Re: [JAWS-Users] [Bulk] Re: windows 10 redstone
Hi guys, when this anniversary update comes out will we have a choice to update? Will it be automatic like all the other updates up until now? If it's a must and automatic update and it doesn't work properly with jaws or nvda what are we as the blind community to do? -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Joseph Lee Sent: June 15, 2016 1:11 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [Bulk] Re: [JAWS-Users] windows 10 redstone Hi, Redstone (specifically, Redstone 1 (RS1)) is indeed the codename for Windows 10 Anniversary Update (also known as Version 1607). It includes an improved Narrator, Cortana improvements, Edge extensions among other things. As far as accessibility is concerned, it includes a bit more responsive UI Automation. See this post from Win10 group: https://win10.groups.io/g/win10/thread/anniversary_update_updates/1997384?p= ,,,20,0,0,0::RecentPostDate%2FSticky,,anniversary+update,20,2,0,1997384 An item of note is Edge and UAC (User Account Control) dialog changes: Microsoft has changed certain technical information about Edge that'll take a while for Freedom Scientific (now part of VFO) to implement, and UAC is now powered by the same platform that powers universal apps. JAWS compatibility: I recommend waiting until at least 18 beta comes out this fall. Although Insiders who uses JFW report it is working to some extent, crashes were observed with Anniversary update preview builds for some, and upcoming JFW 18 would have resolved them by now (unfortunately, toasts are not announced in Windows 10 despite the fact that help balloon notification is checked under verbosity settings for each level). As far as universal apps are concerned, it's a mixed bag of accessibility, and use of touch cursor is a must. //JL -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Shane Hecker Sent: Wednesday, June 15, 2016 9:39 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] windows 10 redstone I'm guessing that'll be the anniversary update that is supposed to come out in July. According to an article I read on the Microsoft site, the idea is to be able to update to Windows 10 without losing any functionality. It was not clear as to if the update would come through Windows Update, or as a download, but it is supposed to be an easy seamless update. Been there, done that to both suggestions, unfortunately. MS replaced my original Win7 disk when it became apparent that the original was defective- and becoming convinced that somehow that messed up registration somehow. Hoping they can fix since they broke :) Cher -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Michael Boyd Sent: Wednesday, June 10, 2015 9:37 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [Bulk] Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows 10 not showing up for me- how do I get it? Try clicking on Check for Updates in Windows Update and see if something doesn't appear where the Important and Optional updates usually are found. It will tell you to check the system tray for the icon, and it will now be there. click on the icon in the system tray and follow the prompts to register ofr the upgrade. I read that you can also go to www.windows.com/getwindows10.com, and register for the upgrade there. Hi Dave, If you upgrade to Windows 10 within 1 year from it becoming available, it is free, after that time period, it will have to be purchased. You should probably consult the Microsoft website for their pricing structure. Re: [JAWS-Users] [Bulk] Re: Windows 10
Good question, Dave. PCWorld stated months ago that Ms is going to treat this as a long-term platform--something that can be tweaked and sustained over a period of time, rather than something to be scrapped every couple of years--radical concept, eh? Buying and installing DOS was never a big deal--didn't cost much, required no sighted help. But a long-term Windows would be a real blessing, provided it was stable and well thought out. My reading of this is that it is not a subscription software model (like adobe use). It is a free upgrade to eligible users.
