You know, this is very nice for organizations. But how about those of us
who have shelled out the $900 for the program? How about doing a little
something for us, too? $900 is a lot of money for us, the unemployed or
retired or for those who simply can't afford that much. Just saying.

Hi JAWS User List,

Just wanted to jump in and explain more about this opportunity. In
addition to the national trade shows, it's also something that is
available for anyone in the United States or Canada who is working at
an organization that owns a current version multiuser license JAWS,
Fusion, or ZoomText license. We call this the Home Use Program and
it’s a great deal that thousands of users currently take advantage of
today. Modeled after the "Microsoft User at Home Program" where
employees at very large organizations who own a certain level of
office products, employees can buy the subscription for home for
about $10 per year.

For Freedom Scientific products, we offer prices for a new Home
Edition License of JAWS for just $125, regular price is $900. Fusion
Home Edition is just $150, regular price is $1200. ZoomText is just
$100.
Upgrades from real old versions is also greatly reduced, and you can
get the SMAs discounted about 20%. Plus, once you are registered in
the system under the Home Use Program, you are entitled to a 20%
discount on hardware products, which can be a huge savings on
something like a $2500 Braille Display, where you can save up to $500.

If you work for an organization that has a multiuser license of any
of the Freedom Scientific or AiSquared products, please ask someone
there about the program. It cost them nothing to participate other
than having their license up to date. And the employees do the
purchases direct with Freedom Scientific so they are not involved in
the transaction.

Most Federal and State agencies are already in it but hundreds of
companies and organizations are already signed up.

Eric

Hi.

Dell inspiron 1100 notebook appears to be one that had a 32 bit
processor. Are you running the 32 bit JAWS installer? If so, then it
would be a bug where the 32 bit installer is mistakenly trying to
install a 64 bit component. It installed successfully under the 32 bit
platform on my Elbraille, though so if it's a bug it's not affecting all
of the 32 bit machines.

What's New:

Enhancements in JAWS 17.0.1214 (November 2015)

The following is a list of improvements made between the initial JAWS 17
release and the November 2015 update.

Smart Navigation
list of 6 items
• When INSERT+X is used to toggle Smart Navigation, the JAWS focus now
remains at the location on the web page where you performed the toggle.
• The command to temporarily toggle Smart Navigation (INSERT+X) can now be
found using the JAWS Command Search feature (INSERT+SPACEBAR, J).
• Resolved an issue where JAWS was not reading list items on certain web
pages when using Smart Navigation.
• Addressed a reported issue with the commands to read from the beginning
of

the line to the cursor (INSERT+HOME) and from the cursor to the end of the
line (INSERT+PAGE UP) not working in a table cell when using Smart
Navigation.
• When using the V and SHIFT+V Navigation Quick Keys to move to the next
or
previous visited link, resolved an issue where all links on the current
line
were being read instead of the specific visited link if Smart Navigation
was

active.
• Addressed an issue where many blank lines were appearing on some web
pages

with Smart Navigation active.
list end

JAWS
list of 12 items
• Addressed an issue with the Amazon Product Search Research It lookup
source not returning results as expected.
• Addressed an issue with symbols not being read as expected when inserted
into a document using the Select a Symbol to Print dialog box (INSERT+4).
• In response to customer feedback, the folder path for the Explore
Scripts

shortcut has been changed from C:\ProgramData\Freedom
Scientific\JAWS\17.0\Scripts\enu
to point to C:\ProgramData\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\17.0\Scripts.
• This update contains new drivers from HumanWare for the Brailiant BI
braille display in order to support Windows 10.
• If Active Follows Braille is not enabled, addressed issues where the
braille display would not move away from the structured line when panning,
or using
the commands to move the braille cursor to the next or prior line (RIGHT
ROCKER BAR on Focus Blue braille displays).
• When entering text from the Perkins-style keyboard on a braille display
using Unified English Braille (UEB) or another form of Contracted English
Braille,
resolved an issue where contracted words beginning with dots 4-5-6, such
as

spirit, many, world, etc., were not appearing correctly in documents. The
dots
4-5-6 portion of the word was being dropped when the word was
back-translated.
• When verbosity for Braille Flash messages is set to Advanced, resolved
customer reported issues where "sts" messages were being shown on the
braille
display even when the option to display status information was turned off.
In addition, the flash messages for the INSERT+T and INSERT+Q commands now
display
the short message as expected instead of the long message.
• If the JAWS cursor is configured to follow the PC Cursor using the
CTRL+INSERT+NUM PAD Minus command, an issue was resolved where JAWS was
not

