The server this domain is being hosted is getting an upgrade in the next
couple of days. What this means to you folks is that things might be a
little out of sorts for a short time as our internet protocol or I. P.
address is going to change. It is very likely that services will be
disrupted while things propagate with all of the various servers around the
world.

What that means is with the new address all of the servers need to be made
aware of the new address and until that happens things will not be as smooth

until all of that activity is resolved.

The web site and the mailing list will both most likely be effected. Not to
worry as all will return to what passes for normal around here in short
order.

Nobody needs to do anything on their end, in fact all I have to do is enjoy
the ride so to speak.

Thank you for your understanding in advance as this should improve services.

I would do the jaws dump command and then try to bring it back with the

Hello again,

Revisiting an old question. Wit, it seems, most everyone noticing the
hangup of Internet Explorer at inopportune moments, is this due to the way
it is now interacting with Jaws? Is there a fix that the developers need to
buckle down and work on, or is this an uncooperative Microsoft issue? I
have noticed this behavior in the last several versions of Jaws, but what
can we users do to help "make it better?"

Thanks in advance for the input.

Hello,

With Windows Version 10.0.14393, when I hit Insert+F10 to show "window
list", I am now seeing this "OverlayWindow0 On Top" that I've never seen
before.

I have seen it just after boot up, after loading Outlook and at other random
times.

When I hit Enter to open it and hit Insert+Q twice quickly, it tells me
"JAWS for Windows settings are used in the jfw.exe application. The
configuration name is JAWS Window. The current scheme is Classic."

When I hit Insert+F1, I get "JAWS may not recognize this control. To show
JAWS what type of control it is, press Insert+7. To see more technical
information on the control, press Control+Insert+F1."

When I hit Control+Insert+F1, I get,

"Window Technical Information:

Control ID 0

Class OverlayWindowClass_F7A740FA-AB45-4F46-BB58-3DCEDB196F1C

Handle 983746".

So, it shows the Control Id, Class and Handle. Try saying that Class real
fast. Bet you can't.

When I use Alt+Tab to cycle through my open programs, I don't land on this
Overlay Window; even when I've opened it from the window list.

Do any of you JAWS experts have an explanation for this Overlay window?

Thanks,

I am a bit concerned over the significant drop in list traffic over the past
several weeks. Granted Microsoft has blocked out this domain and earlier this
year road runner did the same thing. Also in the past com cast and others have
done the same.

It might be possible that the list has run its’ course. It is 11 years old this
week as a matter of fact which I find hard to believe myself.

Let’s see how things go for a while before any major decisions are made so
don’t anybody panic at this point. I am just expressing my concern about the
way things have dropped off so much. It had to happen sooner or later. The fact
is I have no idea how long the average email list stays in business, I suppose
that would be an interesting study.

Now to sit back and see what kind of response this message generates.

Hi All,
Last week I contacted MS accessibility to ask if they could assist me with
up-dating to Windows10. I was told that many users, particularly screen
reader users are having problems with Win 10. He said that he would help,
but he didn't recommend it. He explained that most of the individuals having
problems are those up-dating from Windows7 to Windows10. I asked him if I
should first up-date to Windows8.1 and then go to Windows10. He recommended
that I do so. I know that many of you on this list have up-dated to Win10,
but have those of you who went from Win7 to Win10 had a particularly hard
time? I'm looking on Amazon for the cd and I'd rather not buy it if I really
don't need to. I'd appreciate all pros and cons so I can make a final
decision about what I should do. Thanks in advance.

A strange but certainly inconvenient problem with this update is that it won't
authorize on either of my systems running a hardware dongle. I have a lap top
with an ILM key on it and it is not having any problems at all, but my towers
both a 32 and 64 bit systems lost their license. I removed the update and put
the version from last month back on and the dongle works again on the 64 bit.
After lunch I'll take a crack at the 32 bit which my wife uses. I just told her
over the phone that I plan on getting her system back on its' feet so to speak.

Has anybody else encountered this issue? Possibly an email to tech support is
in order, not sure right now exactly what course of action to embark.

Enhancements in JAWS 17.0.1806 (April 2016)

The following is a list of improvements made between the JAWS 17 March 2016
release and the April 2016 update.

To download the latest release, visit the Downloads web page.

