lot easier to figure out than Mailman. It is almost 10 years since the last
move and with luck this will be the last. I do not know how much longer I will
keep running this beast, but believe it or not in October it will be 13 years.
Bob and I never figured on it lasting this long, There is obviously a need
which is the reason for keeping it.

The following domains are currently blocking messages from this domain
refusing delivery. There are 3 at this time but my memory is only giving me
2 right off hand. I am sure Mike will come up with the third.

Never the less the point to this message subscribers using:

sbcglobal.net
or
bellsouth.net

are not receiving anything from this domain, both list traffic and also
personal correspondence.

If any of you out there can help by contacting any such list members and
explaining the problem we would appreciate it.

They in turn need to call their ISPs to find out what they can on that end.

We have lost a lot of good members over the years because of stuff like
this.

[JAWS-Users] memo to the entire list

2018-06-21 Thread David Ferrin
The server this domain is being hosted is getting an upgrade in the next
couple of days. What this means to you folks is that things might be a
little out of sorts for a short time as our internet protocol or I. P.
address is going to change. It is very likely that services will be
disrupted while things propagate with all of the various servers around the
world.

What that means is with the new address all of the servers need to be made
aware of the new address and until that happens things will not be as smooth
until all of that activity is resolved.

The web site and the mailing list will both most likely be effected. Not to
worry as all will return to what passes for normal around here in short
order.

Nobody needs to do anything on their end, in fact all I have to do is enjoy
the ride so to speak.

Thank you for your understanding in advance as this should improve services.

Hi,
I thought of something. You may want to make a jaws frame which surrounds
the umute button, give it a keyboard command and tells it to click the
button inside the frame after routing the jaws cursor there, and only
appears when it sees you are in chrome and on that website. It only
activates then. Next, assign it a keyboard command and make it say something
so you know it worked. And then assign another jaws frame to the play button
using jaws frames viewer.

not how to get a copy of their own messages. As I said earlier, there are 2
schools of thought for someone to get a copy of their own messages sent to a
list. The first was to put, recent plus a colon in front of your email
address on the General tab in account properties, and the second was to put,
recent plus a colon, in front of your Account Name / email address on the
Server tab of account properties. People have had success using both ways,
but I guess the important thing to remember is that if one way does not
work, try the other! LOL

Browser, How To

Hi All,

The following was told to me by Rick Justice, and I just do a sorry job of
typing it up! This is done with Jaws 16 thru J2018 latest and Windows 7.

Note: If you have the file path of the browser already pasted into a text
file, and also the website's URL you're creating the shortcut for also
pasted into the same text file it makes doing the following much easier.
Otherwise you'll have to browse for the browser file path. The example I'm
going to use is with Chrome and the Jaws-Users website.

1. Go to the desktop and make sure that nothing is selected. Either press
F5 when on the desktop or hold down the control key and press the spacebar
to deselect anything that is already selected.

2. Press the, applications / context menu key, / right mouse click, to bring
up the context menu items.

3. Choose new from the menu and then choose create shortcut from the sub
menu.

4. A 2 stage dialogue opens. The default field says type a location. Paste
the Chrome file path right here.

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe"

Take notice of the quotation marks at the beginning and end of the file
path. At the end of the file path put a space with the spacebar to the
right of the ending quotation mark. Now put the website URL you want this
shortcut to open, but you, do not, need to put the, http:// orr www., you
only need to put everything after the, http:// or www., text. See example
below.

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" jaws-users.com

5. Tab to the, Next, button and press the spacebar to open. This is where
you put in a name for this shortcut. After typing the desired name tab to,
Finish, & press enter.

Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Firefox 60

I still had a 52.X ESR installer on my system. SO I just uninstalled V60,
ran the 52.X installer and updated to the most current one capable with the
older version and am now am on Firefox Version 52.8.0. The same one I was on
before trying the Quantum or whatever it's called.
The other issue I was having with Firefox 60 and Jaws on The Old Reader:
This is what I sent VFO:
I am noticing with the latest Firefox 60 (ESR and standard version) when
browsing down my list of RSS posts. Be it in a particular feed’s entries, a
folder created by me or even in the all posts view, when I click enter or
press the spacebar to expand that particular entry to show the summary (this
is in list view. Not full view) and then later wish to do the same for
another RSS entry, Jaws doesn’t appear to be able to accomplish this second
task.
I’ve tried using the Jaws cursor, maximizing the window and then pressing
enter or spacebar, tabbing to be sure Jaws focus isn’t somewhere else, but
nothing seems to work. It’s basically pick one RSS entry and that’s it. The
only thing I can do to be able to select another RSS entry to view is do an
entire page refresh. Which isn’t a solution as once the refresh occurs, all
previously unread posts are marked as read.
In my case, The Older Reader is marked as my home page and I refer to it all
the time. So this one bug is proving to be quite disruptive. I don’t know if
it has something to do with a virtual buffer focus or some other element,
but I am not able to figure it out on my end. To be clear, this particular
behavior is not present in prior versions of Firefox. I have been using the
V 52.x ESR version before upgrading to v60 without this issue present.
So anyway, in the same email response I pasted below, I got this note from
the same tech:
Also, I did see your other e-mail in which you mentioned a specific Web
site. I did look at that Web site, but I found that it requires signing up
for an account to see the issues. If you could provide us with a site with
these issues that does not require signing up for an account, that would be
very helpful.

