Hi Stuart.

I am assuming you mean the software that comes with your printer and how
accessible it is with jaws? In the past when i've had access to epson
products, accessibility hasn't been bad, but hasn't really been great
either. they may have improved since the last time i used one. For
OCR, i think epson provide a program called textbridge which works with
jaws, but i'm not sure if they've continued to do this. As for the
printer its self, you may be limited as to what functions you can
control. The thing with modern printers is that most of them have
screens and everything is accessed by pressing buttons on the scanner
and scroling through menus. If only it was like photocopiers made by
canon or i think zerox also made one, these had a speech interface for
the blind. On HP printers, they have a control center and from there,
you can make coppies, scan documents and pictures, or print photos
that's if you have a HP printer. Epson have something similar called
smart pannel which i believe allows access to commonly used functions,
but again i'd hesitate to say how accessibility varies from model to
model as manufacturers often change their software without telling anyone.

My recommendation? one way of finding out if its accessible is simply
download it and install it before you buy the product. obviously it'll
go on at you about the product not being plugged in, but if you can,
skip past those warnings and see if you can run the epson smart pannel.
i think drivers and software are available separately from the epson
website by searching on google or the site for your model. You
shouldn't have any major problems, and if you can't get to something,
try the jaws curser.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any further questions.

Many thanks,

Mo.

I have an Epson Artisan 810 All-In-One Wireless Network printerr. I
absolutely love it. Typically software for HP printers is more accessible
and they officially support Linux drivers. However, I got tired of HP
printers getting chincy. A prime example is the last HP OfficeJet printer I
owned had a paper feed so cheap, even my sighted wife was unable to fax a
single page! The paper feed on my Artisan is robust and has not failed yet.
The ADF works great for scanning and faxing. It also has a full flatbed
scanner. The ink is really easy to change. Hardware wise, this printer can
not be beat!

The software is a mixed bag. I still have not figured out the Epson Scan
software. The fax software is straight forward and accessible. I generally
avoid their software beyond the basic drivers. Using this printer with
Windows for those who are completely blind is probably not recommended. I
have just enough vision to see the icon size soft buttons on the screen.
The main screen has 6 buttons and I know that Scan is the bottom middle
button. This scanner can scan to a memory card plugged into the scanner. I
just scan to the memory card and all of the computers in our house can
access the card over the network.

I use my scanner frequently from Vinux. A separate division of Epson in
Japan provide Linux drivers that work great. Ubuntu has a bunch of great
free, utilities to work with scanned images, and there is more to come.
