2009-12-08 Thread nickboldt
JBoss Tools 3.1.0.M4 does not include a version of XulRunner for 64-bit Mac.

However, the latest nightly builds from trunk DO contain a Cocoa XulRunner...
but only for 32-bit.

http://download.jboss.org/jbosstools/updates/nightly/trunk/

Or for offline install, try this update site zip:

http://download.jboss.org/jbosstools/builds/nightly/trunk/latestBuild.html

If you want to use the above, you'll need a 32-bit JVM. AFAIK there should be
an Apple Java 5.0 32-bit for Snow Leopard (64-bit Cocoa) out there somewhere.

If you find it, please post a link to it here (with a statement of your success
using JBT w/ 32-bit Cocoa XulRunner).

Thanks!

If you can use Carbon, then there's a XulRunner Carbon 32-bit (for OSX 10.4+)
available in M4, and the forthcoming RC1 (should be this week).

If you need Cocoa (32-bit only), then yes, you'll need the latest JBT 3.1
nightly.

In either case, you need to match Eclipse 32 with Java 32, or it won't run.

(You could also use something to virtualize Windows or Linux on your Mac and
then run the win32 or linux.gtk (x86 or x86_64) versions... but I digress. :)

If on windows (or you don't like symlinks), remove the project from your

Just FYI, you don't have to add, select, install, restart, add, select,
install, restart, add, select, install, restart to get JBT installed. Add the
three update sites (in steps 6, 8, 10), pick the stuff you want from JBT (step
10), and let p2 resolve all the dependencies.

Then the process becomes much simpler: add, add, add, select, install, restart

2009-11-12 Thread nickboldt
JBDS is by nature more stable than JBoss Tools, which incubates new code and
projects until they can be released into JBDS. (Think Fedora vs. RHEL.)

1) you can't safely upgrade from JBDS 2.1 to JBoss Tools 3.1 because they
depend on different versions of Eclipse (3.4.2 vs. 3.5.x). You can, however,
reuse an existing workspace and all your existing projects - but you need a
fresh Eclipse + JBoss Tools install.

If you want to live on the edge, you can use Eclipse 3.5.1 with JBoss Tools
3.1.0.M4 (or even a newer nightly build if you want the truly bleeding edge).

http://download.jboss.org/jbosstools/updates/development/
http://download.jboss.org/jbosstools/updates/nightly/trunk/

2) JBDS 3.0 will support Maven2 through the m2eclipse project; that work is
already under way in JBoss Tools 3.1.0.M4.

3) Much of this is coming soon, but I can't say specifically what or when just
yet. Others may have a better idea.

In addition to setting svn:ignore on bin and *.class, you probably don't want
to share your .settings folder/files either.

The only useful .dotfiles are .classpath and .project, IIRC. The rest are
metadata specific to your workspace that don't need to be in SVN, unless you
NEED to share that because w/o it the project won't compile. (In that case you
could set values in build.properties, MANIFEST.MF, or .classpath to accomplish
the same thing, I believe.)

Yes, that's correct. Sorry, should have mentioned that the Drools runtime is
NOT an update site, nor is it a collection of Eclipse plugins/features -- it's
the layer BELOW that.

So, yes, to install it you just unpack it somewhere and then configure the
Drools IDE plugins installed into Eclipse (from their update site / zip) to
tell it where you put the runtime.

It's akin to telling Eclipse where your Java runtime (JDK or JRE) is installed,
if you have more than one (1.4, 5.0, 6.0).

So, as you surmised, the process in general for Eclipse install/config is:

0. install Java
1. get Eclipse, unpack
2. run Eclipse, install into it using Update (remote sites, local sites, local
site zips)
3. get additional runtime(s) and unpack them outside Eclipse install folder
4. configure Eclipse to know where runtime(s) are located

Should you want to do the above for Seam, Hibernate, etc. that's the process. :)

To run Eclipse 3.5 w/ plugins which will speak to a Drools runtime you need
this:

a) Eclipse 3.5 (Galileo) [1]
b) JBoss Tools 3.1 M2 update site (or zip), which includes Drools IDE plugins
[2]
c) Drools 5.1 Beta runtime [3]

Note: if you're installing JBT from update site zip, see

If you can't access the unpacked update site, just download the zip from a

Within Eclipse / JBDS, do: Help About Features

Then compare those versions with what's on the various update sites.

https://www.jboss.org/tools/download/

Or, use these rules:

JBDS 2.0.0 ~= JBT 3.0.0
JBDS 2.1.0 ~= JBT 3.0.x + extra runtime support
JBDS 3.0.0 ~= JBT 3.1.0

If you're running Eclipse 3.5, you shouldn't see references to
http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/updates/3.4.

If you are and you do, you can disable that site so it won't fetch from it.

