I installed NVDA just out of interest but whilst it was running the usual insert f4 to quit Jaws would not work so I had both running. Is the only way to actually use NVDA to uncheck the start Jaws with windows option? I am just looking at this out of interest and because I am hoping to teach people the computer with a charity UCanDoIT and some of them may use NVDA is it a free programme? Are there many keystrokes to learn? I was interested by the accent as it sounds very English but a little like a darlic. NVDA is a completely free open source screen reader. I suggest creating a shortcut key to launch it so that you can first close JAWS using Insert-F4. It is not necessary to change any JAWS settings to use NVDA. Just close JAWS first, then launch NVDA using its shortcut key. You can create a shortcut key for NVDA by focusing on its desktop icon and pressing Alt-Enter to bring up the Properties dialog where you can assign the shortcut key of your choice, like for instance, Alt-Control-N. Once you launch NVDA, you can access the settings menus by pressing Insert-N. You can adjust the voice and synthesizer settings from these menus, so if you don't like the British voice, you can select a different one. Note that you have to use the dedicated cursor keys to navigate up and down through the menus; the numpad arrow keys will not work. To close NVDA, press Insert-Q. HTH. Hi all. Well I thought I could fix things, and now I have jaws so messed up that it won't talk during the installation. I know why because I uninstalled the elloquence and talking installer. and narrator which I'm using to write this, won't go into the registry so I can remove anything left over and do a complete reinstall. If anyone can help, at all, you have a life debt. If you have seen a message from myself like this already, I apologize. I haven't seen mine yet, so please excuse the double message, if there is one. Hi Sarah, Yes, she could, and now that I think of it, I don't know why I didn't recommend it to her in the first place. Narrator works well with the system restore utility. My only concern is that it might not be enough to simply restore the system. I once did a similar mistake, and uninstalled Jaws, along with every other component, and found that a system restore did not help me, as everything had been restored, as in settings, but the program hadn't, and so I had to completely re-install Jaws from scratch. In any case, yes, a system restore is feasible, and almost completely accessible with narrator. Hi everyone, it is fixed! A friend got me set up with system access, then I resotred to april fourth. I didn't end up needing nvdia but thanks very much. System restore in win vista anyway, doesn't really work with narrator well. I had probably sixty to choose from.
