[JAWS-Users] Windows application key

2016-05-31 Thread Reed Poynter
Hello,

On the standard Windows keyboard, there exists an Applications key
(sometimes referred to as the Menu key). This is not the Windows-key.

On the standard keyboard, it sits to the right of the right Alt-key or to
the right of the right Windows-key.

On my new Lenovo X260, (Canadian Version), I can't find it. If you have an
x260, can you tell me where it might be?

If my new pc doesn't have an Applications key, How can I simulate the
Shift+Applications-Key?

Thanks,

Reed

I posted a query a few weeks ago about my inability to locate any buttons on
a certain webpage that other JAWS users could access with ease. FS's Dennis
Godin has solved the problem, and I think it's worth posting the solution.

Some time ago, the federal government issued a warning about security lapses
in Java, and I removed it from my system. Today, Dennis godin encouraged me
to reinstall it. A quick Google check assured me that the security problems
have been fixed, so I went ahead. One nice thing for those of us who tied
ourselves in knots installing and activating early versions of Java Access
Bridge, which screenreaders need, is that JAB is now incorporated into Java.
You still have to change a setting in the Ease of Access Center, but it's a
simple task.

Between Java and the JAWS insert-escape refresh command, I can now access
the webpage that annoyed me for a month.

Below I'm copying the link to the Java download page and the link to FS's
Java and JAB installation instructions. Note that when downloading Java,
you're encouraged to accept an Amazon and other features that I, for one,
don't want cluttering my system, so be sure to tab through each option as
you go through the installation process. Also, as frequently mentioned on
this list, I suggest saving the file and running it from your system instead
of running it from the website.

Re: [JAWS-Users] f11 on internet explorer

2016-04-04 Thread Reed Poynter
We of course don't know everything you have tried. So we might suggest
something you have tried.

You could try Alt+v (for view) and arrow around to see if you can find
something to change your window size.
You could also try hitting the Applications key and have a look at its
menu.
Using the mouse, you can quite often drag the corner of the window to make
it larger or smaller. It really depends on the application that has been
invoked to watch your video.
You could also ask your daughter what she did with the mouse.

When you put IE into full screen mode, the menues are no longer accessible
from what I've read, & been told. Whether this applies in your situation,
or not, I don't know, but supposedly the, F11 key, is the keystroke to
toggle Full Screen mode on / off in IE11. What the hell, you don't need
Full Screen mode to watch the Flintstones anyways! LOL, hahaha hahaha

Hi All,

I am using JAWS17 on a Windows7 machine with Excel2010. The problem I'm
about to describe did exist when using JAWS16, but if I was persistent, I
could eventually get JAWS to read the information I needed. Here is what is
going on.

. JAWS will only read a portion of my formula from the beginning to
some place in the middle. The formula is 179 characters plus 6 spaces. It
used to be that if I used various navigational commands inside the cell, I
could evidentially read the formula. Now with JAWS17, It is just not
happening.

. When setting up a custom sort I cannot get JAWS to read the
contents of the various drop down lists. It used to be that if I opened the
list, arrowed to where I thought the criteria was that I wanted, tab away
from the drop down list and then back to it, when I opened it the second
time I could hear what I has selected previously. If it was not what I
wanted I would repeat my game of roulette until I landed on my desired
choice. Now if I manage to get JAWS to read something, it continues to read
some random value from the list.

Is anyone else having these issues? Does anyone have any ideas for work
arounds? I hope to have time Friday to call FS, but in the meantime, it
would be really nice to be able to get this task off of my desk at work.

Thanks,

Annette

[JAWS-Users] Recording from the phone

2016-02-03 Thread Reed Poynter
Hello,

I was finally able to have my wife read the label for me on my phone
recorder.

It is the Tele-Recorder model TR-50.

It is a little box less than the length of my little finger, about as thick
as my little finger and about as wide as my thumb.

There are no moving parts, buttons or switches. It just has a wire coming
out of each end; One wire plugs into a phone jack and the other wire plugs
into a recorder line input.

I have it plugged into a splitter on the phone jack and my Book port Plus
and use it in the same way I would when recording anything else. The only
thing to note is that you have to set the record input to external mike
rather than line-in. This is because the level of the phone signal is very
low.

Hope this helps,

Tom,

You might want to explore in the Control Panel for Windows. There is a way
to set up alternative keyboards that can be accessed via a key combination.
I once used this to change my keyboard to a Swedish keyboard, allowing use
of the three diacritical letters in their alphabet. I also believe that you
can change your Windows native language in a similar manner.