JAWS
•Added an "Explore Utilities Folder" item to the Utilities menu located in the
JAWS window. In Windows 10, this enables you to quickly open the folder where
you can explore various JAWS settings folders, launch the Synthesizer and
Braille Manager to add or remove speech synthesizers or braille displays,
remove product activation, and more. Previously, you would have to search for
"utilities" in the Start menu to locate this folder. This menu item is also
available in Windows 7.
•In Windows 10, resolved an issue where JAWS would unexpectedly become
unresponsive for several seconds when switching between apps.
•Addressed a reported issue where text in the Virtual Viewer could not be
copied with MAGic running.
•Resolved a customer reported issue encountered on certain computers where the
HJPad spell checker was not loading the dictionary.
•In response to requests from customers who are creating domain specific
scripts, added a new function, GetElementXML, which returns the XML for the
element at the Virtual Cursor.
•When using the Windows touch keyboard, resolved an issue encountered with some
international versions of Windows where Touch Typing was not working as
expected. With Touch Typing, a key is typed when the finger is lifted from any
of the keyboard buttons. In addition, if a triple tap is performed on a
keyboard button, the panel of alternative characters now opens as expected.

Braille
•In response to customer feedback, if you type "girlfriend", "boyfriend",
"girlfriends", and "boyfriends" using contracted braille, these are now
properly translated.
•Resolved an issue where JAWS would sometimes not detect a Focus Blue braille
display after bringing the computer out of hibernation.
•Resolved a customer reported issue where the contents of the Windows Secure
Desktop or the Windows Lock screen were not being shown in braille.
•Resolved an issue where the Placement of Status Cells option in the Startup
Wizard would become unavailable if it was changed to None. This option should
only be unavailable if a braille display that does not offer status cells is
connected.

Microsoft Outlook
•Addressed a reported issue where the checked or unchecked status of shared
calendars was not being shown in braille.
•When pressing INSERT+H from a message list, resolved an issue where Outlook
specific hot keys were not being displayed.

Microsoft Word
•If the data in a table cell contains line breaks, JAWS now shows the first
line of data up to the first line break on the braille display. To review the
rest of the line in braille, users can press the Next Braille Line or Previous
Braille Line commands or pan through the text.

Web Browsers
•In response to customer feedback, JAWS no longer limits the amount of text it
will read in an alt attribute for an image.
•Addressed a reported issue where empty combo boxes were being skipped when
navigating by word in Smart Navigation. JAWS now announces "space" when
encountering an empty combo box while moving by word.
•Resolved an issue with ARIA alerts not always being spoken after selecting a
button to submit the values from a form.
•If the aria-required attribute is used on a combo box, resolved an issue where
JAWS was not indicating the required state in speech or braille with Forms Mode
active.

Hello,

This is caused by a bad update from Windows Update. See this news article
which points to instructions about how to fix it.
http://www.infoworld.com/article/3013219/microsoft-windows/microsoft-pulls-b
otched-patch-kb-3114409-that-triggered-problems-with-outlook-2010.html

The article says,
Microsoft's Patch Tuesday update KB 3114409, intended to help admins keep
Outlook 2010 from starting in safe mode, has in fact done just the opposite.
Many Outlook 2010 customers report that installing KB 3114409 forces Outlook
to start in safe mode.

As of early Wednesday morning, the patch has been pulled, but if you're
experiencing odd problems with Outlook 2010 -- it opens in safe mode only
(always opens maximized and has no sounds, no reading pane, or other view
settings that stick), has broken templates, and much more -- you should look
at the KB 3114409 article

So, you have to uninstall this update. The news article has a link pointing
to instructions.

Here's a blip from the Oregon Computer Consultant's organization. I see no
reason to doubt their objectivity.
"Updating to Windows 10 - NO!
At meeting of computer consultants on Oct 27 we discussed windows 10
updates. - Not clean installs but updates from 7 or 8.1 to 10. Every
consultant recommended waiting. Despite that, many had tested the update on
their own non-crucial systems. Also, some clients had updated accidentally
or against advice or demanded the consultants update them.

