Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws Research It
FS would better serve its customers by eliminating the Research It feature from future versions of JAWS. Constantly issuing fixes for Research It every time a web page layout changes is counter-productive, and detracts from the time FS's software development team can devote to more important issues. To be perfectly blunt, Research It does not enhance the basic functionality of JAWS and only makes it more bloated and prone to problems. Besides, all the information available through Research It can just as easily be found with a Google search. Oh sure, Research It is more convenient, but at what price? I am trying to convert different currencies with the AUS dollar but it would seem that the research it module in JFW 11.1471 doesn't work. I can get other information such as weather and people lookup. Does anybody has the same problem with currency conversion? Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws research it
Why not just add the link to your favorites list? Press ALT-A when on the link then enter and it is saved. You can also set up folders within your favorites to classify and/or organize your favorites to make it quicker and easier to find them. You could have a folder called say Technology and put the link in there. Internet Explorer will take you right to it each time. I even have a shortcut to my Favorites, ALT+CTRL+F (for favorites in case I can't remember) Hope this helps and you can again begin using your computer on the Web without waiting for your screen reader to be updated. I had thought there was a way to add your own lookup sources, though I never really looked into it. I could see how this could get pretty complicated. It would involve more than simply adding a uRL. So, this thread made me curious and I took a quick look. Indeed, it doesn't look as though there is any way to do this. It's a nice JAWS feature, but not really designed to be totally inclusive. You'll just have to use the normal web interface. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Mike B. Aha. I knew I had come across this somewhere. Or at least, I had a feeling. I read through lots of stuff on that website when I was going to get my JAWS certification, and just as happened sometimes at university, there was info overload and I just forgot some of it as soon as the temporary objective was achieved. Oh Yes, I understood every word of those instructions. Yeah right. Mr. Ed -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Mike B. Sent: Sunday, September 03, 2017 2:31 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws research it - changing options Howdy, Here's the document: Introduction to Creating Rule Sets for JAWS Research It Queries Introduction Research It is a query tool first introduced in JAWS 11 which makes it fast and simple to look up information using a predefined set of lookup modules. Thus, for example, one might wish quickly to look up the definition for a word encountered while reading an article without taking the time and trouble to visit an Internet website and search for the definition. Once the information is found, the user can rapidly return to the primary task with a single keystroke. This allows the user to find the needed information with a minimum amount of time and distraction. JAWS Research It can do this and other look up tasks, providing that a rule set has been created which tells JAWS where and how to find the information requested. At present JAWS ships with a number of predefined rule sets, but it is inevitable that users will want the ability to use Research It to find data that is not available using those predefined rule sets. It is the purpose of this document to provide a basic introduction to creating these rule sets so users with adequate programming background can learn the basic strategy for creating their own queries. We will discuss the two file types that comprise a rule set and describe what types of information are required in each. We will then discuss how desired information is found and extracted from a webpage, provide a very basic introduction to the programming tools used to find and extract that information, and give a couple of simple examples to illustrate these techniques. However, it is beyond the scope of this article to provide a comprehensive tutorial on how to program these queries. We will provide references to manuals and function libraries that should allow anyone with moderate to advanced programming knowledge to acquire the necessary tools. Such individuals should have little difficulty in expanding the introductory information presented here and learn how to create more complex queries. This article will probably not be very useful for that purpose to those with little or no programming knowledge. It is assumed that the reader has a solid understanding of how to use JAWS and at least some familiarity with how to invoke and use a Research It query. Those who do not should study the JAWS help system before proceeding with this article. Rule Sets A Research It rule set contains two files: a.. Rule File - This file contains the basic information needed to run the query and allow the user to interface with it in the JAWS Research It dialog. It uses the file extension .rul. b.. Query File - This file contains the program which accesses an Internet website, sends any query data to that site, locates the desired data, and returns it as a JAWS Research It result. It uses the file extension .qry. These two files must share a common name followed by one of these extensions. For example, a set might contain the files MyQuery.rul and MyQuery.qry. The Rule File The rule file will normally contain three or 4 entries: a.. Friendly Name - This is a string which is the title of the query the user will see in the JAWS Research It dialog. This is a required entry with a maximum length of 100 characters. b.. Description - This is a more detailed description of the query and is an optional string with a maximum length of 500 characters. It can contain any information which the developer feels will assist the user in using the query such as what the query does and the format for the input data. c.. Timeout - This is an integer defining the timeout in milliseconds that the query will wait to receive a response from the target website. Any query using this rule set will be aborted if it exceeds the timeout specified. The default timeout is 15000 milliseconds and will be used if no timeout value is specified. A longer timeout may be required if the Web site that is queried is slow, if a large amount of data is returned, or if the query is complicated. d.. Version - This optional entry contains the version information for the rule set. An example showing the structure of a typical rule set is shown below: [Details] FriendlyName=Area code lookup Description=Enter a three digit area code to find its location. Example: If you type in 416 and choose this lookup, it will report back Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Available for the United States and Canada only. Timeout=15000 Version=1.0.0 The query file, which performs the actual search, will be the subject of the remainder of this article. The Query File

Hahawell, yeah, the thing is that as neat a feature as an in-JAWS lookup extension seems to be, it's probably more trouble than it's worth to mess with it, for most people. Doesn't mean you shouldn't try. But when all you want to do is order something from amazonwell, the website is right there for everyone to use with Firefox or whatever. I personally love the dictionary lookup as primary because I can just put my cursor on a word, press insert-windows-r, and boom, there's the definition. That's great, and saves me the trouble of having to install and use another piece of software. The currency conversion is also pretty convenient. Everything else, well, I can just use the browser like most other people do. Like you, I use the currency converter and none of the other Research It features, preferring other ways of getting those answers. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of JM Casey Sent: Sunday, September 03, 2017 5:22 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws research it - changing options Hahawell, yeah, the thing is that as neat a feature as an in-JAWS lookup extension seems to be, it's probably more trouble than it's worth to mess with it, for most people. I still think it's cool that we have this feature and obviously everyone's different, and should use it as they wish. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Mr. Ed Sent: September 3, 2017 4:48 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws research it - changing options Oh Yes, I understood every word of those instructions. Rule Sets A Research It rule set cont

This level of dictionary helps you find a word on the tip of the tongue or confirms a word's commonly understood meaning. For anything more sophisticated, you go to the OED, etc. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of JM Casey Sent: Sunday, September 03, 2017 10:16 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws research it - changing options Yes, true, I think you will get etymology and such toothough the online etymology dictionary is probably the best source for that.