So this may not be a JAWS issue, but may be something you inadvertently set
up in your Windows settings.

Look in "region and language" in the Control Panel for starters.

That is a matter of opinion! I have tried most of them for my language, US
English, and in certain circumstances they work great, for everyday use,
Eloquence is still my favorite, it reads punctuation I wish, raises and
lowers pitch for capitalization and after 17 years of using JAWS the cadence

is something I have gotten used to hearing. I have used other voices but I
go back to Eloquence and probably will do so until it disappears from the
program.
I hated Tom years ago, Samantha is horrible, some of the others also sound
like smokers, or Grandpa in Eloquence.
I use Paul from Voice ware in another screen reader and he is fine except
for some mispronunciations on some words. I used Paul then I had K1000 but
it never worked right with Windows 7, the voices in Open Book drive me crazy

after reading with hem for an hour or more. However, Eloquence in Open Book

also drives me crazy if I have to read for more than a few minutes, the
cadence is not the same as with JAWS, the phrasing is off, pitch seems less
stable,. I used it to read a PDF converted for a church project, 288 pages
more or less and I was amused by how it pronounced bible names, annoyed by
the constant higher pitch for some items, have no clue why it could change
pitch in the middle of a sentence, found it very distracting to be frank.
With each chapter of the book taking approximately an hour to read at a high

rate of speed, I wanted to scream by the time I was finished.
Unfortunately, I thought that since I had premium voices from Jaws 16, that
I could remove the ones Open Book used, discovered that is not the case, but

I don't think I would have been any more please by Tom or Samantha which as
I recall were to two main OB choices, since the program has not been updated

since about 2012, I doubt that there would be choices I'd like any better.

If I were to use Vocalizer Premium voices regularly in Jaws 17, it would
probably be Allison or Eva, but the few days I spent with each of them sent
me back to Eloquence.

Hello all,
For any who read tables in html documents, you have noticed the change from
"|" to "cell" being the separator between columns. I contacted FS and they
did this on purpose because some don't like the |. A | has been used for
this purpose since the feature of simple layout VS screen layout was
introduced in Jaws years ago. I've been using it for just as long and my ear
is tuned to | as a separator instead of "cell".

I was told to submit a suggestion to make this a feature change. I have done
so by asking if they can give the user the option of picking the character
used to separate the columns when in screen layout. If anyone else agrees
with me, please email FS at suggesti...@freedomscientific.com

In the meantime, does anyone know how to maybe alter the scripts to do this
without waiting on FS?

Thanks,

Hi Tom,

When in Excel, you could try the following:

Go into Quick Settings with Insert+v,
Down-Arrow until you find "Workbook, Worksheet and Region Settings" (it is
after the Braille settings),
Down-arrow to "Formatting",
Down-arrow to "Font, color, and attribute changes indication",
Hit spacebar to check it.

I haven't tried this. But, I see it in Quick Settings.
It might give you too much information or it might be fine.
Give it a shot and let us know if it works for you.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Excel entering text narrative that crosses columns

2015-07-08 Thread Reed Poynter
Hello,

You want to use the merge columns facility.
I would select the columns/rows that will contain your narrative and hit
control-1 to format the cells. Hit control-tab to move to the alignment tab
and tab around until you find merge columns.
You can then use the format functions to make it look nice.

Note that is from memory and I haven't done it for a while. So, have a look
around and you'll find it.
You, of course, could always Google "excel 2013 merging columns" and find
more than you will want to read.

Hope this helps,

Hi Tom,

Since you indicated that you are very good at deleting unwanted items, I'd
take a look at cleaning up your data files.
Remember that when you simply delete an item, it just goes into your deleted
folder. Check this first and if you have a huge number of items here, you
can permanently delete them.
Next, I'd take a look to see if your data files are being automatically
compressed. I'd go ahead and manually compress them.
A Google search for "how to compress outlook 2010 data files" has lots of
information on this topic.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Major Outlook 2010 Problem

Hello, everyone.

You may remember that, last week, I posted a quiry to the list regarding an
increasingly sluggish Windows 7 desktop computer with Jaws, to the point
that it became unusable.

I originally thought the problem related to some sort of a virus I had
gotten, since it seemed that something in internet explorer was constantly
running.