The consultants had experience with 33 update attempts. 11 failed. Most
failures could be reversed and returned to their previous condition, but
some lost their computers completely. This isn't a large sample, and
computer consultants might not have heard from clients who updated
successfully, so my guess is that much less than 33% fail. Probably more
like 10% or 15% and of those probably 80% can return to their old operating
system and continue to run fine, but it still seems crazy to do this with an
important machine.
Furthermore, possible that if you aren't getting the latest versions of all
your software, you could have some incompatibility there.

Tech support centers say that the problems caused by the Windows 10 update
are double that of most other Windows operating system upgrades.
This is probably
not because the upgrade process is worse, but because people are being
forced to do it.

Wait a few more months before you succumb to the Borg."

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Major Outlook 2010 Problem

Hello, everyone.

You may remember that, last week, I posted a quiry to the list regarding an
increasingly sluggish Windows 7 desktop computer with Jaws, to the point
that it became unusable.

I originally thought the problem related to some sort of a virus I had
gotten, since it seemed that something in internet explorer was constantly
running.

I think that might have been part of the problem, but after taking the
computer to a local computer repair shop, it seems that the biggest problem
is with Outlook 2010.

I am not sure how he found this out, but the computer repair person
indicated that my Outlook data file is unbelievably huge! It contains
something like 10 gigs of material, and is constantly running, and trying to
refresh itself.

I access both my work and personal g-mail accounts via Outlook 2010, and am
very good at deleting e-mails that are no longer of use to me.

I also periodically check my all mail folder in my personal g-mail account
to be sure that deleted e-mails are not showing up in there.

I guess my question is this: Should I totally un-install Outlook 2010, and
re-install it again? Or, is there some way I can correct this issue with my
currrent version of Outlook 2010?

My University currently uses Office 365, which I know contains a version of
Outlook, so I'm wondering if that might be another way to go.

The computer tech at my local computer repair shop advises me to forget
outlook, and just access my personal g-mail via the g-mail web site, but I
have not had the greatest luck navigating that web site with Jaws 14. I'm
not sure if such an approach would work with my work e-mail account either.

Any wisdom that can be shed on this issue would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Dr. Tom Behler from Michigan

There is no difference between Home and Professional starting with Jaws 16.
The only difference is that if you are using it in a commercial application,
you need to get the Pro version. The Home version is for individuals.

In earlier iterations, the Home or Standard version would not work on
Windows Pro or Ultimate versions, and they did not support Citrix etc.

I would like to know the difference between the standard and professional
version of JAWS. I know one is for home use and the other is for school
and/or business. What I would like to know is there differences in what JAWS
can do or not do between these two versions? Especially since I have Office
2013 Home and Business edition, will the standard still work with this?
Anything else will be appreciated.

Thank you,

I am always surprised at people's need to stick to the older technology.
I am no means an early adopter. Especially on my work computer, I need to
move slowly so that I don't impact my performance too drastically, but why
would anyone stick with IE 6 I can't imagine. It is riddled with security
holes and hasn't been patched in years.

The fact that it works with JAWS 9 and Windows XP doesn't really encourage
me. I mean, didn't JAWS 3.51 work well with IE 5 and Windows 95? Or some
other combination there of?

Just because a particular combination worked 8 years ago, doesn't make it
the better choice. I didn't particularly like Windows 7 the first couple of
months that I worked with it, but now it works just fine for me, I even like
parts of it better than Windows XP.

Eventually, you have to upgrade or lose out on many things. The longer you
wait to upgrade, the harder it becomes because the more things change from
what you know. Fewer, smaller incremental changes are usually easier than
one huge monumental change.

Hello,
Xp was great, but windows 7 is very accessible. What you need to do is have
someone change everything over to classic view. This will make everything
look and behave just like xp. I did this when I was using vista and use
windows 7 now and my cousin did that for me. It works great. You don't
even know it's windows 7. Give it a try and let me know how it goes.
As a word of caution, if you are using an earlier version of JAWS, you may
find that it is not fully compatible. I han into this issue when I got
windows 7 last year. I was using a version of JAWS 11 that was not fully
supported, so I was getting some error messages, but JAWS still worked. My
cousin just called Freedom Scenentific and they let him download a newer
update that fixed the problem. So like I said, use windows 7 in classic
view.

