Dear Brian,
Thank you for laying out the steps to left justify a header and write justify a page number on the same line. I am very glad that they worked. I am curious as to why there must be a nonbreaking space between the words of the header. I will now work on the table of contents.

Hello Chanelle,

There is a quick way to have a part of a line left-aligned and another part right-aligned whether working in a document pane or in a header/footer pane. First type the information that you want to be left-aligned in a blank header. However, do not use spaces between the words but instead use nonbreaking spaces. A nonbreaking space can be inserted using CTRL+shift+spacebar. Make sure there are no hard spaces between any of the words you want left-aligned. After typing the information that you want to be left-aligned using only nonbreaking spaces between the words, use a hard space. After the hard space insert your page field using the design tab on the ribbon. Do not use a space after the page field. Immediately after inserting the page field use CTRL+J. Immediately after using CTRL+J use a shift+enter command to force a line break. This procedure will left-align the title and right-align the page number field.

If you were right-aligning more than the page number field then you would also need to use nonbreaking spaces between words to be right-aligned.

Feel free to E-mail me if you need any further clerification.

To create a table of contents use Alt key followed by S followed by T. A list of choices will be presented. The automatic choices will build a table of contents based on headings 1 through 3 in your document. You should move the cursor to the point where you want the table of contents to be placed before creating it. If you don't want to use the automatic choices you can choose manual or the table of contents dialog box. The manual choice will insert fields to be filled in. The dialog box will give you options and allow you to choose different options. After creating the table of contents you might need to use CTRL+enter key to insert a page break, as the automatic tables are not kept on their own page.

Take care.

   Dear Jaws users,
I am trying to format a header in Word 2007 such that the abbreviated title is flush left and the page number is flush right. I am writing a paper in APA format. Is there a way to use Jaws to make sure that the heading and page number are placed correctly? I don't think that the control l and control r commands can be used on the same line. I have looked for instructions online, but it is hard to follow visual commands. I also need to create a table of contents in Word 2007. Are there any good free or low cost resources detailing how to complete more advanced editing tasks? I have looked through the Daisy files provided with Jaws, which were not helpful.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
   Thank you.
   Chanelle

After some investigating, I discovered the cause of my JAWS punctuation problem. I must have accidently pressed Insert-`, which is the IEMax keystroke for toggling between all punctuation and no punctuation. So I set the toggle to all punctuation, and everything is back to normal.

Hi Gerald;

The punctuation setting in verboscity and the punctuation settings in
customize punctuation in the configuration manager have 2 different
meanings. For example; In verboscity settings, these settings tell Jaws to
recognize All, Most, Some, or None for all punctuation. Whereas in the
configuration manager the settings work backwards of the berboscity
settings. The configuration manager settings tell Jaws to ignore All, Most,
Some, Or None of the individual punctuation settings depending on what
option you have chosen for each individual punctuation mark. Hope this
helps. Take care.

I unloaded my default JAWS 9, and launched my demo version of JAWS 10
which
does not have the IEMax scripts installed, and
the punctuation is fine. Interestingly, I notice when I close the
Configuration Manager in both JAWS 9 and JAWS 10 with Alt-F4, I don't get
the usual dialog prompt asking if you want to save the changes. So I
wonder
if there is a problem with the Configuration Manager.

Thanks for that explanation, Mike. But as I mentioned in my previous
message, the problem turned out to be inadvertently toggling the IEMax
punctuation command, Insert-` (the key to the left of the num row 1 key)
from all to none. So I simply toggled it back to all and everything is back
to normal. Which just goes to prove that you have to be careful when you
install scripts that have a lot of new or obscure keystrokes.