I think that might have been part of the problem, but after taking the
computer to a local computer repair shop, it seems that the biggest problem
is with Outlook 2010.

I am not sure how he found this out, but the computer repair person
indicated that my Outlook data file is unbelievably huge! It contains
something like 10 gigs of material, and is constantly running, and trying to
refresh itself.

I access both my work and personal g-mail accounts via Outlook 2010, and am
very good at deleting e-mails that are no longer of use to me.

I also periodically check my all mail folder in my personal g-mail account
to be sure that deleted e-mails are not showing up in there.

I guess my question is this: Should I totally un-install Outlook 2010, and
re-install it again? Or, is there some way I can correct this issue with my
currrent version of Outlook 2010?

My University currently uses Office 365, which I know contains a version of
Outlook, so I'm wondering if that might be another way to go.

The computer tech at my local computer repair shop advises me to forget
outlook, and just access my personal g-mail via the g-mail web site, but I
have not had the greatest luck navigating that web site with Jaws 14. I'm
not sure if such an approach would work with my work e-mail account either.

Any wisdom that can be shed on this issue would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Dr. Tom Behler from Michigan

"I've just installed JAWS Version 16.0.2136 on my Windows 7 machine.
In outlook 2010, JAWS no longer reads the title of a new folder window when
changing from one folder to another."

"Thank you for contacting Freedom Scientific technical Support.
If you perform the insert+t command or the insert+end key command, this
reads the title of the window. If I can be of any additional assistance to
you, feel free to email me back.
Be sure to include all previous correspondence pertaining to this matter
when replying to this message so that we might better
assist you."

This was from a support person who has been with Freedom Scientific Support
for many years.

Hi Alan & List Members,

Here you go:
1. Press the, Jaws key + 6, on the number row above the main keyboard to
open the Jaws Settings Center & then press, Control, Shift, + D, to open
Jaws Settings Center default all applications.
2. Arrow down to, Web / HTML / PDFs, & press the right arrow to open.
3. Arrow down to, Navigation, & press right arrow to open.
4. Arrow down to, Screen Tracks Virtual Cursor, & if this is unchecked press
the spacebar to check it. If it's already checked press the, Escape button,
a couple of times to close the Settings Center.
5. If you had to check the, Screen Tracks Virtual Cursor, option tab to
apply, press the spacebar, tab to okay, press the spacebar to save your
change & close the Settings Center.

Take care.

Hello,

Hoping for some direction here as my sighted wife and I have
this discussion frequently.

Is there a way for a sighted person to see on screen what I
am doing with JAWS? The only time this is important is when
I cannot accomplish something with JAWS and require a pair
of eyes. I will use JAWS to go to where I need help and my
wife has no idea of what I'm doing or where I am with JAWS
when looking at the screen. Is there any way around this? It
makes getting sighted assistance very difficult.

may be relevant. It is a new machine with Very little on it. I've been
using this version of Jaws since it was released and never experience this
issue with it or the versions I ran before Jaws 11.2. If you can think of
any additional information that might help please ask. Since this begins as
soon as Jaws is loaded I presumed the operating system and Jaws interacting
and/or the clock feature (something I really know nothing about) were doing
or not doing something. If another process is involved I have no idea what
it might be or how it is effecting things.

Re: [JAWS-Users] [Bulk] Re: CTRL keys do not work.

2015-03-24 Thread Reed Poynter
Hello,

In my case, I could make it happen by hitting the left shift+control key
shortcut.
It would change my keyboard type and, as I indicated in my note below, the
right control key would remain down. So, for example, if I hit the Tab key
with the right Alt key, I would get Alt+Control+Tab.

I've experienced the JAWS problem in the past and I actually did try your
solution of rapidly tapping the control key. It didn't help.
The problem went completely away after making adjustments in Regional and
Language settings.
I know we like to jump on "it's a JAWS problem". But, in my case, it was not.

Actually this is likely an age-old JAWS problem that's been around since
version 3, 4, or 5. Occasionally a key gets "stuck" electronically (not
mechanically) and it adds to other key combinations and results in either
nothing happening or unexpected results. The age-old solution is to rapidly tap
each pair of keys several times each -- the pair of control keys, the pair of
alt keys, the pair of shift keys, and the pair of windows keys.
Usually this resolves the problem

It's never been fixed, so it will happen in JAWS 16 and any version of Windows.