reading
as expected when moving between applications with ALT+TAB.
• Addressed an issue with JAWS not correctly identifying the factorial
symbol in MathML content.
• If you perform a two-finger double tap to open a context menu while text
selection is active, the flick gestures will now work as expected to
navigate
through the menu items. Text selection is toggled by performing a triple
tap

with one finger.
• If you perform a five-finger tap to open the Run JAWS Manager dialog box
from an Internet Explorer window, addressed an issue where you could not
use

touch gestures to navigate this dialog box.
• To address potential issues, changes have been made to the process of
compiling scripts so they are compatible with versions of JAWS prior to
17.

The
Compatibility Mode option has been removed from Script Manager and the –c
command line switch has been removed from scompile.exe. To compile scripts
that
will work with prior versions of JAWS, you must now insert the following
line without the quotes into your JSS file: ";#pragma usePoFile 0"
list end

Adobe Acrobat
list of 1 items
• Resolved an issue reported by Adobe where labels for check boxes in PDF
documents were being read twice in the virtual buffer.

Microsoft Excel

• In Windows 8.1, resolved an issue where the backstage view in Excel 2013

Hi howard,
Great job.
here are some tips on customizing w-10, now that you have installed it.
I have added a few things.
Customizing w-10 with Jaws.
After reinstalling Jaws 16 or 17, I would check the following areas on the
windows 10 computer.

First of all, I would check my default programs.
windows key+I, Open settings.
You are in a horizontal list of 9 items, use your right and left arrow
keys to move across the items.

enter on system, arrow down to default apps and press enter.
Tab across this window, look for the browser which by default is Microsoft
edge.
Press the spacebar on the edge, tab to IE, press the spacebar, this will
set IE as your default browser.
Do the same thing with the different defaults programs, for example email
clients.
Tab to email default, press the spacebar on it, tab to the email client
you wish to use, and press spacebar, to set as default.
Here is how you Turn off all of the background apps you will not be using,
all are on by default.

windows key+I, go to privacy and press enter.
Go down to back ground apps and press enter.
Tab across and uncheck most of these apps.
Each time you uncheck one of them it will kick you back to the home
button, just tab back to the next app in the list, make your choice to
leave it on or turn it off.
The next thing you want to do is go to the Windows update and change the
following.

Press Windows key+I, go to update and security and press enter.
Tab to advanced options and press enter.
Tab four times too, choose how your updates are delivered and press enter.
Make sure when you tab that this sharing feature called, Let other
computers send me updates is turned off, and let my computer send updates
to other computers is also turned off.

this will effect your computers speed and performance, especially in IE.
Microsoft leaves all these back ground things on by default.
Next area you want to check is your live tiles region.
Press enter on the start button, down arrow to your apps, right and left,
up and down arrow around in them.
Press the application key on the highlighted app, you will have different
choices.

For example:
Turn off live tile, if you are not using them I would turn them off.
After turning the live tiles off, Press the application key again, Go down
to Unpin from start, press enter, this will remove them from the start
list region.
You can also resize them, press the application key, go to the resize sub
menu and choose, small, medium, and large which is wide.

Next, if you want to uninstall an unwanted app on your computer.
Press enter on the start button.
Up arrow to , All Apps, press enter.
Down arrow through the list of apps, if you find one you wish to
uninstall.
Press the applications key, down arrow to uninstall and press enter, press
the spacebar to confirm.
Many of these apps are built into the w-10 system, you will not be able to
uninstall them.
Next, You want to turn this setting off, unless you want your computer
sending a lot of information to Microsoft.

Press Windows key+I, open settings.
Go to Privacy, press enter.
go down to Speech, inking, and typing, press enter.
Make sure that it says, getting to know me, and not stop getting to know
me.
If it says, stop getting to know me, just press the spacebar to change it
back to getting to know me.

all these things combined will slow down your computer.
I hope this helps...

Please let me know how your upgrade goes using Microsoft windows update

I have heard and experienced, that using the Windows update way, is very

Sinse, you have already upgraded a computer using the Microsoft creation

but I'll be installing win10 directly from my sys tray since I already

it's just sitting in my windows update waiting for me to start the

I will do it sometime on monday.
I did use the windows on my 2-in-1 netbook and it did work perfectly.
I do have the win utility tool on a flash drive for when I eventually
install win10 on my dell laptop sometime in the future.
I will save this info for future reference, though.

p.s. yes, I will uninstall both jaws versions and shared components.

