[JAWS-Users] Winzip V14.5 and JAWS
I received an offer to purchase version 14.5 of Winzip. Currently I use Winzip V9.0. JAWS works well with V9.0, using the JAWS cursor for some features. I have a notion from a statement in the offer that the user interface might be somewhat like the new Office ribbon concept. If the interface is similar to the Office ribbon concept, this change would not be a "show stopper" for me. Any first hand shared experience with version 14.5 of Winzip and JAWS version 11 would be appreciated. Re: [JAWS-Users] Winzip V14.5 and JAWS
Hello Gary, Short of WinZip handling more file types then it's previous versions, there is absolutely no change to the program, other then setting the wizard to come up all the time, if you choose that mode, but again, this is optional. There is also a ultimate super compression setting you can use with WinZip 14, however, if you're going to share archives zipped up in this super zip format, make sure the people you are sharing your zip file with have version 12 or higher, because older version don't recognize this super compression file it creates. Personally, I always use legacy compression, as this is the most compatible with most, if not all archiving programs out there. Just a warning. As I said before, this version is much more versatile than it's previous versions, especially since it can handle RAR files, and ISO files, and other Disc image files. I am using it myself, and I think it's great. I do use both WinZip, and WinRAR, for those pesky stubborn archives that give me problems, but I find that the two compliment each other, rather than interfere with each other. In any case, I think it's a great program, and well worth the investment. Scorpio For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Thank you very much for the feedback about Winzip version 14.5. Is WinRAR useful for file types that Winzip doesn't handle? It's late; otherwise, I would google WinRAR. Re: [JAWS-Users] Winzip V14.5 and JAWS
Hi, I find Winrar great. I think one thing worth noting is that all these compression utilities cannot be dismissed easily just as we do other applications. I mean you can not use one utility at the exclusion of the other: it is just a matter of knowing what kind of archives are you comfortable working with, taking into account your cronies and contacts' machines. This is because Winrar is good in areas like creating RAR formats: this cannot be done by any other utility. Of course, WinZip and 7zip plus a host of other archivers can open RAR formats. So if you are interested in creating RAR formats, Winrar is your application. On the other hand, just like what Scorpio indicated, if you are interested in creating ZIPX format (the new format supported by WinZip), no other utility can do that. I cannot enumerate the advantages of Zipx over the traditional Zip format, but suffice to state that I find this format more secure and reliable. If you wish to store files for your own consumption later, I urge you not to hesitate to invest in WinZip 14. The fact that you may have cronies who are not yet up to the latest gear shouldn't hinder you from investing in the latest app: just make sure to simply create a Zip archive for those people who are not using the latest WinZip program. So in short, it is a matter of preference: WinRar is my own personal preference and I fell in love with it since version 2.xx and I never regreted my decision: WinRar archives to me are compact and cannot be easily cracked by brute force programs. Just my thoughts: but I encourage you to go ahead and get WinZip 14 -- those ribbons are lovely and you will still be used to them as you did with Office 2007. If you can, simply get both utilities as they will be handy for different situations. Wish you all the best, Cheers, Ishe For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
Re: [JAWS-Users] Winzip V14.5 and JAWS
Hi Gary, Frankly, there aren't many, if any types of files that WinZip does not handle. To date, I haven't found any, in any case. As my friend also said, it's good to have both, if only because some people prefer to have one zip utility over another, but, having said that, if you're going to create an archive to share with others, then it's best to make a zip archive, instead of any other, like RAR or any of the others that WinZip supports, only because some people can't afford other programs like WinZip 14 or WinRAR, so they opt to go with the native zip extractor that comes with Windows XP Vista or Windows 7, which, I'm told does not handle other file types very well. Just a note on this, in case you were thinking that one zipping utility compresses better than the other. Hope this helps.