Ok... but as I specifically mentioned this website, it kind of defeats the
purpose...
Again, probably one of those things I'd have to call in to better
demonstrate the exact problem, but I'm busy throughout the day and always on
the phone, doubt I'd be able to do it any time soon.
This is why I figured in part to just go back to V 52 and maybe wait for
another Jaws or Firefox release with hopefully some more improvements. I've
waited a few months, what's a couple of more weeks...
As long as you don't mess with your profile on your system, then
uninstalling and reinstalling any version of Firefox shouldn't be a big
deal. That said, standard caveats of backing up and all that apply. Also, I
do have a Firefox account for easier browser syncing between multiple PCs
and my iPhone so there's that too.

maybe a simple restart of your computer might take care of the problem. To
check word wrap in Notepad, open Notepad, and press, Alt + O. If Jaws
reports word wrap is not checked, press enter to check it.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] jaws not reading

It is happening again! In word or notepad files JAWS decides not to
read line by line nor word by word when I arrow down. This happened a
few months ago and miraculously returned to normal only to reappear
yesterday. This happens in both JAWS 18 and 2018. However, if I hit
insert2 it reads well.
I have called F/S but they have no solution.
Please advise.

Hello all

Not sure how to explain this but forgive me if I goof up.

Ok, I have folders on my documents

On several folder it will say where this folder is located, for example (music
documents(

Yesdterday it did not say documents after the folder and now it does.

Also on my outlook if I press the f12 to save the post and I am going letter by
letter to save it, jaws will continuesly read the entire line where it didn’t
read the entire line yesterday jus want I was copying.

For example

Subject line: Santas Workshop, Chocolate cake

I press f12 and just want to copy chocolate cake.

All the while jaws is saying santas workshop chocolate cake

I hope this makes sense.

Thanks

Hi Again Dave,

Okay I just gave the latest version another run, and the only way I was able
to use this new version as far as scanning in Windows and Application
modes, but not able to find the results was use the Touch Cursor plus other
cursor calisthenics. Doing the first run using the clean button / checkbox
is no problem, but now the cursor calisthenics begin. I think this new
version is now doable, but it will just require more effort. I was able to
clean the Registry and view the results of this scan with no problem, so I'm
taking back my statement that it's not accessible, but I will say that it's
not nearly as accessible using the cleaning options as versions 5.40 and
earlier. Now, this is all based on a loose definition of accessible! LOL

Gerald,

I'll jump in here, as well. I'm using version 5.42.6495. Windows 7 32-bit
Professional SP 1.Using JAWS 2018 latest build, but works all the way back
to version 16, as well. As I tab through the program, I land on buttons. I
press a button with the spacebar, and continue to tab, as there are now
other buttons resulting. e.g. if I tab past the Tools button, I land on the
next button -- Options. But is I select Tools, Uninstall, Startup, Browser
Plug Ins, etc. With continual Tabbing, I come back around to the first
button "Check for Updates".

If I select the Uninstall button, and tab enough, I land on a list view,
showing all my installed programs. I can navigate this list using the
up/down arrows, as well as first-letter navigation to jump quickly to a
particular program.

There are times when I select from a list and select an action like remove,
where I lose focus. Then all I do is Alt-tab away and back in to CCleaner
and tab back to the list. IF that is not accessible, then I have several
other programs that are totally worse.

That's reassuring. But Piriform has been known to play games with its

CCleaner 5.42 does not necessarily mean that Piriform won't again try to

No, it should be 1803, which is the code for the latest Windows 10 release,
being the year 2018 and that the version was the one written in March, 03.

The Fall Creator Update was 1709.

I have briefly used the EaseUS MobiMover with Jaws 2018 along with windows 7
and it does to appear to be Jaws friendly. I did an audio recording of a
baseball game using total recorder as an MP3 file and I transfered it to my

transfer and when the transfer has completed.
However, it does appear to be much easier for me to navigate than the
dreaded Itunes. Any additional tricks and tips offered is much appreciated.

Sandy,

As far as the simplest to set up, and signal strength, get the Apple Airport
router. The GUI to do adjustments is quite accessible, as well.

