Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS sma question
Hi. If you try to do this shortly before the next version of JAWS is released that you won't have a license for, the cost should be around $160. maybe they won't always have that sale but it seems to me they have done it for a couple years now. When you get the letter in the mail letting you know that this is the last version you can use on your SMA, that letter will probably mention the savings if you want to activate it right then. Also, you already know that you'll be good for 2018 and 2019 both before you have to spend that again right? I personally think the up front cost of purchase is high, but I feel the cost of the SMA especially in the sale price window is pretty reasonable, at least for the home use one. 80 dollars for a year is pretty doable for most folks. Ask VFO, but I believe the condition is that the SMA be bought within two years of the previous SMA or JAWS purchase. Having JAWS 18 implies this criterion is met. When you install JAWS 2018 you will be down to zero upgrades. If you never install a JAWS version above 17, you will always have two upgrades available. However you will not get any upgrades beyond JAWS 2018, because your SMA allows you two upgrades past your current version of JAWS 17. If you want to go beyond JAWS 2018, I recommend you install both JAWS 18 and JAWS 2018, and contact VFO to purchase a new pair of upgrades. You won't be able to go beyond JAWS 2018 if you don't purchase any new SMA. And I suspect that not purchasing new SMA later this year will mean you will pay big $$$ if/when you finally do upgrade past JAWS 2018. If this is as clear as mud, call VFO at 800-444-4443 in the U.S. or your local dealer. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS SMA Upgrades Inquiry
Look at the about box for JAWS 17 in your JAWS help Menu. If it states you have SMA 2 remaining, then just download and install JAWS 2018 and it will work now. Otherwise, choose "update authorization" in your help menu and let it update your authorization key install on the computer. It should then reflect SMA 2 remaining if that is what you have. If this is still not clear, the Tech Support people will be happy to assist you on this. IT CERTAINLY DOES. When you buy an SMA, you pay for the version you're buying plus THE NEXT TWO versions, IN ADVANCE OF your GETTING THEM WHEN PRODUCED BY FS FOR YOUR USE. (Whether you upgraded your version of JAWS on your computers or not, you've paid for the upgrade beforehand when you purchased an SMA.) There is no skipping of upgrades within the SMA. If people have second thoughts about SMA's, then you don't purchase them and you can then skip any upgrade you don't like. The deal is that you get a version a bit cheaper because you've purchased an SMA, and that version is the next consecutive version, one or two versions, depending on what stage you're at in the Agreement. -Original Message- From: Mike Sent: Sunday, November 22, 2015 12:37 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] november windows 10 update I have seen nothing saying that one has to upgrade everytime that a new version of Jaws is released. Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws SMA info
You do not take into account updates to Windows 10, or future enhancements of JAWS. Both could be minor or significant. For example, Windows 10 Edge is not really usable and why they released without accessibility in mind when it is supposedly the default browser makes no sense to me. However, in the future Microsoft may actually understand how to make accessibility work in every product they make and include it just as they include all the eye candy. Notice, I say May there. If say in a year they have actually found a way for screen readers to hook into Edge and by doing so they can offer us great accessibility, far better even that we have in IE 11, updating JAWS would be essential to those in the workforce for example. If you are going to play in technology, you need to stay at least moderately up-to-date. That said, I have not updated to Windows 10 because I am here alone with no eyes to help if I get in trouble and trust me, lately I find trouble easily. I will eventually get there but, I don't need to do that right now, so it will wait until either I have more confidence in my ability, eyes to assist, or I have no choice. It isn't happening today, probably not even before the New Year but eventually it will. I held onto Windows 98 for a couple of years after XP mainly because it was easy to fix if I had problems being able to reinstall or correct from the disks I had. I held off on Vista until I had to get a new computer. I deliberately bought a new computer about 3 months after Windows 7, but I have not touched 8, in fact, I gave away a Windows 8 computer days after my late husband passed. I bought a laptop for work last spring but, it had to have 7 on it. Right now it is totally messed up from the job I could not keep due to much inaccessible software I had been told would work, some in Silverlight, web forms that hung ... and they truly messed up the laptop. If I upgrade to 10 it will be the first one since I seldom use it, and, in fact, can only use it to a limited degree right now. One reason I don't use it is the keyboard, too flat, large trackpad in front and my arms are short. I have a cordless keyboard also but discovered that often it misinterpreted things. Anyway, I know one cannot stand still, technology moves on, I started with JAWS FOR WINDOWS Thanksgiving weekend in 1998 and I think it was version 2.0 or 3.0. The internet, JAWS itself, programs needed to communicate, work, even play have come a long way in the past 17 years, I can't imagine myself still using that first version of JAWS today. I am only recently retired, but, for me at least keeping my main screen reader up-to-date will remain a part of my toolbox for as long as I can use a computer. Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws SMA info
I think this is probably not so simple any more like it was for XP, 7, and 8. Even if 10 is to be the last version of Windows, it will be updated on a faster scale than ever before. This has the potential to break accessibility in a way that the current version of Jaws, or any screen reader, may not handle well if left forever on an old version. - Original Message - From: "Kevin" <klee...@gmail.com> To: <jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com> Sent: Wednesday, November 18, 2015 4:58 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws SMA info but if one chooses to just stick with jaws 16.0.4463 running windows 10 won't you be ok forever because microsoft will not be creating any OS higher than 10 and jaws 16.0.4463 works fine. I encourage you to also contact the Customer Service people and look at the best possible options for upgrading and getting an SMA at the same time. And of course, make sure you are on the Home Edition if you qualify. When your license has fallen behind 2 or more years, it can get very pricey to get caught up which is why the SMA program is so good. For Home Edition, it works out to about $60 per year. Anyway, please talk to Customer Service and make sure you know the best options. I just purchased mine. There is a discounted price of $120 until Dec 31. this is for 18 and 19. I had to call, there was a glitch somewhere. I entered my serial number and was informed that I am not registered. When I called it is registered. MY serial number is within the first 50 numbers issued. I believe 1995. I had jaws for dos a few years prior to jfw. Previously I had the talking computers from Dean Blazy, that is where I first met Ted Hinter. He was the programmer for Maryland computer Services. There is an interesting story on my web page about the first talking computer linked to an IBM main frame computer. -Original Message- From: anna vimini Sent: Wednesday, November 18, 2015 4:48 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] jaws SMA info, but if you have an upgrade to Jaws 16 or 17 should it not be stated in the about section of jaws? A toll-free call to Freedom Scientific could probably get the answer for you. The number is 800-444-4443. I usually renew my SMA by phone, giving them a credit-card number. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Kathy Pingstock Sent: Thursday, August 01, 2013 12:42 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] jaws-sma A question that I have, can I pay my jaws sma using my on line banking? Yes, I'm sure you can; they take debit and credit cards; and most on-line banking sites have a spot where you can fill in the recipient info with a memo field so the bank can generate a check to Freedom Scientific.