Same story for the really old GEF site,
http://download.eclipse.org/tools/gef/update-site/releases/site.xml

To install JBT 3.1, you only need the Galileo site and the JBT site:

2009-06-10 Thread nickboldt
When you fire up Eclipse, which Java runtime is it using? Check
/Applications/.../eclipse.ini - is there a -vm section which points to a
specific Java version?

If not, then start Eclipse and go into Help About configuration to see what
JVM is being used to run Eclipse. If you want to force Eclipse to start w/ 6
instead of 5 (or vice versa) edit your eclipse.ini file:

http://wiki.eclipse.org/IRC_FAQ#How_do_I_start_Eclipse.3F

When you start JBoss AS 5.0.1, are you starting it from within Eclipse? If so,
open the Debug view and right-click the thread, then select Properties. What
JVM is being used there?

I'm *guessing* there's a mismatch somewhere here, but I could be chasing my
tail here. :) You might have to clean out old .class files from your project(s)
and recompile w/ a 5.0 JVM?

First off, the wiki doc has been replaced by
http://www.jboss.org/tools/download/installation.

Secondly, which JVM are you using? 1.4.2? 5.0? 6.0? Which vendor?

Thirdly, given there are numerous ways to install JBoss Tools, and at least 4
versions you could have installed, can you specify which version you installed,
and from what update site or zip?

Thanks!

Can't help you with the above issue (though I'm sure someone else in here can).
I have one minor nitpick / piece of advice re: etiquette, however.

Saying your problem is urgent is redundant - all our issues are urgent, or we
wouldn't bother to ask for help. :) The reason I mention this is that getting
in the habit of trying to level up your issues above others can have the
opposite effect. I've seen some forums (not this one, though!) where people are
completely ignored if they claim their problems are urgent. Instead of coming
across as desperate, you come across as whiny - it's kind of like using your
ALL CAPS voice. Anyway, take that $0.02 as you will.

Incidentally, are the .rar files *actual* rar files or just jars with a .rar
extension? http://filext.com/file-extension/rar

Glad to hear your issue is resolved. In general, using an update site is better
than using Dropins because p2 will guarantee you get all the requirements.

(That said, sometimes the network dies and you have to shut down Eclipse and
try the install again to pick up the requirements from a different (non-broken)

The stuff in /trunk/ is newer, and will be included in JBoss Tools 3.1,
compatible with Eclipse 3.5. Compare:

Try using WinZip, WinRar, or some other unzip tool, and target c:\eclipse

This is a limitation of Windows and how it stores/reads files.

[jboss-user] [JBoss Tools (users)] - Re: HOW TO SOLVE JBOSS TOOLS ECLIPSE ERROR

2009-03-31 Thread nickboldt
Couple problems spring to mind immediately:

a) There's a 2.1.2 available, you should use that instead if you're using
Eclipse 3.3.2 (Europa).

b) If you're on 3.4.2 (Ganymede), then you should be using JBoss Tools 3.0.0;
2.1.2 won't run on 3.4.2.

http://www.jboss.org/tools/download/

Note also that the dropins dir is only supported in Eclipse 3.4.2 and beyond,
so if you're using that dir for Eclipse 3.3.2, it won't work. Unpack into
eclipse root folder instead.

http://wiki.eclipse.org/Equinox_p2_Getting_Started#Dropins

Because of the way that p2 works when discovering/installing plugins, you're
actually better off to use the Update feature in Eclipse to install JBoss Tools
than to download the zip(s) and unpack them into dropins. You'll get better
performance from Eclipse on startup too.

unzip -l $j | grep ServiceLocatorException; done

I'm guessing you may have lost the Seam nature in your project.

Try creating a new Seam project, then switch to the Navigator view and copy the
relevant Natures and Builders from that new .project file into the .project

Note that you can't just update JBoss Tools 2.1.1 to 3.0.0; you need a clean
Eclipse 3.4.2.

JBoss Tools 2 won't run on Eclipse 3.4, and JBoss 3 won't run on Eclipse 3.3.

I agree - and if you come from the Linux world then yes, update == replace with
newer.

Eclipse, however, comes from the Windows world, where installing a new service
pack or security fix means ADDING more code but not replacing it. So, yes, over
time your Eclipse install will get bigger and bigger unless you do and
uninstall to remove old version(s), then install something newer.

The only garbage collection that exists in the p2 installer AFAIK is that if
you ask to remove plugin A which depends on plugin B, and nothing else needs B,
it'll remove B too. But if you install A version 2.0.1 to update A version
2.0.0, you'll get both.

Stupid, I know, but there's nothing we can do about it. Hopefully the story has
improved in Eclipse 3.5, due out in June.