You did not say whether you are using cable or telephone data as your
incoming broadband. Either will require you get a modem to interface with
the broadband. Many of those broadband routers come with Wi-Fi capability.
However in my case I turned off the Wi-Fi in my Arris Cable modem and use

Ever since level 2 worked on my computer yesterday, forms mode does not come
on automatically when I press tab. I can't remember which version of Jaws it
was where you still had to press enter to go into forms mode, but I have to
do that now on websites like BARD and Jaws says, "forms mode off" each time
it goes off which I don't think it usually does. Also, the list that comes
up for auto complete with control K is incomplete. The current address for
the DB Review list wasn't in that list at all, just two previous addresses.

As a reminder, the dialog to set a permanent placemarker is begun with

they are not designed for computer speakers. I just ordered a $30 card from

reasonable about $3.00. I use this card exclusively for jaws. That way I can

In fact the documentation does state that it could possibly run multiple
jobs at the same time if that is what you are asking. I have concerns about
doing that as there is always so much running on a system in the background
to start with. The multiple jobs in my way of thinking would be for backing
up the various collections of source material on an individual basis.

I have an external drive which I use to back up all my music, which I

I started to take a closer look at this program and it does have some
important advantages over some older comparable programs for backing
up files ETC. For example it is much faster than Karen's’ replicator
which for me has been the gold standard for many years already.

The rub is its’ help file is roughly as useful as a screen door in a
submarine. Specifically where it comes to creating multiple jobs is my
current stumbling block along with another item or so, but I like to
tackle one thing at a time.

So if anybody out there has some pointers or better documentation I
would appreciate having a look myself. Thanks in advance.

[JAWS-Users] fast copy

2018-04-20 Thread David Ferrin
It does look like it is free to distribute so I’ll go ahead and put it up on
the server shortly. The operating instructions at least in my opinion leave
something to be desired. Creating multiple jobs is still just out of my grasp
so far. I am starting to make out some of the settings in a job stream that
work best for my needs so that is progress for a Friday.

Hi David. This is good to know.

I've been trying to figure out a powershell script to do this for me, but
I'm wondering if the program you mentioned could do the following:

I have an external drive which I use to back up all my music, which I have

I started to take a closer look at this program and it does have some
important advantages over some older comparable programs for backing up
files ETC. For example it is much faster than Karen's’ replicator which
for me has been the gold standard for many years already.

The rub is its’ help file is roughly as useful as a screen door in a

current stumbling block along with another item or so, but I like to
tackle one thing at a time.

So if anybody out there has some pointers or better documentation I would

I found this on the Microsoft Answer page from Googling the question. I did
it and named it, creatively enough, volume, and assigned control+alt+v,
which
gets you to the master volume control on my Windows 10 Home system.

Then, alt+x gets you to the mixer controls where you can adjust programs
separately, supposedly.

Here is what I found:

Yes,you can create a Master Volume Shortcut and also assign a Shortcut Key.

Right click on a empty area on desktop, and click on New and Shortcut.

Paste the following in to the location of the item area:-

%windir%\System32\SndVol.exe -f 49825268

Click Next button and give a name to the Shortcut and click Finish.

Now You right click on it and select Properties.

Click Shortcut tab.

Assign your desired shortcut key like F8 or F9 in the Shortcut Key area.

Click OK/Apply.

gets you to the master volume control on my Windows 10 Home system.

Hi Fernando,

To be honest I don't use any keystrokes for controlling volume. I run 2
soundcards, 1 for system sounds & 1 for Jaws. This way I don't run into
sound override problems. I should have tested the steps I posted, but
assuming they would work correctly if assigned was a poor assumption from
what Net bat states. On second thought, when I get some time I'll play
around since Net bat is running Widows 10, and I'm running Widows 7, to see
if volume keystroke assignment might work differently with Widows 7.

Hi net bat66 and Mike,

Does this procedure works when using Eloquence? In current JAWS versions
there is no Volume slider when setting a voice profile with Eloquence,
unlike with other synths like SAPI 5 or any Vocalizer variant.
As I remember from older JAWS versions, this control when using Eloquence
was simply a read-only edit box which said “Use your system's volume.”

Thanks in advance!

2018-04-15 Thread David Ferrin
I just wanted to remind everybody that when contacting the list moderators the
most efficient manner is to use:

The above address will reach all of us where as if you write to me or one of
the other guys who say for example happens to be on vacation and I know that

receive an answer in a timely manner.

Other than that little glitch things have been running quite smoothly around
here for an extended period of time. Which goes to the lists’ longevity, 12 and
a half years already. Now if you have a reason to contact one of us privately
or don’t mind the possibility of waiting for a reply then go for it.

A friend needed to update her credit card information. She went to the
Amazon website, to:

Your Account

And there she was stopped because the link she needed was not on the page,
or not that JAWS could find.

