Finally got it to work. Had to include servlet.jar in the /WEB-INF/lib directory and also add it to the class path ( I am guessing what the IDE calls the build path). Finally got it to work. Hate to sort of answer my own question (somewhat), after going thru the Fibonacci example, I deployed the .ear file and was able to debug ( also change the Java code) at runtime. Now if only I can get a basic struts project working, I am on my way.
