Good morning list.

I am presently running Skype 3.80180, think I downloaded it some time last
spring.

I have another update message today, wondered about the advantages and
more,

what about scripts. What I have now are scripts for 3.5 and while they do
give pretty good access, Skype remains an awkward programme for the
occasional user as I am.

What ever the case, I am interested in hearing about preferred versions
and
their appropriate scripts. I suppose Freedom Scientific doesn't follow
Skype
because of the rapid change history, I would guess that Skype is amount
the

most widely used programmes by the blind and if their numbers are accurate
there are millions on line at pretty well any time I look.

Thanks.

key stroke was too use the enter key, then using the altkey with the down

Hi,
I am testing a web site for accessibility using JAWS 9.0.

It is a secure site.

On the sign-in page, there are several links. When I pull up the links
list with insert-F7, they display correctly.

Once I enter my username and am transferred to the page where I need to
enter my password, the links are no longer spoken when I enter the list.
This behavior continues throughout the entire site from then on.

I would like to inform the developers of this problem and suggest a
reason. Does anyone know why this would be happening?

Thanks,
Erin

got help on skype from Michelle barbis with this
he talked me through it on skype

re clock got it sorted now
i could adjust the time and year but the date and month were together and if
i went to alter the date the month followed but jaws did not speak this

so i ended up with 29 august and 29 September
someone on jaws uk gave me assistance and now clock is correct and posts i

hi Yvonne

to answer the jaws verbosity question, I copied this answer from jaws help
pages. I suggest you go in to jaws help and read up about jaws and various
settings. this will explain things much better than I can.

There are three levels of verbosity: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced.
The beginner level provides the maximum amount of information spoken, while
intermediate and advanced levels provide fewer details.

To customize your own settings for any one of these levels, open the
Configuration Manager and go to the Verbosity Preferences under Verbosity
Options in the Set Options menu.

to answer your Skype question, you can get an add on program called Skype
watch which I'm told will alert you when your contacts sign in or out etc.

you can also go in to options, sounds and have Skype play certain sounds for
various actions such as contacts signing in or out etc.

go to the tools menu, hit the letter O for options.

here you have lots of options you can change.

to answer your question regarding the clock.

from your start menu, go to the control panel, then to time and date.

here you have edit spin boxes for changing the day, month, year, etc.

these edit boxes you can either type in the numbers or arrow up or down to
get the correct figure.

tab between the various options.

not entirely sure why you cant change the month though.

if the number do not change when you arrow to them, open the box with insert
down arrow and see if that helps. if you use that command remember to close
the box with insert up arrow.

hope this helps.

Elaine

ok, that is the temporary way. sometimes it's program specific and will
stay set that way, and others it wont.

sounds like you'll have to set this in the configuration manager.

this is a bit more tricky if you aren't use to changing things in there.

hi Yvonne

the typing sound is enabled because you pressed insert (jaws key) and the
letter V for victor to get to jaws options.

this means you hear a sound each time you hit any key on the keyboard.
Personally speaking I think this item is miss ladled and gives the wrong
impression of what this item actually does.

this sound can be changed by hitting insert V, then the letter T to go to
the typing sound.

this is a toggle, which means you hit space bar on it and you will go
through different levels of sound the more times you hit spacebar.

for example, once on the typing sound item in the options list, hit space
bar once, it will give you options of non, level 1, level 2, level 3 and so
on.

each time the level goes up you will hear a typing sound grow louder.

for no sound, hit the space bar until jaws announces non.

once you are in this options list, if you tab over once after each item jaws
will tell you what that item does.

this is true for any program not just skype.

use insert H and insert W will tell you keyboard commands for any program
and also use insert F1 for further help and information.

I hope this helps you sort the typing sound out.

says forms field identify using. I want to change this option and have it
stay changed. The best way to do this it appears is through the JAWS
configuration manager. However I haven't been able to find it there. How do
I go about finding it?
Any help is appreciated.

God bless,
Mark

hi Yvonne

the typing sound is enabled because you pressed insert (jaws key) and the
letter V for victor to get to jaws options.

this means you hear a sound each time you hit any key on the keyboard.

Hi Darren,

I don't believe you're correct in that.

I believe the amount she would be able to get is around the 96000 to 9
dollar amount, based on my experience with real estate sales.

