Well, from what I've been able to tell, these antispyware programs have a database that they check through and if the same program shows up on your computer, it's marked as spyware and then gives you the opportunity to remove it after the scan. Yes, it can still be used. It will first ask you if you want to create a restore point, which I highly recommend. Then it will search your PC for programs that are normally considered to be unnecessary. Programs like, AOL, Norton, Sonic and other programs that companies pay PC distributors to include on their PC's. It will allow you to check or uncheck the programs you want to keep or remove. If after uninstalling one of the programs it tells you that you need to reboot in order for the program to be completely removed, choose reboot later.
