Re: [JAWS-Users] New member/Question
List is active. Virtual ribbons supposedly allow you to use Outlook and other Microsoft products with the old menu structure, however if turned on you can't use shortcut keys such as let's say control N for a new message, you must go through the menus to create a new message. Your mileage may vary, advise you to use the ribbons despite needing to remember three or more key combinations to do almost anything. Faster in my opinion. I tried virtual ribbons but after a week turned them off because I could not center a line, or do other tasks I had done in Word for years. I realise that this might be off topic but I would really like it if someone could give me sergestions instead of saying this is not a jaws related question and there for it wouldn't be answered because simply I don't know where else to go to get help with this question. Well with that out of the way lets begin! With out beating around the bush, its to do with a certain file extention. Basicly ones like .zip .exe and ones that are not music related are fine. By this lets say for example I wanted to download the latest demo of Jaws so I go to that website find the jaws version I want and when I hit enter on it a dialog box comes up asking weather I want to run, save or cancel. So I have a choice in what I want to do. Now comes my problem that I am having. Basicly if its a music extention such as .mp3 .wma and proably loads of more that I have not heard of. But if lets say I go to the website blind cool tech all of them are audio files that you can download. Well when ever I hit enter on one of them windows media player which is my default player to play things just comes up I don't get the dialog box asking weather I want to open, save or cancel. The only way at present I can download these types of files is going to the link hitting the apps key on it and going down to save target as then a save as dialog box comes up and I hit enter and that saves the file. But is there a way to get windows media player and its extentions to behave as for example as the .exe .zip extentions? I know this proably is a tough question to answer and to be fixed for me but please I would be greatful if someone could give me advice on how to resolve it. Many Thanks A new member. Re: [JAWS-Users] new member and have a question about saving an mp3 wmaextentions like that in internet explorer 8
Actually, the procedure that you are using is the one I also use. I don't know any other way when that happens. Sometimes rather than clicking on the link you can try first hitting the Context menu key and see what it presents. Sometimes it will present that menu that allows you to Save Target. It depends on how they have set up the page. Re: [JAWS-Users] New Member
Greetings, My name is Fred and I'm also a new member . I live in Hamilton Ohio which is about 27 miles north of Cincinnati. I have been a jaws user since September of 2007. When I started out I knew just about nothing about computers. I learned how to type using talking typing teacher, and I learned how to use jaws from a computer instructor from Clovernook Center For The Blind located in Cincinnati ohio. I started out with jaws 8.0,and then went on to jaws 9. I have a copy of jaws 10 but I have yet to install it, because I'm so comfortable with what I've got, and based on what I've been hearing from you guys on some of the problems you have been having. I think I made a pretty wise decision. I guess I'll wait alittle while and continue reading everyones email on the subject and then maybe i will install it when it is cool. Can you dig it? Anyway, I am still a rookie, and I get stuck on this and that all the time. Sometimes I'm up all night trying to figure this or that out. And sometimes it takes me days to figure out things. I am really glad to have finally found you guys to sometimes help me out and I hope I can be of help to one of you aalso. Well, guys and girls I just wanted to introduce myself. I open up a new blank document in word. then have to crate a chart by entering on insert, picture, chart. from the menus, so far ok... this chart is the bar chart that we start off with. they call it a basic chart. from what I've been told, you have two pains or windows open, one is the data sheet, the other is the chart. one is in front of the other. I can't appear to switch between the two windows, I need the focus to be on the data sheet to insert data on the the data sheet, but need the other window to manipulate the chart. I've tried every trick in the book I know to get jaws to read both windows. this is only one of about a million problems I've got. so, on the data sheet, you have items down the left hand side, then a row of items across the bottom. I can with hit and miss get jaws to read the items, but is is random. so on the graph before inserting everything, it will have... first quarter second quarter third quarter fourth quarter down the side of the chart. across the bottom is: north south east west. I'd paste in a chart here just not sure if jaws will read it, or not read it, in the same way it wont read it in word. if this makes any sense? now where I've got the quarters and the compass positions, we are supposed to overtype them with other details, then change axes positions, then insert titles, then change that basic graph to a pie chart. then the run really begins, as then I've got to shade in segments of the pie, etc. it does get very complicated and is really winding me up. this is why I need a digital copy, then I can just send items to the people who might be able to help. I'm getting so frustrated as I've managed to find other work around and also if I cant do these graphs I wont get my full certificate and I think that is just so unfair. if it was for work etc then sure I can create graphs with other means, but for this course I have to use word. I forgot to mention, I'm a fairly advanced user of jaws. thanks for any help. I am doing a course at college which entails me using Microsoft office. the version is 2003 we are using jaws 9. Part of my course work is to create graphs, charts and pie charts within word. I am really struggling to get jaws to read anything on a basic chart of any description, whether it be pie, flow or bar. if I'm lucky, jaws will read north, south, east and west on a bar chart if I use the jaws cursor, but I cannot get either pc nor jaws cursor to the position to enter text within the correct fields. does anyone know if there is a work around with jaws? I am trying to get a digital copy of the manual, that's proving almost impossible too. at least then I could show people what I need to do
Re: [JAWS-Users] New Member and a Request for help
hiya I thought the same thing, I've tried that, nothing happens. it's just as if jaws cant see the other window at all. I forgot to mention, at present, I have an assistant at college who clicks on whatever I cant click on, but, I'd rather do this myself. I mean, I'm not always going to have someone there to help me so really want to figure this out so I can create and manipulate graphs independently. I just can't believe there isn't a work around for this. I did think of emailing freedom scientific directly, just wasn't quite sure how to explain the problems I'm having. *smiles* thanks for your help. hiya the course I'm doing is similar to clate, I'm doing ECDL. I wish I could use excel as it's sounding like I'd have more luck, only the course dictates I use word. I've recently learned about changing a clip art picture in to a text object so that jaws can see it. I wondered if this would work for the graphs? the command is, ctrl alt C. Thanks for everyone's help, it is appreciated. *smiles* Elaine All outgoing messages are scanned by Avast - Original Message - From: Estelita [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Tuesday, December 02, 2008 5:25 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] New Member and a Request for help Hi Elaine, Using Insert command means you have a file somewhere to insert in the word doc that you have been created, eg picture, chart etc. The chart has to be done in Excel, which is very easy to do especially if you just doing basic chart. I have done Clait 1 and 2 plus, and as far as I know, we create charts using Excel and we can insert it in a word doc. To read the Title bar, press JAWS key-T. To read the Address bar, press JAWS key-A (this may not work in JAWS 10, a problem I reported to FS during beta testing). If you are unable to activate a link by pressing Enter, try pressing Shift-Enter. If your laptop does not have a numeric keypad, you may have to assign the Caps Lock key or some other key as your JAWS modifier key. - Original Message - From: Charline Smith [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Tuesday, December 02, 2008 6:36 AM Subject: [JAWS-Users] New member with a few questions about JAWS 10 Hello list members I just recently installed JFW 10 and I am having alot of trouble. Re: [JAWS-Users] New Member and a Request for help
Hi Elaine, Using Insert command means you have a file somewhere to insert in the word doc that you have been created, eg picture, chart etc. The chart has to be done in Excel, which is very easy to do especially if you just doing basic chart. I have done Clait 1 and 2 plus, and as far as I know, we create charts using Excel and we can insert it in a word doc. However: somebody in the list might know how to create chart in the word who can help you.
