Re: [JAWS-Users] problem with my book external hard drive

2009-02-05 Thread jo luland
Hi All, I want to say thanks to those of you who responded to my inquiry. My
son did manage to format the drive as you have all suggested, but now it's
coming up with system volume information and will not allow him to go into
the drive. He clicked on the system volume information to see what happens
and it tells him access is denied. I just don't understand what's happening!
When I installed my external drive, which is the same one, I just plugged it
in and was off and running. This list is so great that I'm sure someone will
be able to help. Again, thanks in advance for all your assistance.

Hi Jo,

Did the computer assign a letter to the external drive? For example, My
Book F. If it did do this, then the computer does recognise the drive.
When you open a new external drive, they are usually shipped from the
factory with software, like programs to auto backup files and stuff like
that.
I've actually copied those files off of the external drive and kept them in
a folder on my C drive so I could look at them later. Anyway I'm off
track... Ask him if the computer does see the external drive. If so, while
sitting on the My Book, hit the alt key and bring up the file menue, and
arrow down to Format. It will want to do a full erase on it. This can take
a couple hours to complete.
But once it's done, he will have a clean hard drive that's ready to use.
Hope this helped.

I just ran into the same problem this weekend. It happened after installing
jaws 9 thumb drive version onto the external hard drive and then trying to
boot up the computer with the drive inserted.
Is there anything in particular that you have recently put on your external
drive? Perhaps it's interfering with the start-up. I can't say much beyond
that, though as I didn't ever exactly figure out what happened with my

Re: [JAWS-Users] problem with my book external hard drive

2009-02-05 Thread Victor
Hi Jo,

It sounds as if you are in the drive.

System Volume Information is a hidden file that you don't see unless you
have show hidden files enabled in your folder options.

It is also the information that houses the computer's system recovery
information should you ever have to perform a system restore, found in the
start, programs, accessories, system tools, and finally, system restore.

Should you ever get to a point where you need to restore your computer and
it's setting to an earlier time before a problem happened, you would perform
a system restore, which would then retrieve the information from the system
volume information file to replace what is currently there.

This would not show up unless you were physically in the drive to begin
with.

If you'd like, When you see this file, press your backspace key, and I think
you'll find that you have landed in the My Computer window of your computer,
and that the drive is there.

Especially if this window comes up right after the format, which is what
will sometimes happen after a format.

Either way, your computer would not let you access this information, ever,
unless you were in safe mode, and even then, you would have a hard time
accessing it.

Another file of this type is a file/folder you can sometimes find on your
external drives with the name of Recycler. This folder will not actually
appear unless you delete something from this drive, at which point, it is
the folder that houses your recycle bin contents, at which point, you can
retrieve it from this folder instead of the recycle bin.

This folder, like System Volume Information doesn't appear unless you have
your folder options to display hidden files and folders.

If you want some other information on this, feel free to contact me off list
at:

victor.gouv...@rogers.com

Or, if you'd like, you can add me to your Skype contact list, if you have
Skype, with my Skype name of scorpio110570, and we can see what's going on
then.

If the drive shows up in my computer and is only
showing system volume info folder. That is
because there is nothing on the drive, but system

just how much space is on the drive. then you will know if drive is bad or not.

Good afternoon,

Just to clarify that response. Since Windows XP (I believe) Windows
has placed a System Volume Information folder in the root of any
drive. This folder is normally hidden and if I'm not mistaken
includes information about System Restore points.

Hi, I know many of you have purchased the Western Digital external hard
drive because I remember a conversation regarding this topic. I've had one
for several years and have been using it with no problems. I gave one to my
son for Christmas and he just can't seem to get the computer to recognize
the device. Every time he enters on the drive, he is presented with a list
of I guess they are programs such as: autorun.bat. Does anyone have any
suggestions so I can help him? He is not a member of this list, but I think
he'll probably join before long. Thanks in advance for any help.

I can't say much beyond
that, though as I didn't ever exactly figure out what happened with my
problem either.

Re: [JAWS-Users] problem with my book external hard drive

2009-02-03 Thread Victor
Hi Joe,

Just to add to what Jack is saying, I've noticed that some external drives
are formatted incorrectly as FAT32, when they should be formatted as NTFS.

When your friend formats the drive, make sure he specifies NTFS and not
FAT32, otherwise he may find the drive crashing at some point.

Oh, and for the first time you format it, I would do a complete format, not
a quick format, as that will only erase what is on the drive.

True, it will take you longer to accomplish the format, but it's always
safer to be thorough, than not being thorough enough.

Re: [JAWS-Users] problem with my book external hard drive

2009-02-03 Thread Jack

Jack
