[JAWS-Users] Smartart

2012-08-06 Thread Ruchi Patil
Hi all,

I am a new member to the group, and am a mother of a 9 year old totally blind
bright kid. He has been a jaws user at various levels since the age of 4.

In school he needs to make several diagrams and I was trying to use smart art
for food cycle and pyramid diagram. I saw that it is pretty simple to create
these diagrams using keyboard commands, and happens really beautifully.

However, when I went to read the diagram, I found that jaws only said graphic
of size? Does any version of jaws support such smart art reading as in table
reading commands. Will jaws read as a food cycle- object 1 grass, object 2
rabbit, object 3 lion?? Was wondering since all data is available, since that's
how we created it in the first place.

Eager to hear from you.

Thanks and regards,
Ruchi

Hi,
To my knowledge, Jaws does not work with pictures. I tried using
paint once, just to find out if Jaws could do anything, but none
of these programs work. It would be good if Jaws could read
diagrams and anything else of that nature.

I tried using smartart for food chain diagrams and hierarchy diagrams and
organizational chart diagrams. Works reasonably well to create the diagrams,
however, while reading it reads as diagram size.

Why not get the available "raised line" drawing kit from American Printing
house for the blind. You can then do the drawing of the diagram and there
you go.

You would have to be able to label the graphics in such a way that JAWS can
get the label information, somewhat as it's done on web pages.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Smartart

2012-08-08 Thread Brian Lee

Hello Ruchi,

It is possible to read the pyramid and cycle smart art
with JAWS, albeit not easily or efficiently.
Here are a couple things you might try.
I am using Word 2010, JAWS 13 and Windows 7 64-bit so the following
information is for Word 2010.

If you move the PC cursor on to the object JAWS
identifies it as a slash. You can select
the object by using shift with right arrow key or by using CTRL+Shift+O to list
objects and then using up or down arrow key to the one you want and pressing
enter key. At this point you can add Alt
text so the object will be better identified when moving the cursor on to
it. If you want to do that then with the
object selected press the application key or shift with F10 to bring up the
context
menu. Arrow down to the "format text"
menu option and press enter key. Press
the letter A until you get to the Alt text choice. Use tab key to move to the
Title and
Description fields and fill them in. Tab
to OK and press spacebar. When you use
CTRL+Shift+O to list the objects and use arrow keys in the list you should hear
whatever you used as the description after adding the alternate text.

After selecting the object by either using shift with
right arrow or pressing enter on a choice in the list of objects obtained by
using CTRL+Shift+O, use the application key to bring up the context menu. Use
down arrow key to the menu item just
under the "change layout" item.
If it says "show text" then press enter key. If it says "hide text checked"
then
press enter key, press application key again without deselecting the object,
use down arrow key and the "show text" option should be
available. Press enter key.

Sometimes, focus will move directly into the text pane
but not very often. However, the text
pane is shown as a dialog. You might
need to route JAWS cursor to PC cursor, use down arrow until you hear the first
part of the list of items, and then simulate the left mouse button click on the
keyboard. Focus will then be in the
list. After turning PC cursor back on
you should then be able to use up and down arrow keys in the list of items and
the levels should be announced. The
first level is 0.

To dismiss the text pane use Alt with spacebar and choose
the Close menu item.

This seems quite complicated. Being that it is possible to move into the
text pane and hear the items read, I don't think that scripting and making the
process more efficient would be too difficult.
Perhaps even some VB code could be written to make it easier.

 Take care.

Eager to hear from you.
