[JAWS-Users] Accessible MP3 Player
Dear All, I have not posted a message on this list for a number of years, but I have found some of the tips on the list most helpful. One of these was a few years ago when I read on the list about the Creative Zen Stone. This is an MP3 player that does not have a screen but can be operated with buttons. It had an edge over the iPod Shuffle in that it could fast forward one folder rather than one track at a time. My Zen Stone has just broken down, and I can't find them for sale any more. I am writing on the off chance that anyone on the list might be able to suggest a similar MP3 player that I could purchase as a replacement. I would prefer one with similar functionality to the Zen Stone. I have bought a couple of Zen Stone players on eBay, but they were not of comparable quality to the newer 2GB model. This is not the sort of device I would care to buy second hand. Another point in favour of a new player would be if it is able to play Audible files. I can use the Book Courier for this, but it is a little unwieldy for the jacket pocket. It is also not easy to navigate Audible files with either the Zen Stone or iPod Shuffle. I would be grateful for any suggestions on a replacement player. Re: [JAWS-Users] FW: JAWS and Mouse
David, Thanks very much for that. You were absolutely right about this being a MAGic issue rather than a JAWS one. I hadn't even considered the possibility, as my version of MAGic is magnification only. No worries about the spellchecker mistake. I could not even mention my worst instance of pressing alt + C instead of Alt + I when presented with an irrelevant alternative to what I had originally typed. Were I to do so, Mr. Ferrin would surely strike me from this list! I remember this feature in Magic when I used to use it. The only way to get Jaws to read what is under the cursor is to switch from the PC cursor to the Jaws cursor using the nomad minus key. Even then Jaws will only respond when you use the cursor keys to navigate the mouse cursor across the screen. It does not respond at all if the physical mouse is moved. I no longer use Magic and use only Jaws. I have quickly checked using the Jaws Say all command in a variety of applications including this email and waving the mouse cursor across the screen has no effect at all on Jaws reading. I cannot remember what the setting in Magic was but I believe it was something like Mouse Echo. There will be a key combination to turn this on and off. [JAWS-Users] Typing Echo in JAWS 9
Dear all, I have recently upgraded to Vista Home Premium and JAWS 9. On the whole I am quite happy with the move, but I have one slight problem that I have never encountered with previous versions of JAWS. I like to have my typing echo on both characters and words. I have attempted to change this from the default typing echo of only saying characters. The three ways I have tried to do this is through the JAWS configuration manager (both the default .jcf file and the application specific ones, through the verbosity options and by pressing insert + f2 keys to scroll through the various options. In all of the above cases, the changes have come into effect immediately, but as soon as I either switch applications or shut them down and reopen them, the typing echo has returned to characters only. It is a bit frustrating to have to change this every time I move from one application to another. I would welcome any suggestions for any control I may have missed. Regards. I earned my certification but not without experiencing a few pitfalls. Also, you are going to need a reader to take the exams since they are computer administered and there is no way the examiners are going to let you install a screen reader. The one thing you have to consider with on-line courses is that if you get stuck trying to understand a particular concept there will be little if any help available to you. Whichever way you go, pick a course with plenty of practice exams. [JAWS-Users] JAWS with the Internet
Dear all, I have had a recurring problem with JAWS and the Internet, and I am wondering whether there is anyone out there who can suggest something. I am using Windows XP Home Edition version 2002 with JAWS 7.1. When using JAWS and MAGic on certain websites, the computer switches off and restarts itself. I have got a sighted person to try out the sites without any adaptive software running, and there is no problem. I have tried the sites with JAWS on a separate laptop, and again the whole thing restarts. It is immaterial whether the browser I use is Internet Explorer (version 7) or Firefox. Is there any setting within either JAWS or windows that can view more coding or Java, if this is the problem? I have never done anything other than accept the default settings when browsing the web, so I would welcome any suggestions. The only clue I have (although I have no idea how to take advantage of it) is that I get a balloon at the bottom of the screen advising me that my virtual memory is too low, and that windows is increasing the size of my virtual memory paging file. The site on which this happens most often is the eBay My eBay page. It is really annoying. I have had to go back to using Zoomtext for viewing this website, which is just about adequate but not nearly as good as being able to use JAWS. Thanks for any help. [JAWS-Users] AVG
Dear all. I have seen messages about AVG from time to time on this list. I have used Norton since 2003, and am now on Norton 360. I have been told by a number of people that Norton slows down a PC and is not necessarily the best, although it is the one most computer shops in this country seem to push. I have looked at AVG's site, and see that there is a free version and one for which you have to pay. The free version seems to do one thing at a time, whereas the paid version seems to include anti virus, anti spyware, anti spam and a firewall. What I would like to know is whether the free version is adequate, or is the paid version the one to go for. It is reasonably priced, so that is not a problem. I have never used the program before, and I would appreciate knowing how well it works with JAWS. The articles on the Tips and Tricks page seem to deal with just the anti spyware aspect, or how to schedule a scan. I would be grateful for any other information. Thanks. I have gone into the global adjustment menu and set the upper case pitch increase setting between 20, 50 and 100 per cent, and still the capital letters sound no different when I am typing. I would appreciate any help from anyone on the list who has experienced this problem. Re: [JAWS-Users] Upper Case Pitch Increase
Rosemarie, I am using Word 2003. I have the same problem with Outlook 2003 as well. I am not sure this problem is application specific, but If there is a way to change the pitch setting for one program, it may work for others. Appreciate anything you can find. Which version of MS word are you using? I could look up in my tutorial and see if it has something about increasing the pitch.