Keep in mind that this is assuming that her income, or, at least, the 1000
is only 33% of her net monthly income, or household income, otherwise no
normal bank will approve you.

One option you could go for is to check online with one of the major
commercial banks, as they will usually have a mortgage calculator on their
sites that are usually very Jaws friendly.

One place you might also try is HUD's website, as I believe they have a
mortgage calculator on their site, and it's accessible.

Another thing you may want to look for is HUD's programs for people with
disabilities, as they have tonnes of discounts and grants for people with
disabilities that you can apply for, and this will affect the amount of
mortgage you will pay every month, and lower the amount you will borrow
also.

Just something to look at to ease your burden.

hi Yvonne

yes, you can alter the punctuation for a specific program, or for all
programs.

Going on what you've said in previous emails, I think you would be best to
set it to default. this means all the programs you use will have the same
punctuation level.

of course you can change this setting if say for example, you are working in
word and are editing a file. in that instance you'd want punctuation spoken.

if you wish to change the punctuation per program you can use the same
insert V command to go to the options and press the letter P twice. or
until jaws announces punctuation.

Again like with the one in skype, this is a toggle command where you cycle
between none, some, most and all punctuation.

if you hit your space bar here, you will cycle through the options mentioned
above.

mine is usually set to most. I very rarely set it to all as then it is
really annoying. but then I've been using jaws for over 15 years so too much
chattering of jaws is well...annoying lol.

there is a more permanent way of changing punctuation of course. but this
will get you started for now.

you can do this per program if you wish, or I can help you set them all to
default.

can I ask if you are a new jaws user?

if I can help you out further, don't hesitate to ask.

word and are editing a file. in that instance you'd want punctuation spoken.

if you wish to change the punctuation per program you can use the same
insert V command to go to the options and press the letter P twice. or
until jaws announces punctuation.

Again like with the one in skype, this is a toggle command where you cycle
between none, some, most and all punctuation.

if you hit your space bar here, you will cycle through the options mentioned
above.

mine is usually set to most. I very rarely set it to all as then it is
really annoying. but then I've been using jaws for over 15 years so too much
chattering of jaws is well...annoying lol.

there is a more permanent way of changing punctuation of course. but this
will get you started for now.

you can do this per program if you wish, or I can help you set them all to
default.

can I ask if you are a new jaws user?

if I can help you out further, don't hesitate to ask.

now when i press enter to call someone i only need to press it once
Chris holdsworth has given me another method i used the left bracket and
enter key with help from the space bar
but i pose you one more question
jaws announces every punctuation under the sun
it announces comma's semi colon's and even more annoying when reading emails
it says greater more than i can handle
if s there somewhere in where i jus been to stop this

I tested it out with skype that's how I know what you've done. *smiles*

Hi Yvonne,
Please initiate a new subject line,
the question you are asking has nothing to do with Jaws not loading at
startup.
Now if the question you are asking is answered, noone would be able to
find

it,
in the list archives because it doesn't have it's own subject line.

David has done an excewllent audio tutorial for Image for windows, but I
can't remember the link just now.
He explains step by step how to make a backup and how to restore from
it.

Exellent job.

Gerald Levy said the following on 15.05.2009 14:58:

Greetings all. I would like to create a backup copy of my C drive and
save it to an external hard drive (preferably a USB-powered portable
hard
drive) so that I would be able to perform a complete system restore in
the event of a catastrophic computer failure. Can this be accomplished
using the Windows Backup utility that comes with XP Pro? Or are there
any other free, JAWS-friendly programs that would be better suited for
this purpose? And are there any tutorials that explain how to perform
a

complete system backup and restore using one of these programs? Thanks
for any advice or suggestions.

David has done an excewllent audio tutorial for Image for windows, but
I
can't remember the link just now.
He explains step by step how to make a backup and how to restore from
it.
Exellent job.

Gerald Levy said the following on 15.05.2009 14:58:
Greetings all. I would like to create a backup copy of my C drive
and

save it to an external hard drive (preferably a USB-powered portable
hard
drive) so that I would be able to perform a complete system restore
in

the event of a catastrophic computer failure. Can this be
accomplished
using the Windows Backup utility that comes with XP Pro? Or are
there
any other free, JAWS-friendly programs that would be better suited
for
this purpose? And are there any tutorials that explain how to
perform

a
complete system backup and restore using one of these programs?
Thanks
for any advice or suggestions.

