and their review of AVG 8.0:

I personally do not use either, since I just bought a Dell laptop, which

AVG 7.5 on my kids computer to one of those soon though.

[JAWS-Users] FREE AVG ANTIVIRUS

2008-05-25 Thread Brian Lee
I thought some of you on the list might be interested in what I found about the
free AVG 8 antivirus program. If you go to www.free.grisoft.com and choose the
link for downloading the free version, you will be taken to a page where the
three versions of AVG are listed. It was quite surprising to me to find out
what the free basic version does not include. It does not include anti-rootkit
detection, it does not provide protection for instant messaging, it does not
screen downloads for malicious content, and it does not give real-time
protection from poisoned web pages. Below is the comparison of AVG Free, AVG
antivirus paid version, and the AVG Internet Security suite as shown on the

Re: [JAWS-Users] FREE AVG ANTIVIRUS

2008-05-25 Thread Brian Lee
Hello Carlene:

When checking ratings for programs some things to consider are when the
tests were done, who performed the tests, and what versions of the programs
were tested. I have read many recent reviews and found many lab tests by
organizations who rate the free versions of antivirus programs showing a
higher rating for the latest version of AVAST than the free AVG 8 and visa
versa. I recently read a CNET editor's review that gave AVAST a better
rating. One recent comparison test showed AVAST detecting 100% of viruses
in the wild. In fact, AVAST has improved their product and recent test
scores, and in some recent lab tests AVG 8 has not done as well. So, in
some tests AVG might be rated higher than AVAST, but in a lot of recent
tests that is not true.

One thing that does concern me about the free AVG version 8 antivirus
program is the lack of rootkit detection. The nature of rootkits make them
so that the usual auto detection part of an antivirus program can not detect
them. Without this protection a system is vulnerable to malicious programs
that act as normal Windows operating system files. AVG did have a free
anti-rootkit program that could be downloaded but I don't know if it is
still available. Also I am not sure it worked on Vista systems.

Take care