Now that the Ganymede SR2 updates have been published, you should be able to
install from either of these sites w/o needing to add anything else to
Eclipse's list of update sites:

http://download.jboss.org/jbosstools/updates/JBossTools-3.0.0.CR2/
http://download.jboss.org/jbosstools/updates/development/

I just tried it and it works fine. I started from the Eclipse Ganymede SR2 JEE
Bundle (which includes Eclipse 3.4.2 and Web Tools 3.0.4), but you can use
something smaller if you prefer (eg., as small as the Eclipse 3.4.2 Platform
Runtime Binary).

http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/packages/release/ganymede/sr2

Eclipse's Install Manager should be able to find all the requirements needed
for JBoss Tools 3 from the Ganymede SR2 update site.

If a view is not shown, not minimized, and otherwise not part of what Eclipse
is running, it shouldn't be loaded at all, as Eclipse lazy-loads classes only
when they're actually referenced.

-vm should point to java.exe or javaw.exe, not \bin. your Eclipse is running
with your system's default VM, which may (coincidentally) be the one you think
you've specified.

You can check what Eclipse is actually using in Help About Configuration,
or explicitly set -vm c:\path\to\java.exe to force a specific one.

As to the No more handles SWT problem, I've only ever seen - and solved -
that on Linux, which involved this:

# fix for org.eclipse.swt.SWTError: No more handles [gtk_init_check() failed]
  | # fix for Failed to invoke suite():org.eclipse.swt.SWTError: No more
handles [gtk_init_check() failed]
  | ulimit -c unlimited; # set corefile size to unlimited
  | export JAVA_HIGH_ZIPFDS=500
  | export LANG=C.

Here's what Google has to say:

2009-01-18 Thread nickboldt
I also use Fedora 10.

Using Eclipse Ganymede JEE Bundle (SR1) [0], and adding the JBoss Tools
3.0.0.CR2 Nightly Update Site [1] as documented here [2], I was able to
successfully install everything on the site, dependencies and all.

[2] http://www.jboss.org/community/docs/DOC-10044

Here's how I start Eclipse:
./eclipse/eclipse -clean -showLocation -data $workspace -consolelog -console
-vmargs -Xms128M -Xmx256M -XX:PermSize=128M -XX:MaxPermSize=256M 21 | tee
eclipse.log.`date`.txt

You could also install the Fedora Eclipse package using yum or PackageKit, then
install JBoss Tools into that (make sure the Ganymede and BIRT update sites are
enabled). See [2] above.

Here's the default Java that Eclipse uses (when not explicitly set with the
-vm /path/to/bin/java:

$ java -version
java version 1.6.0_0
IcedTea6 1.4 (fedora-7.b12.fc10-i386) Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_0-b12)
OpenJDK Server VM (build 10.0-b19, mixed mode)

HTH,

Nick

[jboss-user] [JBoss Tools (users)] - Re: Error installing JBOSS tools in Eclipse

2009-01-05 Thread nickboldt
Confirmed. In Eclipse 3.3, Update Manager will only search update sites which
are listed AND EXPANDED. This is a known issue.

Solution, if using Eclipse 3.3 -- expand all sites you will need to search (in
particular the Europa Web Tools sites).

Alternate solution: use Eclipse 3.4.1, where this bug no longer exists, then
grab JBoss Tools 3.0.0.CR1.

By the way, if you're not ready to step up to Eclipse 3.4.1, there's an Eclipse
3.3.2 you might want to use instead of 3.3.1, which includes numerous bug fixes.

Both the nightly [1] and stable [2] sites linked are for Eclipse 3.4 / JBoss
Tools 3.0.0.x.

Some other things to check:

a) you're using Open JDK 6.0, or Sun JDK, IBM JDK, or BEA JRockit version 5.0
or 6.0
b) you're using matching JVM and Eclipse version (32-bit or 64-bit)
c) you're using a compatible stack of projects under JBoss Tools 3.0 (Web Tools
3, EMF 2.4, XSD 2.4, Eclipse 3.4, BIRT 2.3 (only required for JBoss BIRT
feature))

You're using Sun 6.0, actually.

java.specification.vendor=Sun Microsystems Inc.
java.specification.version=1.6
java.version=1.6.0_10

If you want to force Eclipse to use 5.0, use the -vm /path/to/java.exe (or to
javaw.exe).

I think you might have to reinstall WTP. I don't see any Web Tools 3.0 plugins
in the list. You can get them from the Ganymede update site.

For JBoss Tools 2.x, you need Eclipse 3.3, WTP 2.0, EMF 2.3, GEF 3.3, DTP 1.5
[0].

I suggest downloading the Eclipse Europa Winter Maintenance (3.3.2) Java EE
bundle [1], then installing JBoss Tools [2] into it and adding any missing
dependencies from the Europa Update site [3].
