[JAWS-Users] active desktop restore error message
Hello Listers A friend has the problem where, often, he gets a message that he must press on a restore button to restore his active desktop. Is this a JAWS thing or a Win XP thing? How does one get rid of this? Regards Fanus For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Hmm, I didn't know that but if the active desktop doesn't exist in vista it must be an XP thing, so how would you access it? Don't go around saying the world owes you a living. Re: [JAWS-Users] active desktop
Julie, I notice that you have been having this problem for quite a while. I have 2 suggestions, neither of which is particularly appealing but may be necessary. 1. Go to the Microsoft web site http://www.microsoft.com and in their Search field, type Active Desktop and then wait for the results. You'll get quite a bit of response. I know I did. 2. If absolutely necessary, you may have to re-load your Windows program. It sounds like you have a corrupted file which isn't allowing your Active Desktop to function. The Active Desktop as I understand it, combines features that we as visually impaired computer users don't normally worry about. The active Desktop sets up your view of the list of items in a specific way, adds whatever background you may have chosen and includes any changes you may have made to the titles on that display. That information is stored in a recoverable file. The purpose is to provide you with a working environment which is the same every time you open that list. Actually, the list on a desk top is links to the various programs you might need. They are not the actual program, just a set of directions which tells the computer where to go to link up with that particular choice. People tend to alter what the computer starts with by changing the title of the link. That is something which may be effected by your problem. I don't know which file is responsible for that configuration information. Maybe someone like Denny Huff might be able to help you there. If you do get help like that, just insert your original Windows disk and use the Find feature to locate the file. Then copy it into the appropriate folder on your main drive. Failing that, your only alternative would be to re-install Windows completely, an annoying and time consuming operation at best. But the advantage is a completely clean Windows system. I have had to do it. Before you begin, make sure that you save all of your document files to separate disks. Make sure that you have copies of all of your other programs like Jaws for example, your word processor and so on. Normally, they aren't effected by a re-installation like that but it's always best to be sure. Finally, if you have to re-install, make sure you have a copy of the code key in some alternative form: tape, Braille, digital recording, etc. At one point, you will be prompted for that information. Good luck Julie and I'm sincerely sorry no one has responded to you as of yet.