Hi Scott,
It just so happens that for the past several weeks, I have been working with
Liberty Basic. It is a full featured Basic compiler and it has been fully
Jaws accessible so far. I am Using Win 7 64-bit with Jaws 13. According to
the website, it will also work with Win 8. I am using the demo version,
which means that I cannot produce a standalone .exe program and there are
also nag screens when you exit the program. The program has extensive help
and example programs. I have done extensive programming over the years in
370/Assembler, Cobol, Fortran, RPG, PL/1 and QuickBasic. Out of all of those
languages, my all-time favorites are Assembler, RPG and QuickBasic (Fortran
has many similarities to Basic).

I am writing a little daily reminder program for myself, because I have
never been completely satisfied with the many reminder programs which I have
tested over the years. The program is almost complete and I have really been
enjoying the process of learning Liberty Basic. I told my wife that writing
code again is very relaxing for me. Of course, if I was forced to do it for
40 hours a week, that would probably be a different story.

The link to Liberty Basic is:
http://www.libertybasic.com

The company also publishes a completely free Basic compiler called Just
Basic. I know that it has limitations over the full version of the product
and I have not tested it with Jaws, though I would assume that the
accessibility should be similar.

The link to Just Basic is:
http://www.justbasic.com

If you decide to get into Liberty Basic, contact me off-list and we can
chat.

Oh yes, the cost of Liberty Basic is $60. If you send them an email and tell
them where you heard about the product, they will send you a link to receive
a $10 discount.

Good luck,

Hi Scott,
It just so happens that for the past several weeks, I have been working with
Liberty Basic.

Good luck,
John

Is there a basic interpreter that will run under Windows 8 and will work

Hi

I think you are revealing your age mentioning the green card. The green
card was for the IBM 360. The 370 had a yellow card. I believe I still
have both of those. I agree that IBM assembler was the most straight
forward language, since you had to know what the computer really does. My
first computer job was translating Autocoder programs to Cobol. They gave
us a 3 day course in Autocoder and a 7 day class in cobol and then turned
us lose, neither of which I knew before that. But now I'm showing my age.

Hello Kuenga,

If you press the Windows key and type in View Network Connections (without
the quotes), you should find the item you are wanting. Press enter key on
the View Network Connections choice and you will have a list of the networks
including the local area network. Select the local area network icon and
press enter key. Use down arrow key to either the Internet Protocol 4 or
Internet Protocol 6. Tab to the Properties button and press enter key.

Take care.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Manually provide IP Address.

Hello friends,
Unlike windows XP, I found difficulty of going to the location where we can
manually provide the IP address, for LAN Network in Windows 7. Of course I
know that we need to go to the Local Area Network property, but unless a
sighted friends help me, it has not been easy for me to reach there using
JAWS. I always had to find a sighted person to click with mouse.
Can someone provide me a accessible steps to enable to go to the desired
location?
Looking forward to hearing soon.

Daily Tip:
Safety In Numbers

An easy way to give your data a small measure of protection is to add a
second hard drive to your computer. Hard drive installation isn't difficult
and it gives you the opportunity to store your documents, music, videos, and
other media separately from Windows. If a virus crashes Windows, you can
reinstall Windows on the first hard drive without erasing your files on the
second drive. See our website for articles on the topic.

stop words

Extremely common words that a search tool sometimes omits, including and
and the, among others. Placing the words in quotation marks sometimes
forces the engine to find them.

Re: [JAWS-Users] want to change my default search program in IE9

2012-02-10 Thread John Vernaleken
Yesterday I changed the default browser to Google through the Control Panel
and it seemed to solve the problem. Before I was changing the default while
in IE9 by going to Tools. Was changing while in IE9 treating it as a
temporary change?

Legend has it that on Thursday 2/9/2012 04:04 PM, Chris Smart said:

you could enter Google's address in the home page field.
That's all I do, so it comes up when I open IE 9.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] want to change my default search program in IE9

Somehow my default search program in IE9 got changed to something called
conduit search. I do not like the way it works with Jaws and would like to
go back to Google. However when in IE9 and I go to tools and then to
internet options and tab to the default search choice list Google is listed
twice but for either choice it says not available or disabled. Can anyone
tell me how to go back to Google as my default search engine? I am using
the latest Jaws 13.0.718 update on a windows7 64 bit computer.

thanks in advance for any help on this matter.
