Re: [JAWS-Users] DECAccess 32 and JAWS 12 - WAS: Re: Jaws 10 Not Talking on Boot Up

2011-08-09 Thread Mike O'Brien
Hi Doris

I had never heard anything about JAWS 10 being the last release to support
Dectalk Access 32. I run the Dectalk Access 32 version from Freedom
Scientific. I originally got it shortly after it came out in JFW v2 or v3.
I have successfully used it in all subsequent versions of JAWS including V11
and V12 under Windows 98, NT, 2000 and XP. I downloaded a new version of
Dectalk Access 32 back in the late 90's from the Freedom Scientific download
page at
http://www.freedomscientific.com/downloads/jaws/JAWS-previous-downloads.asp
And installed it several years ago. Look for the link New Dectalk Access
32 on that page to find it. Although I tried it today and I got no response
from left or right clicking the link. I mostly run it from the Startup
group in the Start menu. Although recently I have been trying having it
start automatically.
In earlier versions of JAWS it seemed to me that JAWS was more responsive
and less choppy by running it from the Startup group rather than as a
service. But I really haven't noticed any difference between the two in the
latest JAWS release. I recently purchased a Netbook on which I did not want
an automatic logon to have JAWS after the Logon screen appears. So I
checked the box in Basic/Options to have JAWS start automatically for the
Logon Screen, which seems to take a long while after the logon screen
appears. I then created a DOS batch file that will stop the currently
running version of JAWS and start whatever version I specify. I have read
that GW Micro has dropped support for it. So although I haven't seen
anything about Freedom Scientific support, it wouldn't surprise me that it's
not supported by them either. The last technical Support Bulletins I have
seen on the Freedom Scientific support page about Dectalk Access 32 are for
it making OpenBook 8 crash on startup just because it is installed, and it
locking up JAWS under Windows Vista which mentions JAWS version 8.

Hi,

Which version of DEC Access 32 are you using with jaws 12? All I heard
before was that DEC Access 32 doesn't work with anything newer than jaws 10.
I researched that a while back and think I saw a message by someone saying
that FS no longer supported DECAccess 32.

I'd be very much intersted in hearing which version of DEC Access (i.e. the
k1k or GW Micro or FS or whichever version) you are using and with what
settings. Do you run DEC Access as a service or are you starting it via the
startup group?

Thanks much.

Doris

Doris and All,

I'm probably about as set as I'm going to be. JAWS 10 does not seem to
want to run as a service on this machine and at least now seems to be
coming up talking after system boot up. I tried copying the JAWS 10
icon on my desktop to my startup folder as a temporary solution as you
suggested and thought it had been successful to at least have J 10 come
up talking at some point. It wasn't doing it 100% of the time, though
and somehow, my efforts without sighted assistance available apparently
resulted in the OE menu bar being moved. I'd thought something was
blocking My Desktop and had planned on calling my tech for a remote
session anyway, but the new OE problem made that essential.

He didn't find anything blocking My Desktop, but I did see something
one time, but wasn't able to determine what it was. I vastly prefer
DEC-Talk Access 32 to Eloquence and another tech at his shop has seen
the screen I think is causing the problem and he thought it had
something to do with DEC-Talk Access 32, but hadn't heard of it and wasn't
sure.

The remote session with my tech got J10 talking after boot up and I had
to wait until this morning to call FS about the activation problem with
J9 because of threatened severe thunder storms.

The FS support guy thought the activation problem was weird, so
seemed to agree with all of us here about that. He thought
uninstalling JAWS 9 probably wouldn't cause J10 to decide it wanted to
be activated since it would then be the earliest version. He tried to
encourage me to uninstall JAWS 9 and 10. I didn't have any problem
uninstalling J9 as long as it didn't create more

i think the only reason it works for you is because you got it from fs. those
of us who got it from third party dealers will see that third party support
isn't included in jaws since jaws 10 original release.

Hi

In order to be able to use the FS version of Dectalk Access32, they had to
update the JAWS authorization to add this feature, the same as if adding the
Remote access feature. If your JAWS authorization has such an update, you
should be able to run the FS version of Dectalk Access 32. If it doesn't,
your explanation. Makes sense. To see if your authorization has this
feature, from the JAWSx/Tools menu in All Programs, run Ilm Authorization
Viewer. At the bottom of this listing is a section that starts with the
line Options. Under that line would be a line saying Dectalk Access32.
