This level of dictionary helps you find a word on the tip of the tongue or
confirms a word's commonly understood meaning. For anything more sophisticated,
you go to the OED, etc.

Yes, true, I think you will get etymology and such toothough the online
etymology dictionary is probably the best source for that. I'm happy though

Thanks for mentioning Dictionary Lookup. It had somehow passed me by. It's
a nice feature that gives a lot more than a definition, although the
definition will almost always be all I need.
Like you, I use the currency converter and none of the other Research It

Hahawell, yeah, the thing is that as neat a feature as an in-JAWS lookup
extension seems to be, it's probably more trouble than it's worth to mess
with it, for most people. Doesn't mean you shouldn't try. But when all you
want to do is order something from amazonwell, the website is right
there for everyone to use with Firefox or whatever. I personally love the
dictionary lookup as primary because I can just put my cursor on a word,
press insert-windows-r, and boom, there's the definition. That's great, and
saves me the trouble of having to install and use another piece of software.
The currency conversion is also pretty convenient. Everything else, well, I
can just use the browser like most other people do. I still think it's cool
that we have this feature and obviously everyone's different, and should use
it as they wish.

Introduction to Creating Rule Sets
for JAWS Research It Queries

Introduction

Research It is a query tool first introduced in JAWS 11 which makes it fast
and simple to look up information using a predefined set of lookup modules.
Thus, for example, one might wish quickly to look up the definition for a
word encountered while reading an article without taking the time and
trouble to visit an Internet website and search for the definition. Once
the information is found, the user can rapidly return to the primary task
with a single keystroke. This allows the user to find the needed
information with a minimum amount of time and distraction. JAWS Research It
can do this and other look up tasks, providing that a rule set has been
created which tells JAWS where and how to find the information requested.
At present JAWS ships with a number of predefined rule sets, but it is
inevitable that users will want the ability to use Research It to find data
that is not available using those predefined rule sets.

It is the purpose of this document to provide a basic introduction to
creating these rule sets so users with adequate programming background can
learn the basic strategy for creating their own queries. We will discuss
the two file types that comprise a rule set and describe what types of
information are required in each. We will then discuss how desired
information is found and extracted from a webpage, provide a very basic
introduction to the programming tools used to find and extract that
information, and give a couple of simple examples to illustrate these
techniques. However, it is beyond the scope of this article to provide a
comprehensive tutorial on how to program these queries. We will provide
references to manuals and function libraries that should allow anyone with
moderate to advanced programming knowledge to acquire the necessary tools.
Such individuals should have little difficulty in expanding the introductory
information presented here and learn how to create more complex queries.

query using this rule set will be aborted if it exceeds the timeout
specified. The default timeout is 15000 milliseconds and will be used if no

you type in 416 and choose this lookup, it will report back Toronto,
Ontario, Canada. Available for the United States and Canada only.

set up a query that can locate and report that data back to the user. In

I had thought there was a way to add your own lookup sources, though I
never
really looked into it. I could see how this could get pretty complicated.
It
would involve more than simply adding a uRL. So, this thread made me
curious

way
to do this. It's a nice JAWS feature, but not really designed to be

Hello there;

Actually, you cannot receive the MLB scores with jaws11 either.

Obviously the web site has changed,
This will yield the result of research-it not working.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws Research It

2011-06-25 Thread Lennie

Hi Denny,

Below I reposted my suggestion to obtain MLb scores until FS fixes
the problem. I just used it this morning with the date for Friday's
games and I got all the scores. I hope that this will do for you in
the meantime.

I too cannot get my beloved team scores on research it. I think that
I may have found a temporary solution until FS fixes the problem It
not as easy as research it, but it durable.

I did a Google search for NLB scores for 05/02/11 since I wanted the
information for that day. I found my information on USA Today and
what I was looking for was found in the summary link.

I then did ALT+D to get the address bar and change the URL date to
last night's game and I got the information for my team.

Caution: when you go into the summary link for your team, press the
letter R for the radio button to uncheck refresh the page every two
minutes and choose not to refresh.

Here is the URL:

http://content.usatoday.com/sportsdata/scores/mlb/2011/06/24

As I said, it is good enough for now and no telling how long FS will
give us another update for Jaws 12 which I am using the latest build.

I hope that this will work for all of you. Please let me know if this
does not work for you.

Go Nat!

Take care.

There is an even easier way to obtain all the major league baseball scores

FS would better serve its customers by eliminating the Research It feature
from future versions of JAWS. Constantly issuing fixes for Research It
every time a web page layout changes is counter-productive, and detracts
from the time FS's software development team can devote to more important
issues. To be perfectly blunt, Research It does not enhance the basic

Besides, all the information available through Research It can just as

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws Research It

2011-06-25 Thread Alan Robbins
Thanks, I remember that from last year. Since I don't use
JAWS 11 anymore I was simply passing on a report I read on
here from another user last week. Guess I should proof
things for myself before passing on. Sorry for any
inconvenience

hi alan:
jaws 11 does not work either.
this seems to happen every year when interleague play kicks
in.
by the time a hot fix is here interleague play will be over.
this, too, happens every year also.

 Denny,

Yes, this was identified last week. Reportedly JAWS 11 is
still ok, but JAWS 12 is not working. I'm assuming FS will
put out a hot fix near beginning of July (hopefully) that
will correct the issue. They've been pretty responsive to
 these type things

There is an even easier way to obtain all the major league
baseball scores
until Research It is fixed. Just call Tell Me at
800-555-TELL, say Sports
at the main menu, then baseball. It's toll-free and you
don't even need a

 Hi Denny,

Below I reposted my suggestion to obtain MLb scores until
FS fixes the
problem. I just used it this morning with the date for
Friday's games and
I got all the scores. I hope that this will do for you in
the meantime.

I too cannot get my beloved team scores on research it. I
think that I may
have found a temporary solution until FS fixes the problem
It not as easy
as research it, but it durable.

I did a Google search for NLB scores for 05/02/11 since I
wanted the
information for that day. I found my information on USA
Today and what I
was looking for was found in the summary link.

I then did ALT+D to get the address bar and change the URL
date to last
night's game and I got the information for my team.

Caution: when you go into the summary link for your team,
press the letter
R for the radio button to uncheck refresh the page every
two minutes and
 choose not to refresh.

 Here is the URL:

http://content.usatoday.com/sportsdata/scores/mlb/2011/06/24

As I said, it is good enough for now and no telling how
long FS will give
us another update for Jaws 12 which I am using the latest
build.

I hope that this will work for all of you. Please let me
know if this does
 not work for you.

 Go Nat!

 Take care.

 Lennie

2011-01-05 Thread Dale Leavens
Why not just add the link to your favorites list? Press ALT-A when on the
link then enter and it is saved. You can also set up folders within your
favorites to classify and/or organize your favorites to make it quicker and
easier to find them. You could have a folder called say Technology and put
the link in there. Internet Explorer will take you right to it each time.

I even have a shortcut to my Favorites, ALT+CTRL+F (for favorites in case I
can't remember)

Hope this helps and you can again begin using your computer on the Web
without waiting for your screen reader to be updated.
