There is a unit test which does this exact lookup:

ex);
  |         }
  | 
  |         // Get the UserTransaction
  |         UserTransaction ut;
  |         try {
  |             ut = (UserTransaction)ctx.lookup("java:comp/UserTransaction");
  |         } catch (NamingException ex) {
  |             throw new ServletException("Unable to lookup UserTransaction", 
ex);
  |         }
  | 
  |