David,

I can see the advantages of combining the two list, but to be honest,
I hope that you will keep them separate.

I think that the Jaws Users site should be used only for Jaws related
questions while the Blind Computing site should be used for helping
us blind folks with general computer questions.

Just my opinion. Thanks for you and the management team for the fine work.

In my experience, the Windows Mail program is almost exactly the same as
Outlook Express. The major differences are the Contacts are now stored
separately, and there is filtering of Junk Mail. To my knowledge, the

I have one additional step to add to the steps for adding a new mail

that I found very helpful. I found it on an OE advice website.
I was having a lot of trouble since I have quite a few rules set up and
things were ending up in weird folders.
This really helped.
After the following step in the list below

specified folder. Again, press the space bar one time.

Addition to this step:
Use the arrow key to move down the list and also press space bar on
Stop

processing rules.
This causes Oe to put the particular email immediately into the named

folder

and not to continue down the list of rules looking for others that might
apply.

Then go and follow the steps that were given before.
I also make sure these are near the top of the list so that they will be
processed first.

If you only have one or two rules this might not be necessary but I have

15

rules so far so it really helps.

Hi Rich,

First open each of your Jaws folders and move the messages into your In

Box.

After all of your messages are in your In Box highlight each folder and
delete it except for one. This is the folder you are going
to import your messages into. I have tweaked Making Message Rules a

Hi listers,
my buddy can only have chats using this chat otion straight from her yahoo
classic mail account. So I downloaded yahoo messenger and also made sure I
installed version 7.0 which is supposed to work with my jaws 7.10. so far
so

good.
When I now hear the pling sound that someone wrote and focus on the window
it does not auto speak the last message. I did figure out that I can press
f2 to get the very last message read. But is there a way that I can also
keep reading older previous messages in that window?
I know that in windows live all I have to do is hit alt+ 1, 2, and so on
to

get to the older messages but is there a command like this for yahoo as
well? Also is there a tutorial for all the key commads available that will
work with yahoo?
Again my jaws that I am using is 7.10, with windows xp. Yahoo version is
7.0.
Thanks in advance
Regards
chrissy

but

as is the case with earlier versions, you will not lose any of your

anything just from the upgrade. Some users have returned to version 7
because of difficulties too numerous to mention. marilyn

Yvonne, I gather that you want to understand adding to favorites, right?
It

means that when you are in internet and you are on a web site you want to
remember, you can addit to your favorites list.Since you know where that
add
to favorites is, go there and enter on add to favorites. Then tab to ok
and

enter. marilyn

Hi Yvonne,
If you are not sure if your post is on-topic for the list, then ask the
management team before posting.
In this case, your post is on topic.
As for the users groups, I'm not really sure,
but as for the e-maiol sound, try this:

Outlook Express, the email program, was not upgraded past version 6.2900
whatever. Windows Update automatically updates programs that need to be
updated (with critical updates). other updates are called recommended
updates and can be found on the windows update Web page. There, Windows
update examines your system and then presents a list of suitable available
updates.

Yvonne,

If you received the message back, even when no-one replied to it, this
means
that your address from which you emailed it is subscribed to the list.
You

need to unsubscribe the address you don't want for the list. For
instructions, go down to the bottom of all of this and go to the relevant
url. For the record, there was another test message from you last night
to

the list. Many lists members do not reply to test messages.

[JAWS-Users] problems since phone instalation

2009-05-02 Thread Yvonne Oliver

hello i have a problem with the computer since purchasing a new phone.
it may not be fully related with the jaws users group but it does involve
jaws a little
i have a v o i p internet telephone account and bought a new dual band
cordless phone.

it is for u k fixed line and internet calls
but since installing it i have run into this little problem
when it is plugged into the fixed line socket we have here in the u k i can
make calls but don't get a dialling tone unless i go up one level with the
navigation button.
but the worst is when i plug in the u s b lead the speakers cut out and i
hear no sound from the computer speakers and of course this means i cant
hear jaws
and of course even though the phone is plugged in to the u k line socket all
calls made and received are for the internet number

anyone able to assist?
if it helps i am with Vonage as my internet calls provider
thanks
Yvonne