The next step would have been to go to the link

Account Options

But that link was nowhere to be found on the page.

She called the Amazon disability number and spoke with someone. She
finally

got the credit card information updated with their help, but as they saw,
she, using a screen reader, did not have access to that vital link.
Perhaps

we, as screen reader users, are taken to another site, one supposedly more
accessible? when the screen reader is detected, because the woman assured
her that the

Account Options

Link was there for her, as a sighted user.

The woman filled out a form for their accessibility team, but if we are
currently unable to access information that was available to us before, as
it certainly was, then this is an issue that needs to be addressed by
Freedom Scientific working with Amazon.

I'm posting this here to see if others too will be unable to get to the

Account Options

Link from the

Your Account

Page.

If not, perhaps you too could call the problem to Amazon's attention.

My friend and I are both using Windows 10, version 1709, with JAWS 2018
with

the current March update.

She's using Internet Explorer. I'm using the latest version of Chrome.

There are actually 2 domains you can use to send text messages from your
computer with Jaws to a Verizon user. The first one is for text messages &
I don't have any luck with this one because it has a limited number of
characters, but even if I don't exceed the character count my family /

This second one is the domain for sending pictures / sound files, & doesn't

Hi David and others.

So, not exactly helpful for this list, but I ran NVDA with the VLC add-on.
At the suggestion of someone else, instead of using the native VLC
keystroke, I used the one provided by the add-on to read the status line,
which is independent of the relevant VlC keystroke. I'm guessing this won't
work in fullscreen mode, which is usually the preferred method of video
watching for sighted people at least, because I think it removes all
"extraneous" information to the video content. Anyway, jumping with
ctrl-left and right also announces elapsed time using this combination. It
would be very nice if someone did something similar for jAWS.

Unfortunately, none of my efforts to read the status line with JAWS 18 have
been successful. In fact, using the touch cursor in VLC appears to make JAWS
laggy and unresponsive, on my end, and I'm guessing the mouse pointer cannot
go there, so the JAWS cursor is completely useless.

Hi Lenny,

There are actually 2 domains you can use to send text messages from your
computer with Jaws to a Verizon user. The first one is for text messages &
I don't have any luck with this one because it has a limited number of
characters, but even if I don't exceed the character count my family /
friends don't get the whole text, so I use the second one.
#1:
phonenum...@vtext.com

This second one is the domain for sending pictures / sound files, & doesn't
appear to have a limit, so to speak, & the domain I always use for sending
text messages.
#2:
phonenum...@vzwpix.com

Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!
Sennt from my iBarstool.
Arguing with a woman is like reading a software license agreement. In the
end you have to ignore everything, & click I agree.

Using latest jaws 2018 and win 7, is there anyway to create and send a text
message to a verizon cell phone?

Subject: [JAWS-Users] VLC and time elapsed/remaining

Cool. Let us know if you figure anything out as well. Because I would like
to do this. I'm generally a VlC proponent for video watching but I have to
admit the program, though largely very usable, has some ... accessibility
quirks.

Also, in referring to that Winamp command, I think I meant just "j", and not
"ctrl-j". heheh

The t key displays this information on the screen, however, JAWS will not
announce it. I suppose if one knew where the text was onscreen, you could
probably use the touch cursor to find it. I have tried with the JAWS cursor
before though with no luck. The thing is that the text is displayed quickly
and then disappears, so searching around for it is not really an option. It
would be something possible with scripting, I would think, but to my
knowledge there are no JAWS scripts for VLC at this time. I'm in the process
of learning about this and maybe one day I could create something, but for
now, it's still out of my league.

I believe there is an extension for VLC you can get that forces this data to
remain on the screen permanently. This might help for this purpose. I will
look into it. Alternatively, there might be a sneaky way to find out this
information, like winamp's ctrl-j command, which is meant for jumping to a
specific time, but when invoked, shows the current elapsed time as the jump
value if you don't type anything. I'm not quite sure.

Forgive my ignorance, but are we talking about opening the drive door or
actually ejecting the drive itself? If it is about opening the CD drive
door, Alt-F and press j while on the drive.

I had if memory serves a utility that would eject my DVD drive with a
hotkey
and unfortunately it must have been deleted in my last house cleaning so

off
to do a search myself soon as I send this message, I was just wondering

Morning all.
Can anyone provide me with the instructions for temporarily suspending my
emails from this group? I am not leaving forever; just a hiatus lol.

Thanks.

Would you please send me the program for opening the optical drive? I can
use it on my Wife's laptop. The piece along the side broke, & I always have
to open it manually through the context menu or My Computer. Thanks mooy

You got in the archives for that program Mr. Mike. I will hang on to it for
sure. I was looking for a utility to simply open and close the DVD drive
door and I got one. I will keep this as it will come in handy down the road
ejecting flash drives.