Hi Howard,
Yes, I would reinstall Jaws 17 after upgrading to w-10.
Just in case you need some reminders of upgrading to windows 10.
*Upgrading to Windows 10 with jaws 16 or 17.
go to:
http://www.freedomscientific.com/Support/TechnicalSupport/Windows10Upgrade
Download the tool called utility tool, leave it in your download folder.
Download jaws 16.0.4350, leave it in your download folder for future use.
Download the Microsoft media creation tool at:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
On this web page, Go to download link now 64 bit version or 32 bit
version depending on what system you have.

Download the tool and save it to your download folder for future use.
Leave all three of these downloads in your download folder.
Now, if you have not reserved windows 10, please do so.
press enter on the get windows 10 icon in the notification area.
go down the page and fill in your email address ext. this gives you a
verification email.

Now, restart your computer.
check for updates, install any updates, restart to make sure you have all
the latest updates.

Now you are ready to begin the upgrade to windows 10.
Run the jaws utility tool, this will get rid of any jaws fragmented files
and so on from your system.

Run the media creation tool.
yes, for your users account warning.
Choose, update this computer now and press enter.
you are now in an ongoing and updating dialog which says:
Windows 10 is being downloaded, continue using your computer.
This could take anywhere between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your
download speed.
When it is done downloading, it will go through several screens itself
updating your computer and will get it ready for windows 10.
Next, there will be a screen asking you to except the license agreement,
check the yes and press enter on next.

Again, the program will run through several screens by itself.
Next, press enter on install.
now you will have no speech, this install takes 45 to 60 minutes to
complete.

After 1 hour, press the Windows key+enter key to turn on narrator.
Wait for a few minutes if it does not come on right away.
Almost done.
press the next button.
choose express settings.
press the next button.
if done right, in about 10 to 15 minutes, jaws will come on talking on
the desktop.

very important, uninstall jaws.
Keep shared settings and personal settings.
Reinstall jaws, no need for a restart here, jaws will come on talking
with all your settings, except for 2 of them.

Redo your shortcut key, control+ALT+j.
Redo the setting to have jaws come on at the log-on screen.
For whatever reason if the media tool fails the first time.
Check for updates, restart, and run the tool again.

hopefully you can fix the sports scores soon.
if history repeats itself, hockey, (the last holdout), will go the way of

after a couple of games or so, that's usually when ESPN breaks the code so

I haven't been able to use it for months. Using latest JAWS and IE 11.
Have deleted cookies. Haven't used amazon.com/access either.

A long time ago, I did click on the link that was supposed to provide
information about their screen reader changes. That was nothing but
talking about amazon.com/access. Wonder if that permanently "marked Me" as
a screen reader user, and, by default, locked me into amazon.com/access?
Don't think so, because I can still go to amazon.com.

Using windows 7 on a two year old Dell laptop.

Can the FS folks not get in touch with the amazon folks to explain the
difficulty? Surely FS can delve into the guts of the web design.

Greg,

Yes, that's why I use it, as well. It's an easy way to drill down to one
or
two specific product offerings, especially when the search term is vague
or

all-encompassing.

For example when I put in "APC UPS" to look for an uninterruptable power
source, I was given a list of 5 of their models, each with a different
power

capacity, along with pricing. Cant get much better than that unless you go
to a Tag It site or a comparison shopping site.

Gerald,
It's just a personal preference in my case. When I am looking for a
particular product on Amazon I like the uncluttered simple interface of
research it. It will list five products that match my search criteria
along

with the price and when I see one I am interested in I click on it and it
takes me to the item on Amazon's web site. I too use the amazon web site
often as well but it's nice to have the research option especially when I
am

in a hurry to get info on a particular product.

Could someone explain the advantages of using the Amazon.com option in
Research It versus visiting Amazon.com directly? Using JAWS 16 with
Windows

7, I have no trouble either navigating the Amazon.com site or making
purchases. And for those who find the regular Amazon.com site somewhat
cluttered or difficult to navigate, there is always the accessible version
which is optimized for screen readers. The trouble with Research It is
that

when a web site is modified, Research It often no longer works well with
that site, if at all. Although the Research It feature was useful and
convenient when it was originally introduced, many users are now reporting
problems with it, and FS should considerdropping it from future releases

JAWS.
