Yes, I know-I learned the hard way. I have an old Asus and I bought one for my wife. In my book they are great. Just do FN key+f9 and it toggles the pad off and on. I think that somebody on the list said that something has to be changed in the bios and it requires sight. Wayne, I have an HP laptop for work and have not been able to find any way to turn off the touchpad. I actually taped a piece of cardboard over the touchpad so I wouldn't keep touching it accidentally. Not exactly an elegant solution, but it works. This is a huge drawback of HP laptops, imo, and the main reason I would never buy one for my personal use. it's most likely settings in word that are enabled to display those character symbols. maybe someone can help you turn it off since I don't have 2013.
