Re: [JAWS-Users] Viewing/printing a document created in Pages on a Windows machine
If what she sent is a Pages document, she could export it for you as a Word file and then send it as such. Why might she have double zipped it, is it huge? Here are directions for her to give it back in Word. Microsoft Word will not open a document created in pages. You can however create a document in Pages then convert it to a Word document. After you create the document in Pages, go to file - export to - and select Word and it will change the document so that it can be read and opened with Microsoft Word. Well, I admit I am a bit stumped, and I have a deadline to meet/lots of things to do this weekend, so I come to the list to see if anyone here can offer any solutions. I sent my landlord a MS word document for her to look over and edit, in preparation for a mutual signing. She has sent it back to me for printing. But, not as a Word document. She sent me a zip file within a zip file, which turns out to be something created using the Apple program Pages. After some annoying poking around in this new archive folder, I have determined that the data I am after is in an xml (apparently) file called index.xml.gz, which I then had to use Winrar to open. Now I have my stuff, but there's no formatting except for code. What the devil can I do with this thing? Can I convert it to an easily printable format? I don't think I really need to edit it anymore. However, it doesn't even seem to open properly in my web browser (either Firefox or IE, at least). Any suggestions? Is therea quick, reliable converter out there I can use? Or should I just ask her to please convert back to the original format, as apparently Pages saves by default in its own format even if it wasn't in that format to begin with. For all I know, new versions of mS word can deal with these things, but I only have Office 2010 on here. Any thoughts? Re: [JAWS-Users] how do I attach a document to an email in Outlook 2016
Miriam. Another approach would be to create your email including the send to and subject fields and then write your message. At the bottom of your message on a blank line press the Alt key. and right arrow right once or until you here Insert. Down arrow once and you will hear "include grouping attach file. Press enter. A window will open with a list of files that have been recently open. This list includes any file that you have recently edited and it may also contain files you have recently saved such as an attachment someone has sent you. It the file appears in that list, highlight it and press enter. The attachment is in your message at the place where your cursor was sitting. That is why it is good to be on a lank line. That avoids putting the attachment somewhere like the middle of a line of text. Is the file you wanted not in that list? Arrow to the bottom of the list and the last entry will be "Browse this computer." Press enter and brows away. When you find the file you want press enter on that file . It is now attached. Part of the reason that I like this approach is that most often I want to send a file on which I have recently worked. The list of recent files keeps me from having to navigate through folders and sub folders to find that file. Even if I have to use the "browse this computer" approach, I won't have to do the copy and paste steps. Once I have found that desired file, pressing enter on it makes it an attachment. I am happy to answer any questions. Good luck. Re: [JAWS-Users] web CAPTCHA
My audio solution has become this. Open a word document and then listen to the audio and type what I hear. Being a tiny bit older than some on the list, I just try for 3 or 4 numbers or letters at a time. Then I have it repeated until I have the solution entered in Word. Then I copy and paste the results into the field and most of the time, I get it correct on one or two tries. The structure of the audio CAPTCHs is such that you have to click to start the audio and then jump into the solution field and type. This makes me hurry and I too often goof. Just be sure that when you go back to activate the repeat button that you don't press "get a new challenge." I still think that we could come up with a better CAPTCH structure. Re: [JAWS-Users] web CAPTCHA
The text and background is intentionally done as Dave said. It is meant to make it impossible to be recognized by OCR. I have heard a few audio CAPTCHs that, without distortion, would say something like "Jim had two cows and a horse. He sold a cow. How many horses were left? "This example is overly simplistic, still there are better ways to prove your humanness than the current tests. As someone with both vision and hearing limitations, I hate all regular forms of CAPTCHAs. [JAWS-Users] Making Power Point talk again

James, I would join George and add one suggestion. If you have access to Bookshare, there are many books about Microsoft products for users. I did a quick search, and though there are none specifically for Office 16 products, there are a number for version 13 including ones that cover Outlook. There are always some changes in newer version, but think books on the previous iteration would provide a good starting point. Outlook in general and 2016 in particular is a very powerful email, calendar, projects, notes etc. program. The rule of thumb with computer programs is the more powerful the longer the learning curve and less "friendly." There are a lot of very smart & experienced people on this list but none of them can give you more than a quick start with Outlook. You are going to have to spend some money for tutoring or spend some quality time with Mr. Google researching like the rest of us did & still do. For instance a recommended Google search, "Outlook 2016 adding a contact" or "Outlook 2016 adding a folder" You will find very good answers with this type of search and many times they are written by Microsoft Software Engineers. Re: [JAWS-Users] PDF ocr converter
Morning, I have been using Abby Finereader 11 for longer than I can remember. It, 11, is no longer sold, and I was just looking as I am thinking to upgrade to version 14. The software is wonderful at converting PDF to Word and other file formats like Word and Excel. The interface of 11 is very accessible. One little feature I like is that Finereader places an item in the context menu letting you select what the software should do with a file. Example, if the file is Called JAW.PDF, right clicking the file or using the context key will show a Finereader choice and then a submenu of file formats you can choose from. The engine is very accurate even when the file is an image. I just want to be clear that I have been using version 11 an not 14. There may be a trial version out there to be sure the program is still as screen reader friendly as 11. Re: [JAWS-Users] Firefox Quantum is coming, and it doesn't like screen-readers
Hi all, Below is a link to an article appearing on Marco's Accessibility Blog in September of this year that discusses the changes in architecture that will impact on screen readers. A bit heavy reading but it makes it pretty clear that we AT users are likely to find some big bumps coming our way for a while. Love to hear interpretations and assessments from more tech minded folks on the list. Rick https://www.marcozehe.de/ -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of JM Casey Sent: Wednesday, October 25, 2017 5:57 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Firefox Quantum is coming, and it doesn't like screen-readers So.. Has anyone Hey folks. Haven't seen any discussion about this yet. On another list, someone posted an article about this, which I cannot seem to find the URL for, but if people are interested I guess I could cross-post it. In brief: Firefox Quantum has a new "multiprocessing" approach that means it will be twice as fast for everyone else, but it will not play nicely with JAWS or other screen-readers. We're essentially at the same stage now (or will be come November) as we are with Edge, in that it's going to be a work in progress for quite some time, and from what I've read, it may be difficult to continue implementing the virtual buffer concept. This is, to me, annoying to say the least, as I use Firefox all the time and have been really happy with it up til now. I also think the virutal buffer a great innovation for web browsing and would hate to give it up, unless a better alternative was developed. Has anyone thoughts on this? I used to laugh at "old people" (in quotes there, in case you have punctuation set to "some" or "none") who moaned about things changing too fast and that they couldn't keep up. Now, at 37, I'm feeling the bite. I'm happy to no longer be using Windows XP, yet it seems like every month (since getting Windows 10 and JAWS 18 in particular), there's some new thing I have to fix that wasn't broken before; some time I have to spend figuring a workaround to one thing or another, or a doomful press release about how I won't be able to use this-or-that once a certain update happens. Fortunately, for us Firefox users, I guess we can still install the ESR (Extended Support Release) of the browser, and get security updates, without a Quantum upgrade, until sometime in 2018. Guess I'll be doing that, then!