[JAWS-Users] Using tabs/tables

2015-03-23 Thread Reed Poynter
Hello,

I'm using Windows 7, Word 2010 and JAWS 16.

I have received a Word document where the author has used tab stops to
create columns of numbers.

I'm having difficulty determining in which column the numbers appear.

Can JAWS help me with this?

I'm wondering if I had these numbers in an actual table, if I'd be able to
be more successful in reading and understanding the data.

So, is there a way to convert this tab-stopped formatted doc to a table?

Comments?

Thanks,

Hi Annette,

Under File/Options, there is a Search tab where you can change this.
So, when you'r in your folder of messages:
hit Alt-F followed by T,
Hit right-arrow 6 times to land on Search,
Hit Tab 2 times to land on "current Folder...",
Hit down-arrow to change it to "All Folders",
Hit tab and check other options and the OK button.
At least this is what happens for me.

Re: [JAWS-Users] problem with excel

2015-02-11 Thread Reed poynter
Hello,

I have just resolved an issue where JAWS was not reading the contents of a
cell.
I am using Windows 7, Excel 2010 and the latest version of JAWS 16.

In my spreadsheet, column C and D contain dollar amounts.
When I was moving left to column C, JAWS was reading the cell contents
correctly.
When I moved over to column D, JAWS was saying "blank".
I checked all of my JAWS settings, which are correct.
"now, what the hell is JAWS doing wrong this time?, said I.

I finally asked my wife what was going on.
She reported that the values of column D were showing in the formula bar at the
top of the spreadsheet.
But, because the width of column D was 1 character, nothing was showing in the
cell.
I selected the entire column and AutoFit it.
"hey, it works!".
And, no, I have no idea how I got column D to be just 1 character wide.

So, it isn't always JAWS that is screwing up.

However, I am having another problem with JAWS 16 and Excel 2010 which I may
write about in another post.

Hello Dwight,

To change the format of a cell to a number without a decimal point you can use
CTRL+Shift+Tilde. You might need to use the JAWS pass through command first,
which is the JAWS key with the number 3. (Use the number three that is above
the E and not the one on the number pad). Try it without the pass through
first but my system must be using that keystroke for something else and I need
to use the pass through command. To change the format of a cell to a number
format that uses two decimal places, a thousand separator and a minus sign when
applicable use CTRL+Shift+! (that is the control key with the shift key and the
number 1)

If you need to select a range to apply the formatting to then you can use
CTRL+G and type in the first and last cell to be included in the range
separated by a colon. For example, A7:g12 will select cells starting with a7
and ending with g12 once you press the enter key. You can then use the
keystroke to apply the number format you want. If you want a different
numbering format then use CTRL+1 and use the formatting dialog box to make your
change.

Take care.

Jaws can be set to read the cells in many ways. There are specific settings
in the Quick Settings section.

1. While focused on Excel, press INSERT+V to open the Quick Settings dialog.
2. Arrow down to the beginning of the texdt or use the Search window and type
something like "read cell contents".
3. The easiest way is to press the letter T twice. That takes you to a
setting indicating that Jaws should read the cell contents.
4. Now use first letter navigation C, pressed twice.
5. You will be in the settings for cells. Here's the great part of Quick
Settings. If you aren't sure, just highlight a setting, then tab over and
there will be a text box explaining what each setting does. The text
explanations change, depending on which parameter you have highlighted
currently. Before doing anything, look through these.
6. You can try a change, make a note of it and then if you don't like the
results, open up Quick Settings again and try another setting.

Excel settings for Jaws are quite extensive. I suggest you figure out what you
want to do and then try to find the setting that makes Jaws do that. Reading
cell contents is one of those settings. You can also have Jaws read the column
or row settings in Excel but that's for another message.

Could you please elaborate a little on "Excel does not read the cells properly

excel window needs to be maximized is all.

Reed,

Not sure you'll find something like that. Problem is in getting tabular
information defined in the PDF document well enough to be broken into the
rows/columns in Excel.

You might do well to have the PDF file first saved as an MS-Word file. Then
in MS Word, munch the data so that it's either a single columns of items and

create a table, or make corrections in a table already generated.

Then, you can import that MS Word table directly into Excel.

This is becoming quite annoying. When I try to read the local paper sometimes
jaws starts reading the html code for the article. It may be 6 or
7 pages that I have to try and get through to find the story.
Does this happen to anyone else and how can I prevent it. I am using latest
jaws, win 7 32 bit.
