Why not use the latest release of 2.6 series -2.6.8 instead? It has some bug fixes found in the version you are using. Even better will be to used JBoss Portal 2.7.2 which gives you JSR-286 functionality as well in case you need it in future. Just for starters, you may want to check your version of Facelets and try the latest... I think it's 1.1.15b? It sounds like a possible selectList or Collection/Array problem. Look at the ui:repeat or c:forEach stuff and try different things.
